Scunthorpe Telegraph published Sports group leader handed grant to replace equipment destroyed...

A community leader who had to stop running outdoor sports events after his equipment was destroyed in an arson attack has been handed a grant to re-start them.

Conrad Broughton will receive four battery-operated floodlights, worth a total of ?2,500, from North Lincolnshire Council.

  1. Victim: Mr Broughton with his fire damaged car and sports equipment

And the floodlights, which are vital for him to run outdoor sports sessions such as football, cricket and rounders, will now allow him to start up again.

He runs the Ashby Community Sports Club, which is an initiative that aims to get youngsters off the streets.

Mr Broughton has been running active clubs in Ashby for three years and works with 200-400 children a week.

As previously reported, he had ?8,000 worth of uninsured sports equipment and his seven-seater Volkswagen Sharon car destroyed in the attack in November 2011.

No-one has been arrested so far in connection with the incident.

But the 48-year-old, of Cornwall Road, Ashby, believes the community lost out because of what happened in the attack.

He said: ?I am very pleased that the council has done this and it means I will be able to run the outdoor sports again.

?I don?t give up and I will fight until I am back again.?

The community leader had been trying to raise the money to buy the floodlights and had received various donations towards his cause - but he was falling short of the ?2,500 needed until the council came forward.

Scunthorpe and District Athletic Club donated ?75, and the Winterton Iron supporters? club donated ?50, while ?46 was raised by volunteers at the Ashby Community Sports Club.

An anonymous donation of ?100 was also made at Ashby Police Station a week after the attack took place, bringing the total to ?270.

This money will now be put towards a portable Rock-It Ball court ? to replace two that were destroyed in the fire.

Mr Broughton said: ?The council has agreed to buy me the four floodlights and they have already ordered them.

?I estimate it will cost them ?1,600, as they get a discount.

?They had paid for the original floodlights that were destroyed in the fire.?

Following the arson, he had only been able to run indoor Rock-It-Ball sessions, as the outdoor Rock-It-Ball, football, cricket and rounders sessions required floodlights.

As well as being a multi-sports coach, he also works as a casual duty manager at Quibell Park, Scunthorpe.

Anyone with information about the fire should contact Humberside Police on 101, quoting reference number 1870863.Or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
