Usain Bolt to be Jamaica's Olympic flag bearer

LONDON (AP) ? Usain Bolt will carry the Jamaican flag in the opening ceremony of the London Olympics.

"Carrying the flag is an honor," Bolt said Thursday. "For my country Jamaica, I'll do anything ? to be on TV. I'm happy. I'm looking forward to tomorrow."

At the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Bolt set world records in winning the 100 and 200 meters. He also helped the Jamaican team set a world record in the 4x100 relay for a third gold medal.

But Bolt will enter the London Olympics after losing to teammate Yohan Blake in the 100 and 200 at the Jamaican trials.

(AP) ? Europe is on the brink again. The region's debt crisis flared on Monday as fears intensified that Spain would be next in line for a government bailout.

A recession is deepening in Spain, the fourth-largest economy that uses the euro currency, and a growing number of its regional governments are seeking financial lifelines to make ends meet. The interest rate on Spanish government bonds soared in a sign of waning market confidence in the country's ability to pay off its debts.

The prospect of bailing out Spain is worrisome for Europe because the potential cost far exceeds what's available in existing emergency funds. Financial markets are also growing uneasy about Italy, another major European economy with large debts and a feeble economy.

Stocks fell sharply across Europe and around the world. Germany's DAX plunged 3.18 percent. Britain's FTSE dropped 2 percent and France's CAC 40 fell 2.89 percent. In midday trading on Wall Street, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 1.35 percent. The euro slipped just below $1.21 against the dollar, its lowest reading since June 2010.

The interest rate on its 10-year bond hit 7.56 percent in the morning, its highest level since Spain joined the euro in 1999.

Concern over Spain increased Monday after the country's central bank said the economy shrank by 0.4 percent during the second quarter, compared with the previous three months. The government predicts the economy won't return to growth until 2014 as new austerity measures hurt consumers and businesses.

On top of that, Spain is facing new costs as a growing number of regional governments ask federal authorities for assistance. The eastern region of Valencia revealed Friday it would need a bailout from the central Madrid government. Over the weekend, the southern region of Murcia said it may also need help.

Spain has already required an emergency loan package of up to ?100 billion ($121 billion) to bail out its banks. But that aid hasn't quelled markets because the government is ultimately liable to repay the money. It had been hoped that responsibility for repayments would shift from the government to the banks. But that shift is a long way off ? a pan-European banking authority would have to be created first and that could be years away.

Yet it is far more than Spain's struggle that has unnerved markets.

Greece is still struggling with a mountain of debt and international creditors will visit the country Tuesday to check on the country's attempts reform its economy. There is concern that officials from the European Commission, European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund will find that that Greece is not living up to the terms of its bailouts and could withhold future funds.

Italy has also been caught up in fears that it may be pushed into asking for aid. Italy's economy is stagnating and markets are worried that it may soon not be able to maintain its debt burden of ?1.9 trillion ($2.32 trillion) ? the biggest in the eurozone after Greece. Interest rates on Italy's government bonds rose steeply Monday while its stock market dropped 2.76 percent.

The collapse in stock prices in Italy and Spain prompted regulators to introduce temporary bans on short-selling ? a practice where traders sell stocks they don't already own in the hope they can make a profit if the stock falls in price.

Pascal Lamy, director of the World Trade Organization, said after a meeting with French President Francois Holland that the situation in Europe is "difficult, very difficult, very difficult, very difficult."

Ireland, Greece and Portugal have already taken bailout loans after they could no longer afford to borrow on bond markets. Yet those countries are tiny compared to Italy and Spain, the third- and fourth-largest economies in the eurozone. Analysts say a full bailout for both could strain the other eurozone countries' financial resources.

Spain has already received a commitment of up to ?100 billion from other eurozone countries to bail out its banks, which suffered heavy losses from bad real estate loans. Eurozone finance ministers signed off on the aid Friday and said ?30 billion would be made available right away. But that incremental step cuts little ice with investors. If Spain's borrowing rates continue to rise, the government may end up being locked out of international markets and be forced to seek a financial rescue.

"Events since Friday have been a clear wake-up call to anyone who thought that the Spanish bank rescue package had bought a calm summer for the euro crisis," analyst Carsten Brzeski said.

The eurozone's bailout fund, the European Stability Mechanism, has only ?500 billion in lending power, with ?100 billion potentially committed to Greece. Italy and Spain together have debt burdens of around ?2.5 trillion. And the ESM hasn't yet been ratified by member states plus eurozone governments have made it clear they won't put more money into the pot.

