(AP) ? Ernie Els knows what Royal Melbourne can do to a golfer, probably more than anyone.

Els was a member of the International team that won the Presidents Cup at Royal Melbourne in 1998 and had three straight wins on the Alister Mackenzie-designed course at the Heineken Classic.

His last came in 2004, when he missed a chance at a magical 59 by one stroke in the opening round and nearly squandered an eight-shot lead in the final round before eking out a win over Adam Scott.

Els says he'll "take it personally" if the United States, led by captain's pick Tiger Woods, win the Presidents Cup again when play begins Thursday.

"I've had some great tournaments here in the past, a great win in '98 for our team," Els said Tuesday. "It's always nice having some experience winning on it."

Els also finished second in the Heineken in 2005, the last tournament that was held at Royal Melbourne, which also coincided with Els' last visit to play Down Under. The memories from the course, and particularly from 1998, are still vivid.

"We jelled very well as a team," Els said. "I remember watching us play on the 18th hole, seeing some really big shots pulled off by the team, some amazing chip-ins. That was a really a great factor, we got the crowd behind us, and we rode that wave."

Els is mystified ? actually he referred to it as "crazy," that the Internationals haven't won since.

"I've been playing (on Presidents Cup teams) ever since 1996, and obviously lost quite a few times," Els said. "We had one tie (in South Africa in 2003), so it's hard to take. We don't really want to keep losing this thing."

There are five Australians on the International team ? Scott, Geoff Ogilvy, Jason Day and Greg Norman's captain's picks Robert Allenby and Aaron Baddeley ? three South Koreans, three South Africans, including Els, and Japanese 20-year-old Ryo Ishikawa.

"I love this team," Els said. "The Aussie boys are ready, a lot of them are playing really good golf."

Add to that Els' countryman and this year's Masters winner Charl Schwartzel.

"He's got the perfect ball flight for these greens," Els said. "So he's ready to go."

Asked about pairings, Els suggested it didn't matter who played with who on the Internationals.

"We're professional golfers and we know that we need to win points, no matter who you play with," Els said. "We can't keep huffing on about it."

Thursday's play has six foursomes (alternate shot) matches, followed by six fourball (better-ball) matches on Friday; five foursomes and five fourballs on Saturday and 12 singles matches on Sunday.

That's 34 matches, with 17 1/2 points ensuring a win for either team.

Woods and Steve Stricker, unbeatable in the last Presidents Cup, might not be playing together for every match as the Americans try to win for the seventh time in nine tournaments.

Woods said Tuesday he liked what he saw in the practice round from Stricker, who has not competed since Sept. 25 at the Tour Championship because of a neck injury affecting the strength in his left arm.

"Hopefully, we'll get put out there together," Woods said. "I know that we feel very comfortable with one another and we were talking about it today. There's a certain comfort level about each other's games."

He added, however, that the pairings for the week have not been decided.

"A lot of pairings have not been set in stone," Woods said. Ultimately, it's up to U.S. captain Fred Couples.

Woods has had 17 partners in the Presidents Cup and Ryder Cup over the years, but he has played only with Stricker the last two cups. They have lost only one match, last year at Wales.

Stricker, meanwhile, could easily partner someone like Hunter Mahan. If that's the case, it likely would be in foursomes, which could still leave intact the formidable Woods-Stricker tandem for fourballs.

It was Ogilvy who said two years ago about that partnership, "You've gone guy who hits every fairway and makes every putt, and his partner is Tiger Woods."

Woods only faced two questions about possibly playing Adam Scott, giving him a reunion with caddie Steve Williams two weeks after his racial comment while being roasted at a caddies award dinner.

"It's already done," Woods said about the ongoing saga. "I addressed it last week and I said life goes forward, not backward."

And there was only one mention of Woods being a captain's pick despite not having won in two years.

"Fred could have picked anybody, and I'm thankful that he had faith in me to be a part of the team," Woods said. "A lot of the players wanted me on the team, as well. So that part definitely did feel good."

Regulators probing gear shift trouble with GM cars

(AP) ? Federal safety regulators are investigating problems with the automatic shift levers on several General Motors Co. cars that have caused at least seven crashes.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said on its website Monday that the probe began with complaints about the Saturn Aura midsize car from the 2007 and 2008 model years, affecting nearly 89,000 vehicles.

But the agency said it is now checking to see if the problems extend to other GM vehicles. The Chevrolet Malibu from the 2004 to 2008 model years and the Pontiac G6 from the 2005 to 2008 model years have similar shifting systems, the agency said in documents filed on its website.

