Course Description:
This seminar will provide an introduction to the comparative study of constitutional law through the lens of Israeli constitutional jurisprudence ??? a jurisprudence that is built explicitly on the foundations of a variety of other constitutional systems, and which reflects the diversity of approaches to constitutionalism.
Through this comparative framework, students will learn basic constitutional theory and explore major constitutional debates in Israeli contemporary law.
Among the constitutional debates that the class will explore are topics such as freedom of expression and freedom of association, equality, the right of human dignity, due process, social rights and freedom of religion.

Externships are available in various career fields in San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, New York, Washington, DC and other locations (including international)!
Externship Timeline:
*November 13 and November 26: Applications accepted from ALL students priority will be given to Freshmen and Sophomores, but all students will be considered
*November 26:? Applications due at 5pm no extensions!
*Early December 2012: Externs selected and notified
*January 7-18, 2013: Externship Period (anywhere from 1 day to 14 days)

HSF provides a renewable award of up to $15,000 per yearfor current and prospective graduate students committed to the principles of liberty. The financial support enables students to focus on research instead of student teaching and side jobs. In addition, fellows receive:

Award and Eligibility Details
Humane Studies Fellowships are awarded to full-time graduate students and outstanding undergraduates with an interest in liberty and a demonstrated interest in pursuing a scholarly career. The fellowships support study in a variety of fields, including economics, philosophy, law, political science, history, and sociology. Students in any field are eligible to apply. Awards range from $2,000 to $15,000 and fellowship winners may re-apply for each year of their studies. In 2012, IHS awarded more than $800,000 to over 200 students. INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY AT THE SUPREME COURT OF THE UNITED STATES
POSITION: ?Internship in Justice Sotomayor?s Chambers at the Supreme Court of the United States
APPLICATION DEADLINE:??November 23, 2012? THIS FRIDAY!!!
DESCRIPTION:??Selected candidates will have an opportunity to work as an intern in the Chambers of the Honorable Sonia Sotomayor, Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, with a possibility of being hired as the Justice?s Aide to Chambers for the following Term of the Court.? It is a 3-month internship during either January-March or April-June of 2013 that will involve working directly with the Justice and with her staff.? Moreover, although it would be unpaid?we are willing to work with the student to get him/her credit for the internship if their university offers this kind of program/possibility.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- A recent college graduate or college senior is preferred
- Legal training is not required
- Fluency in speaking, writing, and transcribing Spanish is required (native speaker or advanced language skill) is required
- Excellent organizational skills and the ability to handle multiple assignments under pressure in an efficient and timely manner
- Excellent keyboarding skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office programs
- Impeccable judgment and professionalism
- Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with others at all levels of the Court
- Ability to deal with the public effectively
- Must be assertive, self-motivated, and detail-oriented
- Must work well with others and have excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Aspirations to attend law school and/or a commitment to public service are preferred
- Assisting Justice Sotomayor and Justice Sotomayor?s Conference Secretary, Scheduler/Personal Assistant, Law Clerks, and Chambers? Aide, as needed
- Assisting with basic secretarial duties, including filing, photocopying, answering the phone, and taking messages
- Typing and editing correspondence
- Filing and cataloguing petitions and memos
- Escorting the Justice?s guests around the Court and Chambers, including national and international high level officials
- Distribution of correspondence between Chambers and Court offices
- Preparation of lunch and snacks for the Justice
- Run errands outside of the Courthouse (a driver?s license is a must)