That once again pushes the European Central Bank into the frontline against the crisis.

On Saturday, Spain's Foreign Minister Jos? Manuel Garc?a Margallo pleaded for help, saying that only the European Central Bank could halt the panic. But the ECB has shown little willingness to restart its program to purchase the government bonds of financially troubled countries. The central bank has already bought more than ?200 billion in bonds since May 2010, with little lasting impact on the crisis.

The central bank has also cut its benchmark interest rates to a record low of 0.75 percent in the hope of kick-starting lending. Yet many economists question how much stimulus this provides as the rates are already very low ? and no one wants to borrow anyway.

There has been speculation the ECB could eventually have to follow the Bank of England and the U.S. Federal Reserve and embark on a program of "quantitative easing" ? buying up financial assets across the eurozone to increase the supply of money. That could assist governments by driving down borrowing costs as well.

But so-called QE is fraught with potential legal trouble for the ECB ? a European treaty forbids it from helping governments borrow.

In the case of Greece, the country is dependent on foreign bailout loans to pay its bills. A cutoff of aid over its inability to meet the loan conditions would leave it without any source of financing ? and could push it to exit the euro so it can print its own money to cover its debts.

Germany's economy minister, Phillip Roesler, said the prospect of Greece leaving the euro was now so familiar it had "had lost its horror" and that he was skeptical Athens would meet conditions for continuing rescue money.

The deteriorating situation follows a summit June 28-29 that many hoped would convince markets political leaders were getting a handle on things. The summit agreed on easier access to bailout money and to set up a single banking regulator that could take the burden of bank bailouts off national governments. Yet many of those changes will take months or years to introduce ? and there has been no increase in bailout money.

It is an echo of a similar summit in July 2011, when leaders agreed on a second bailout and debt reduction for Greece, only to see borrowing costs spike dramatically as leaders headed off for August vacations.

Stephen Lewis, chief economist at Monument Securites Ltd, said that "events are following a pattern often repeated in the course of the eurozone's troubles, in which the powers-that-be hail progress only to see confidence, almost instantaneously, plumb fresh depths."

Hypnosis For Improving Athletic Performance | The Secret & The ...

Hypnotherapy has progressed to the point where it can now be applied to any field. Sports and athletics have also made use of this technique so as to motivate players and contestants. This is a new age concept that has gripped the sports world and stress isn't just being laid on their physical fitness but also on their emotional and mental wellbeing.

Use of Images

Hypnosis uses imagery as a technique to stimulate the consciousness of deeper levels of the mind. When the brain sees image of an excellent performance, it sends the message to your body. Hypnotists are known to prompt a thing by the name of muscle memory in the athlete?s mind.

By utilizing images of a good performer, they allow the recipient to absorb the subtleties of a successful sportsman. By visualising a brilliant performance, the sportsman reinforces it in his mind and starts associating it with his performance. This realigns the brain and body to reach the same goal thereby improving an athlete?s performance.

Decreasing of Stress

During hypnosis, the mind becomes relaxed. The feelings are in control and the focus is on delivering a better performance.

Release

Hypnosis allows you to release unhealthy emotions and cleans your thought-process. A positive person will always deliver better results than someone who is tied down with mental luggage. Hypnosis is the best way to vent out such unwelcome feelings.

Building Confidence

Hypnosis is a good system to overcome mental blocks. It can offer you a new start and alter your thought process. Once you've conquered and dumped your negative feelings, you can push on. This enables you to renew your confidence and belief in your abilities.

Target Performance

With hypnosis, a sports figure can channelize his feelings and emotions and only permit his brain to focus on the sports event. This channelizing of energies increases the senses and reinforces the performance.

Self Hypnosis

Athletes have been observed to make use of this system before their big event. This permits an athlete to wash out all unnecessary thoughts and feelings to chill the body and spirit. You can accomplish this, by sitting or lying down in a quiet room without any disturbance. It'll bring a sense of clam over you pushing up your ability to concentrate on the task at hand.

State of Awareness

Hypnosis gives you higher sense of awareness. This gives you a bigger capability to concentrate and helps you to visualise. The strategies become clear in this state and you can plan your game according to the final results that you want to achieve. Put simply you program yourself to meet your targets.

A Performance ?High?

