VIENNA (AP) ? Hoses weren't the only things uncoiling at this blaze. Austrian firefighters answering an alarm found something their training didn't prepare them for ? a trove of highly venomous snakes.
Fire department spokesman Franz Resperger says 85 fire fighters beat a hasty retreat from a burning barn east of Vienna after a neighbor told them to watch out for the reptiles kept by the owner inside.
The blaze was finally quenched Tuesday after an expert summoned to the scene captured seven snakes, including an Indian cobra and two Australian taipans ? all packing potent venom that Resperger said there was no antidote for in Austria.
He says one of the reptiles was nearly 2 meters ? over 2 yards ? long.

KHARTOUM (Reuters) ? The United Nations has received alarming reports of malnutrition in two Sudanese border states where the army is fighting insurgents, a senior U.N. official said on Wednesday.
Fighting broke out in June between the Sudanese army and SPLM-North rebels in South Kordofan and spread in September to the state of Blue Nile. Both states border newly independent South Sudan.
The violence has already forced about 417,000 people to flee their homes, more than 80,000 of them to South Sudan, the United Nations estimates. Locals have faced air raids and sporadic ground fighting, according to rights groups and refugees.
"I received alarming reports with respect to malnutrition and the food situation, particular in areas that are controlled by SPLM-North," Valerie Amos, U.N. Under-Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs, told reporters in Khartoum.
She urged Sudan to lift a ban on international U.N. staff traveling to both border states.
Since the outbreak of fighting U.N. agencies and aid groups have only been able to keep small teams of local staff on the ground and the government has stopped any aid workers visiting areas where there has been fighting.
"We need to ensure that the U.N. capacity, which is there to support government efforts, is made up of a mix of U.N. staff, national and international, to make sure we have the right skill set of support," Amos said after talks with Sudanese officials.
Social and Welfare Minister Amira Fadhil told journalists the ban was there to protect foreign workers and would stay in place.
"We fear for the security of foreigners. That's why we think the presence of a Sudanese organization makes sense. But we want to grant access as soon as possible," she added.
South Sudan declared independence in July, under the terms of a 2005 peace deal that ended decades of civil war with the Khartoum government.
Both Blue Nile and South Kordofan contain groups who sided with the south in the civil war and say they continue to face persecution inside Sudan.
SPLM-N is one of a groups of rebel movements in underdeveloped border areas who say they are fighting to overthrow Sudan's President Omar Hassan al-Bashir and end what they see as the dominance of the Khartoum political elite.
Sudan and South Sudan, who still have to resolve a range of issues including the sharing of oil revenues, regularly trade accusations of supporting insurgencies on each other's territory.
Their armed forces clashed at Jau in a region claimed by both sides last month in a rare direct confrontation.

New season, which premieres Thursday at 10 p.m. ET on MTV, finds the 'Shore' gang getting back to basics.

If there's an underlying plotline to the fifth season of MTV's "Jersey Shore" — which premieres Thursday at 10 p.m. — it may very well be "There's no place like home."
That's according to the "Shore" stars themselves, who told MTV News that, unlike their Italian holiday, the new season of the show is short on infighting, head-butting, vehicular mishaps, ill-fated hookups, malicious dog-poop capers and drama of all varieties and long on what they've come to be known for — namely, partying.
"You're gonna see a lighter side of us in Jersey," Ronnie assured us. "We have a lot more fun as compared to Italy. People were fighting, running heads into walls, bottles being thrown — it was just a lot of drama. Jersey is going to be a lot more fun."
"You'll actually see how much we miss Jersey. We missed it so much, we just hit the ground running," added Pauly D, who's already gone on record as saying season five is his "best." "The second we got back from Italy, we went straight to Jersey and just had fun with it."
Part of that fun involved getting back to basics — the kinds of things that were tough to come by in Italy and core tenets that any and all "Jersey Shore" fanatics know by heart.
"Stuff you take for granted on a day-to-day basis, that's what we wanted to do," Pauly said. "Haircut, gym, tanning ... Vinny was cutting our hair."
"We wanted easy girls," Vinny added with a laugh.
Yep, they're definitely back.
The fifth season of "Jersey Shore" premieres Thursday, January 5, at 10 p.m. ET/PT on MTV. For continuing "Shore" coverage, be sure to check in with MTV's Remote Control blog.

It looks like Microsoft is pushing a new, but minor, update to its Windows Phone operating system in some European countries. WPCentral.com reports that folks in Italy have the new update, OS build 8107, for their LG Optimus 7 devices. The update comes with a list of what's changed and new in this update.
As one might expect, this new version is basically a patch to fix a number of bugs and issues. One of the bug fixes supposedly deals with the "disappearing touch screen keyboard" problem that has been reported on smartphones with Windows Phone 7.5 installed. It also deals with a problem with syncing a user's Gmail client.
There's also an email fix for users of Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 in this new update along with a fix related to a notification of voicemail. The new build also pulls the certificates issued by DigiCert Sdn Bhd "to solve a problem of encryption". Finally the new update deals with a location problem with WiFI access points and antennas.
There's no word as to when Microsoft plans to release this new version of Windows Phone 7.5 out to other wireless carriers, including any of the phones here in the US.