NHTSA said the protective jacket around cables connecting the floor shift lever to the transmission can deteriorate, exposing the cables to the elements. Cables can corrode and weaken, and the shift lever position may not match the car's gear. That means a driver could put the car in park but the transmission could be in drive or reverse. In some cases, the car may not shift at all.

The agency said it received three reports of crashes caused by the problem, while GM received four, with one person hurt. In that crash, the driver put the gearshift in park, got out of the car, and was hit when the car unexpectedly rolled backward, NHTSA said in documents filed on its website. No details were given on whether the driver was seriously hurt.

In another case, a driver put the car in park, but the transmission stayed in reverse. "When the driver exited with the engine running, the vehicle continued (accelerated) in reverse and struck a building," NHTSA said.

GM told the agency that the problem affects mainly models with four-speed transmissions, but not six-speed transmissions.

Company spokesman Alan Adler said only that GM is cooperating in the investigation.

NHTSA said it has upgraded the investigation to an analysis that will check how many times the cables have failed, the consequences "and the scope of vehicles that may be affected, including the models, model years and transmission types."

An investigation doesn't necessarily mean that the vehicles will be recalled.

GM sold more than 815,000 Chevy Malibus in calendar years 2004 through 2008 and over 570,000 Pontiac G6 models from 2005 through 2008, according to Autodata Corp. and Ward's AutoInfoBank. It's unlikely that all of those cars will be covered by the investigation because they have several types of transmissions.

In March of 2009, GM recalled about 277,000 vehicles for a similar shift lever problem.

At that time the recall involved 2009 model year versions of the Buick Enclave; Chevrolet Cobalt, HHR, Malibu and Traverse; GMC Acadia; Pontiac G5 and G6; and the Saturn Aura and Outlook. Only 75,000 of the vehicles had been sold, with the rest still at dealerships.

NASA budget: Telescope saved, space taxis cut

A compromise spending plan for NASA preserves the over-budget replacement for the Hubble Space Telescope and halves President Barack Obama's request for money to spur development of commercial space taxis, officials said Tuesday.

Overall, the U.S. space agency would receive $17.8 billion for the fiscal year that began Oct. 1 ? $924 million less than the White House requested and $684 million less than it received this year.

    4. Great Bear in sky heads into hibernation

The compromise, approved by a House and Senate conference committee, is part of a "minibus" appropriations bill that also includes the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the Federal Aviation Administration's Office of Commercial Space Transportation. The full House is expected to consider the bill on Wednesday.

The spending plan, which was posted on a congressional website on Tuesday, authorizes $3.8 billion for human space exploration programs, including $1.9 billion for a proposed heavy-lift rocket and $1.2 billion for a deep space capsule to fly astronauts to the moon, asteroids and other destinations in the inner solar system, as a follow-on program to the International Space Station.

A House bid to cancel NASA's over-budget James Webb Space Telescope, a successor to the Hubble Space Telescope, was scuttled, though the compromise bill caps spending on the program at $8 billion.

Overall, NASA's science programs would receive $5.1 billion, about $155 million more than its 2011 budget. About $530 million of that amount would go toward the Webb Space Telescope.

NASA has said it would delay other science programs to keep the telescope on track for launch in 2018.

The bill cuts Obama's request for $850 million to speed up development of commercial passenger spaceships to $406 million.

"We're always appreciative of whatever dollars the appropriators appropriate to us," Kathy Nado, a manager at NASA Headquarters, said at the American Astronautical Society meeting in Austin, Texas. "Whatever dollars they give us we will be able to effectively spend."

The agency is currently funding space taxi development work at Boeing and three privately held companies ? SpaceX, Sierra Nevada Corp. and Blue Origin. It had hoped for enough money to keep at least two and possibly three teams working on spaceships that could ferry astronauts to the space station.

Since the space shuttle program ended this summer, the United States has been dependent on Russia to fly crews to the station, at a cost of more than $50 million per person. NASA had hoped for a U.S. alternative by 2016.

Nado declined to say how the shortfall would affect NASA's spending on space taxis. But NASA's deputy administrator, Lori Garver, said that if the space agency did not get the full $850 million it was asking for, the 2016 schedule would be "at risk."

The bill also adds $470 million to NASA's budget to cover costs of terminating a pension fund for workers who were employed by prime shuttle contractor United Space Alliance, a joint venture of Boeing and Lockheed Martin Corp.