When a sportsman is happy after completing a session or winning the competition a condition of welfare is achieved. Hypnosis permits the athlete to retrieve these sensations and this helps the athlete to feel more assured and reared up for another good performance.

Genetic mutations that cause common childhood brain tumors ...

STANFORD, Calif. ? Researchers at the Stanford University School of Medicine and Lucile Packard Children's Hospital have identified several gene mutations responsible for the most common childhood brain tumor, called medulloblastoma, adding evidence to the theory that the diagnosis is a group of genetically distinct cancers with different prognoses. These and accompanying findings are likely to lead to less-toxic, better-targeted treatment approaches over the next two years, the researchers said.

"We tend to treat all medulloblastomas as one disease without taking into account how heterogeneous the tumors are at the molecular level," said Yoon-Jae Cho, MD, an assistant professor of neurology and neurological sciences at Stanford, a pediatric neurologist at Packard Children's and the senior author of the new research. "This paper represents a finer-grained view of the genetic landscape of these tumors and provides us with some leads on how to develop new therapies."

The research, which will appear online in Nature July 22, is part of a large, ongoing effort to characterize genetic errors in medulloblastoma. Two companion studies on which Cho is a co-author will be published simultaneously with his paper. The three papers came from a consortium that involves scientists at Stanford, Packard Children's, the Broad Institute, Children's Hospital Boston, the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, the German Cancer Research Center, Brandeis University and the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto.

Current treatment for medulloblastoma, which originates in the cerebellum and affects about 250 U.S. children each year, begins with surgery to remove as much of the tumor as possible. Patients then receive a combination of radiation and chemotherapy, but the treatments are not tailored to the tumor's genetic characteristics.

Cho's team extracted DNA from 92 medulloblastoma tumors and compared it with DNA from matched blood samples from the same patients, uncovering 12 significant "point mutations" ? single-letter errors in the genetic code ? that occurred frequently in the brain cancer. A handful of the mutations had been previously identified in smaller studies of medulloblastoma, but several mutations were novel in both medulloblastoma and in cancer.

Among the newly identified mutations was one in an RNA helicase gene, DDX3X, which Cho said is the second-most common mutation in medulloblastoma tumors. "Mutations in this gene have now also been identified in other tumor types, such as chronic lymphocytic leukemia, and head and neck tumors," he said.

However, the researchers found that it was rare for the same gene mutated in several different patients' tumors. More commonly, mutations involving a set of genes regulating a single biological pathway were found in the tumors ? a pattern that is emerging across cancer genome sequencing efforts.

Though no single tumor in the study carried all 12 mutations, the researchers were able to categorize the tumors according to which mutations they possessed. "We now understand that there are certain tumors with particular genetic signatures that are really resistant to standard treatments," Cho said. Children with medulloblastoma do not routinely have their tumors' genetic signatures characterized, but Cho believes that such characterization coupled with targeted therapies could greatly enhance tumor treatment.

About two-thirds of medulloblastoma patients now survive five years past diagnosis, but many survivors suffer lasting physical or intellectual side effects from their cancer treatments. Drugs tailored to a tumor's genetic profile have the potential to save more patients while reducing side effects, Cho said.

Several of the mutations discovered affect cellular signals that switch large groups of genes on and off. "The dysregulation of these 'epigenetic programs' is becoming a common theme not only in medulloblastoma but across cancer," Cho said. Such pathways may be good targets for cancer drugs; indeed, drugs targeting one such pathway (histone methyltransferases) are currently in pre-clinical development, while agents against another pathway (Hedgehog signaling pathway) are entering phase-2 clinical trials for medulloblastoma.

Cho is the co-chair of a committee within the Pediatric Brain Tumor Consortium that guides which drugs should be moved into clinical trials next. "Our plan is that within the next one to two years we will be able to offer kids a new set of compounds that have a clear biological rationale based on our genomic studies." Cho said. "We want to make sure we're being careful of what we move forward with, but at the same time, for some of these kids we don't have many, if any, effective and durable treatment options."

This actually happens at our house fairly often. We?ll make a recipe and find that our kids hate it, so they only eat a little and we have a lot left over. Or we?ll follow a recipe that ?serves six? but actually produces enough food to feed a small army.

These situations mean that you?re stuck with fresh vegetables, rice, beans, or other staples that could certainly be used in a recipe, but to do so would completely throw off your meal plan and leave something else on the countertop for too long.