Tis? the season for denim. While the heat of summer can make the combination of denim and fitted caps rather oppressive, such is definitely not the case in the cooler months. You don?t have to take my word for it, just pick one up for yourself and feel the difference it makes on a cold Winter day. This NEW ERA 59Fifty fitted cap features a Dark Blue denim crown with LA Dodgers logo embroidered on the front panel in Turquoise with an Orange outline. Available now at CAPKING.

The first question Cape Bretons ask when you arrive in this remote but rather gorgeous bit of Canada is: ?What?s your father?s name??
It?s the quickest way to suss out your roots, which side of the fence you sit and whether you might be descended from some long lost relative across the seas to the east, a five-hour or so flight away in Scotland. There?s been much water under the bridge since the 18th and 19th centuries when thousands of persecuted Scots abandoned their homes to seek their fortunes in the land called Nova Scotia but the phonebooks and businesses still carry dozens of names associated with Scotland ? Campbell and Macdonald, McCulloch and MacInnis...
Nowadays, questioning about one?s parentage ? for the record, Gomersall comes from Yorkshire, though we do have Scottish blood on my mother?s side of the family ? is more idle interest than suspicious inquisition. But when Scots ? and Irish, too ? first came here, it was all about sticking together, united in song, music, religion, and culture.
Now Canadians from all over the country celebrate their roots with the annual Celtic Colours International Festival in October celebrating all things, well, Celtic. But you can also visit any time and easily experience the ?Scottishness? of Nova Scotia, in particular Cape Breton.
Atlantic Canada comprises the four provinces of New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. This vast region has spectacular coastal scenery and tree-packed national parks, fantastic whale watching, delicious food and drink, and a whole lot of history.
Covering 6,500 sq km, Cape Breton Island lies off the north eastern coast of Nova Scotia to which it is connected via a causeway at Port Hastings, a three-hour drive from Halifax. I started my tour in Iona, where the region?s Gaelic roots are celebrated at the Highland Village Museum (www.highlandvillage.ca).
It is one of those ?living history? recreations featuring costumed ?villagers? who sing and tell tales, and the homes and buildings they might have lived in from the 1770s to the 1920s ? including a blackhouse from the Highlands, church, schoolhouse, forge and general store. You can learn to speak Gaelic, how to rug hook and weave, and see some Soay sheep and Highland cattle. Roots Cape Breton is an on-site computerised genealogy and family history centre for those researching their background.
Driving clockwise around the coast, the next stop is Baddeck, a town beside the beautiful Bras d?Or lakes. A favourite destination for picnics, boat rides and boutiques, probably its most famous resident was Alexander Graham Bell, creator of the telephone, among other inventions. There?s a whole museum dedicated to the Edinburgh-born innovator.
Before moving on, I joined a Rug Hooking for Absolute Beginners class at the local Fire Department Community Centre, part of the Celtic Colours International Festival (www.celtic-colours.com). It?s a kind of weaving using fine strips of cloth. You have to be very patient and crafty; I am neither.
Braddock marks the start of the Cabot Trail, a route that has been called one of the most beautiful in the world as it rises up spectacular cliffs and dips in and out of the Cape Breton National Park at the northern end of the region.
On the way, you can stop off in St Ann?s at the Gaelic College of Celtic Arts & Crafts, to perhaps buy a bit of rug hooking you can pass off as your own later. Better still, go sea kayaking with the marvellous Angelo Spinazzola, owner of North River Kayaks (www.northriverkayak.com). You may guess, he?s not a full-blooded Scot but you can forgive him thanks to his hugely entertaining trips out in quiet St Ann?s Bay, past bald eagles and gorgeous scenery which owes nothing to mankind.
The further north you go, the more the landscapes remind you of the Highlands, with pine trees as far as the eye can see, wild shores whipped by angry waves, roads that climb up and up then seem to disappear on the horizon ? you need to be a confident driver to cope.
South is Cheticamp, a picturesque French Arcadian fishing village renowned for its arts and crafts ? stop off at Les Trois Pignons, the Museum of Hooked Rugs & Home Life, to see masterful examples of the art. And pop your head in the Doryman Beverage Room nearby ? if you?re lucky, there?ll be a gig to enjoy, perhaps from local fiddler Chrissy Crowley or another of the brilliant young musicians the region is producing.
Cape Breton?s Celtic Music Interpretive Centre in Judique also stages regular lunchtime ceilidhs, so stop for a bite to eat before sampling the wares of the Glenora Distillery in Glenville. Here, Canada?s only single malt whisky is produced and you can book a tour of the premises, and even stay in its boutique rooms. Enjoy fine seafood in the restaurant before snuggling up by the fire to listen to some more traditional music.
Before heading back to Halifax, there?s another site with strong Scottish connections you shouldn?t miss. The Hector was the ship that brought the first wave of emigrants from Scotland to Nova Scotia in 1773, and a full-sized replica of the vessel is on show at the Hector Heritage Quay in Pictou (www.shiphector.ca), along with a fascinating mini-museum on the subject.
In Halifax itself, there?s plenty more Scottish heritage to be found: two British Army units, the 78th Highlanders and the 3rd Brigade Royal Artillery, lived and worked at Halifax Citadel from 1896 to 1871, and volunteers now reenact their history, complete with kilts and bagpipes.
A visit to the Canadian Museum of Immigration on the waterfront provides an excellent explanation of what it must have been like to arrive here as one of the millions of immigrants who passed through Pier 21 from 1928 onwards (www.pier21.ca), including thousands of Scots.
End your visit to Nova Scotia with a tour of Alexander Keith?s Nova Scotia Brewery. Keith, born in Scotland in 1795, arrived here in 1817 after a five-year apprenticeship in the art of brewing. By 25 he was running his own brewery, his India Pale Ale the toast of not just the region, but the whole of Canada and beyond. No wonder he was mayor of Halifax three times. Cheers!