Cardinals choose Matheny as La Russa's successor (AP)

ST. LOUIS ? The St. Louis Cardinals are replacing a manager who's third on the career victory list with a man who'll be writing his first lineup card on opening day.

Mike Matheny, a former catcher with the Cardinals who had been a minor league instructor, will be introduced as Tony La Russa's successor at a news conference Monday.

"I think he's going to be a great leader," Jim Edmonds, a teammate of Matheny's with the Cardinals, said Sunday night in a telephone interview with The Associated Press. "If he goes out there and does what he's capable of doing and they put the players around him, he could be the manager for the next 20 years."

The 41-year-old Matheny played for the Cardinals from 2000-04, won three of his four Gold Gloves and was part of three postseason efforts including a World Series. He became a team leader playing for La Russa, who retired just days after leading the team to his second World Series title in 16 seasons.

Matheny's playing career blossomed after he signed a one-year free-agent deal to be the backup catcher in St. Louis. Though a career .239 hitter, Matheny did enough defensively to earn a starting job.

Matheny was one of six men the Cardinals interviewed to replace La Russa.

They also talked to Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg, longtime Cardinals third-base coach Jose Oquendo, former Boston manager Terry Francona, Triple-A manager Chris Maloney, and Chicago White Sox coach Joe McEwing.

General manager John Mozeliak declined to comment on the hire aside from a one-word text to The Associated Press: "Tomorrow." La Russa did not respond to telephone and text messages.

Francona was the only candidate who had major league managing experience. He left the Red Sox after the team collapsed in September.

Oquendo coached for La Russa the last dozen years after playing the final decade of his career with the Cardinals and has had a handful of interviews for managing openings.

The Cardinals received permission to interview Sandberg, manager of the Phillies' Triple-A team.

Former Cardinals outfielder Chris Duncan, who played for La Russa and is on local sports talk radio, thought the Cardinals would go with Francona because it gave them the best chance to retain momentum from their unlikely World Series run. The Cardinals won the NL wild card on the final day of the season and were underdogs against the Phillies, Brewers and Rangers, but have a solid returning cast with or without free agent Albert Pujols in the fold.

"I think Matheny will be a great manager, given time," Duncan said. "He lacks managing experience, but it shows a lot about his character that the Cardinals hired him."

Matheny was with the Giants when his career was ended by concussions in 2006.

"He's a great leader, and an even better person," Edmonds said. "I think this is great. There's nobody that's going to work any harder than Mike."

Matheny's coaching staff could include some familiar names.

Pitching coach Dave Duncan, who was La Russa's right hand all 33 seasons, has one year remaining on his contract. The Cardinals have considered promoting Maloney in recent years, and Oquendo also could stay.

AMD ships '16-core' Bulldozer-powered Opteron 6200

We seem to have mislaid our definition of fashionably late -- a fortnight after the promised "October" launch, systems packing AMD's Bulldozer-powered Opteron 6200 (formerly Interlagos) will commence shipping to enterprise customers. If you haven't been paying too much attention, you might just believe the claim about it having 16 cores -- Bulldozer's architecture has eight two-core modules rather than 16 independent ones. Despite the short delay and the conspicuous claims, the company reckons it's 84 percent faster, 73 percent more efficient and uses half the power of the equivalent Intel Xeon. At the same time, Sunnyvale firmed up news on the Valencia (Opteron 4200) and announced 2012's Opteron 3000 platform with the new Zurich chip -- designed to run on low-power web hosts. Enterprise customers can read the PR we've got after the break and then begin placing orders; the rest of us will have to keep waiting to see if Andre Yang can push his FX all the way to 9GHz.

[Thanks, Khan]

(AP) ? Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy trusts his second-ranked Cowboys can handle the mounting pressure as they approach their final two games.

After beating Texas Tech 66-6 on Saturday, No. 2 Oklahoma State is likely two more victories away from playing for the national title.

"There is pressure. Each week I know you can feel it" said Gundy, whose team is 10-0 for the first time in school history. "But it's our responsibility to manage it."

"But I believe in the leadership of this team, that they feel the importance of getting ready for the next game."

Brandon Weeden threw for 423 yards and five touchdowns and Joseph Randle ran for three more scores to lead Oklahoma State.

The Cowboys, second in the BCS standings this week, next (7-0 Big 12) play at Iowa State before closing their season at home against Oklahoma in the Bedlam game.