Don?t throw those extras away. And don?t just shove them into the back of the fridge, either, because that?ll just eventually result in throwing them away.

Instead,?freeze them and use them at a later date.

Almost any extra ingredient that you have on hand can be frozen and used in the future. The trick is simply knowing?how?to freeze the item without damaging it.

For a one-stop shop, She Knows offers?a great collection of tactics?for freezing various fresh items. This will handle most of the things you commonly want to freeze.

For rice, I just put about two cups of cooked rice into a quart-sized freezer bag. I expel all of the extra air and flatten the bag for easy stacking. When I want to re-use it, I put a tablespoon of water along with the contents of the bag into a microwave-safe bowl, cover it with a plate, and microwave it for about 30 seconds. Stir it and it works great!

For us, the big key is to?remember what you?ve frozen. It?s easy to forget what things you?ve frozen and tossed in the freezer if you do it regularly.

Our solution is to?label. I usually use masking tape for labels so that I can just peel it off the bag and then reuse the bag for another frozen item after cleaning it.

Another good tactic is to?keep a list on the front of your freezer?detailing all of the frozen items that you?ll find in there, which can help a lot when planning meals and preparing a grocery list.

Whenever you throw away a staple food, you?re throwing away money. If it?s easy to put that staple food right into the freezer and then pull it out at a later date for a recipe, there?s no reason not to do it.

Building a First Aid Kit for Camping | Travel & Leisure - Claychan ...

Before you head out, make sure you are prepared with the basics in case of any minor injuries that might occur while out in the wilderness. When hiking, each backpack should carry one. You never know if you will get separated from your party. All the items are very inexpensive and serve an important purpose in making a victim more comfortable and is not a replacement for medical attention.

  • Assorted bandages and gauze rolls (include at least one small elastic bandage)
  • Antiseptic creams and ointments
  • Pain Medication
  • Tweezers, scissors, and knife
  • Sunburn care (Sunscreen, aloe vera, burn cream)
  • Anti-diarrhea medication
  • Saline solution
  • Benedryl

Because the threat of scrapes and cuts is so high while you camp, several different sizes of bandages are recommended. Make sure there are some that fit small children if they will be with you. Gauze pads and rolls are nice for the types of wounds that bandages can?t cover up. A roll of first aid tape might come in handy too and the elastic bandage for sprains. Generally small ones for the arms and hands, large ones for the legs and feet. These also work great to hold an ice pack on the head or mid-section of the body.

Neosporin, hydrogen peroxide, and Calamine Lotion are nice to have for preventing infections. Always use the Neosporin under a bandaid. Washing cuts and scrapes with the peroxide helps to kill germs that cause infection and washing with sterile saline before bandaging promotes healing. Calamine is applied to bites or plant allergies like poison ivy to relieve itching and prevent fingernails from tearing the skin up.

Tylenol and Advil for adults and kids are great pain management medications for minor accidents. Follow manufacturer guidelines when taking these medications. Both can be used for pain and Advil, or Ibuprofen, can be taken to reduce swelling.

Tweezers are great for removing splinters and slivers, which happens a lot! Use the scissors or a knife to cut the tape and gauze.

Keeping your sunscreen in your first aid kit is smart, then you will always know where it is at. Bring lotion and aloe for sunburn care but also burn cream in the event of campfire injuries.

Many times, the food eaten while camping will not agree with your stomach so Pepto Bismol and Immodium are nice to have with you when those very uncomfortable moments strike in your camp. Throwing in some Tums isn?t a bad idea either!

When buying saline solution, be certain it does not contain extra chemicals used to clean contact lenses. Only get straight saline for rinsing wounds or flushing debris out of eyes.

One item I never camp without is Benedryl. Sometimes one just never knows what the heck they are really allergic to until they have nothing with them to help the reaction. A Murphy?s Law deal perhaps? Take it with you whether you are allergic to anything or not. You may find someone in need of your assistance and save their life with it. It is always better to be prepared.

Find a container to house all of these things together so when anything happens, everyone in your party knows where to go to take care of their ailments. Make it a rule that anything taken out is returned (with the exception of bandages, ha!) so there is never a moment of panic hunting for a piece of the puzzle. When leaving for a daytrip, be sure all members with you have a small kit with them just in case. It is better to be safe than sorry. Happy Camping! ?For more information about RV travel and RV vacation, there?s great information online.