Taylor Armstrong breaks the news to her friends that her marriage to Russell Armstrong is over.
By Lia Haberman, E! Online
Aloha!
The gang was Hawaii-bound on last night's episode of "Real Housewives of Beverly Hills." But this was no "Brady Bunch" Tiki trip. The getaway, to celebrate Mauricio Umansky's birthday, was first class all the way (minus one budget island hopper).
However, not all of the usual suspects made it to the tropics. Taylor Armstrong was still?persona non grata?among her 90210 pals because of her hubby's threatening email to Camille Grammer. And?Kim Richards?seemed determined to prove she's physically incapable of actually following through on any travel plans.
But who needs 'em?! Whatever last night's show might have been lacking in drama, it made up for with plenty of eye candy!
MORE:?So True? So False? Did "Real Housewives of Beverly Hills's" Brandi Glanville Tie the Knot?
Kyle Richards' streak as the Bev Hills housewife with the hottest husband shows no sign of slowing as Mauricio walks into their bedroom topless and sweaty from a workout. Did Bravo producers push him to do it? Who cares? It may be the man's birthday but the show's giving back to us all. And judging by scenes from next week's episode, the skin fest continues for Umansky fans.?
But not everybody appreciates a set of golden abs. After Brandi compares Kim's boyfriend Ken to a "gay bullmastiff," there's a cutaway to Kim:?"Everybody has different taste. I don't think Maurice is the most handsome guy on the block."
(Bizarre sidenote: A Google search for bullmastiff proves Brandi's not entirely wrong.)?
MORE:?"Real Housewives'" Taylor Armstrong Talks First Christmas After Russell's Suicide
It's unclear why Kim and her facially-challenged boyfriend don't make it to Hawaii with the rest of the cast. A trail of phone calls suggest a broken alarm clock, an expired license, a lost set of keys, booking issues and an aversion to traveling in the a.m. Take your pick.
Back in Los Angeles, Taylor's venting to her TV-friendly therapist, Dr. Sophy, about missing the luau because of Russell's friction with her friends. "It's time for a tough decision," says the doc. And by the end of the episode, Taylor's telling Kyle and Lisa that she's left her husband -- bringing us one step closer to Russell's suicide.?
After two seasons of suffering through Taylor's marital woes, this resolution may be a little too tidy, but we're not objecting. This is one incredibly tragic storyline that everyone knows is going to end miserably and the sooner it's over the better, (in our humble opinion).
MORE: "Real Housewives of Beverly Hills" Recap: "Friends Don't Threaten to Sue Friends"
Back on the beach,?Brandi Glanville's offering an eyeful. The ankle cast is gone, replaced by an attention-grabbing crochet bikini that just barely covers the R-rated stuff. And the show's resident loudmouth promises she's going to get even raunchier after popping some Xanax to get through the flight.
(We assume she means the puddle jumper portion from Honolulu to Lanai, because the first-class trip from LAX on Hawaiian Airlines looks like an upscale cocktail party -- or possibly Heaven -- minus the deejay.)
But dissing Kim's boyfriend, putting on a fake British accent and having a roving nipple aren't all that outrageous. Leave it to Lisa to land all the funniest lines as she makes cracks about Brandi's butt floss and her own sex life.?
MORE:?Rehabbing "Housewives" Star Kim Richards "Doing Fantastic," Says Sister Kyle Richards
It looks like Hawaii's magic is working on?Lisa as she vows to break her "Christmas and birthdays only" rule. And hubby?Ken Todd's not the only one about to get Lei'd. Even Paul Nessif thinks the Pineapple Island charm and lack of kids is gonna get him some sexy time with wife Adrienne Maloof.?
PHOTOS: Before They Were Housewives
So what do you think: Will all the couples come back cozier? Will Kim come up with a good excuse for missing the flight, or do you wish she'd stayed on the Mainland? Are you anxious to be done with Taylor and Russell's doomed relationship? And if Mauricio isn't the most handsome guy on the block, who is??Share your thoughts on our Facebook page.