Weeden, who completed 31 of 37 passes, threw touchdown passes of 2, 27, 28, 48 and 66 yards, and had no interceptions before his backup came in late in the third quarter. Justin Blackmon and Josh Cooper each had more than 100 receiving yards.

Weeden, 28, said the team isn't listening to the chatter about their season.

"Everyone has their opinion about where we are as a team," he said. "But really and truly the guys in the locker room, they don't buy into it. We're far enough along here, we've got something special going on, and they guys are just focused on getting better next week."

It was the Red Raiders' most lopsided loss ever and the most points allowed in program history. Seth Doege completed 25 of 43 passes for a season-low 169 yards and an interception for Texas Tech (5-5, 2-5).

The Cowboys dominated from the start, going up 21-0 in the first quarter. They ran at will and Weeden wasn't pressured much. He was sacked just once.

"I wouldn't trade him for anyone in the country," Gundy said. "I know there are some good ones out there, but I wouldn't put him on the trading block."

Stewart and Blackmon had two touchdowns each. Randle's rushing scores went for 2, 1 and 10 yards, and he finished with 78 yards on 18 carries.

Hershel Sims led the Cowboy with 109 yards on 13 carries.

The Cowboys led the nation in takeaways coming into the game (31) and got three more against the Red Raiders.

They scored off all three first-half turnovers by Texas Tech, including a fumbled kickoff return by the Red Raiders. Ben McRoy fumbled the ball into the end zone and teammate Kenny Williams recovered it momentarily when it rolled out onto the field.

Williams lost the handle and couldn't find the ball, which eventually was recovered at the 3 and taken in for a score by Josh Stewart to make it 35-0.

About two minutes earlier Stewart had caught a 27-yard touchdown pass from Weeden to make it 21-0. He got another TD on a 66-yarder from Weeden just before the senior quarterback left the game.

Texas Tech has lost three straight since winning 41-38 at Oklahoma, and has been outscored 159-33.

"We got to a point about Oklahoma, we thought we were playing pretty good," Red Raiders coach Tommy Tuberville said. "And then we come back the next week and we played flat and we just never recouped. We'll find out a lot about ourselves the next two weeks."

It is the second time this season that the Cowboys have led by 49 points at half. Oklahoma State was up 56-7 against Kansas early last month in Stillwater.

The most points allowed by Texas Tech before Saturday came at Oklahoma in 2008 when the Red Raiders lost 65-21.

The 49-0 halftime score was the most points scored against Texas Tech in a half and the Red Raiders' largest deficit since at least 2000.

Texas Tech didn't score until early in the third quarter.

In the first half, the Red Raiders punted four times, gave up two fumbles and an interception. They have two more tries ? at Missouri and at Baylor ? to get a sixth win and be bowl eligible

Tech finally got on the scoreboard early in the second half on a turnover by OSU on its opening possession. Randle caught a pass from Weeden behind the line of scrimmage and Terrance Bullitt forced a fumble which Cornelius Douglas ran in from 37 yards to pull the Red Raiders within 49-6. They missed the extra point.

Texas Tech's worst loss in Big 12 play at home came in 2000 when they lost to Nebraska 56-3. The most points the Red Raiders had allowed at home came in 1983 when Tulsa beat them 59-20.

Herman Cain Jokes About Anita Hill on Camera

Presidential hopeful Herman Cain, already facing allegations of sexual harassment from four women, was caught joking about Anita Hill during a campaign stop this week.

A college professor, Hill infamously became the poster woman for such claims when she made them 20 years ago about Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas.

A Fox News camera caught Cain laughing about Hill during a campaign visit to Kalamazoo, Mich., Thursday, when a supporter brought up the professor's name.

"You hear the latest news today? Anita Hill is going to come …" a man told Cain. "Is she going to endorse me?" Cain joked, as he and the crowd laughed heartily ...

Herman Cain insisted later that he wasn't trying to insult Hill.

"We walked into this room and ... one of my supporters said, 'Anita Hill was trying to contact you' and my response was, 'Is she going to endorse me?'" he said.

"He said it in a humorous way. I gave a humorous response."

The Republican continues to fend off allegations that he sexually harassed four women when he was head of the National Restaurant Association in the 1990s.

Karen Kraushaar allegedly received a settlement to leave the group along with another woman. Sharon Bialek alleges Cain tried to grope her at a later date.

Joking about Hill, while essentially harmless, is not likely to help Cain, who some say has been less than forthcoming, shake the story that has dogged him for weeks.

How will the sexual harassment allegations impact Cain?
