Two members of Russia's anti-Kremlin punk band Pussy Riot have fled the country to avoid prosecution for staging a protest against President Vladimir Putin at a church altar, the band said on Sunday.

A Moscow court sentenced three members of the all-female opposition band to two years in prison on Aug. 17 for staging a "punk prayer" at the Christ the Saviour Cathedral in February and calling on the Virgin Mary to rid Russia of Putin.

The sentence drew sharp international criticism of the Russian government, while opposition groups at home have portrayed it as part of a Kremlin clampdown on dissent.

Police said earlier this week they were searching for other members of the band.

"In regard to the pursuit, two of our members have successfully fled the country! They are recruiting foreign feminists to prepare new actions!," a Twitter account called Pussy Riot Group said.

Defence lawyers of the convicted Pussy Riot members - Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, Maria Alyokhina and Yekaterina Samutsevich - are expected to appeal against their sentences next week.

Tolokonnikova's husband, Pyotr Verzilov, told Reuters on Sunday that the two members of the group who have fled Russia had taken part in the cathedral protest along with his wife.

"Since the Moscow police said they are searching for them, they will keep a low profile for now. They are in a safe place beyond the reach of the Russian police," he said by phone.

Asked if that meant a country which had no extradition agreement with Russia, Verzilov said: "Yes, that suggests that."

"But you must remember that 12 or even 14 members who are still in Russia actively participate in the band's work now, it's a big collective," he added.

The Kremlin has dismissed criticism by Western governments and prominent musicians including Madonna and Sting as politically motivated.

Putin, back at the Kremlin since May for his third presidential term, said before the three band members were sentenced that they should not be judged too harshly.

Under Russian law the three Pussy Riot members put on trial could have faced as much as seven years' jail for hooliganism motivated by religious hatred, but the prosecutors asked for three years and they were sentenced to two.

News Summary: Fast food finds fans in Baghdad

FAST FOOD: A wave of new American-style restaurants is spreading across Baghdad, serving milkshakes, chili-cheese dogs and buckets of fried chicken.

HOME-GROWN: Iraqi entrepreneurs and investors from nearby countries, not big multinational chains, are driving the food craze. They see Iraq as an untapped market of increasingly adventurous eaters where competition is low and the potential returns are high.

DANGER: Dining out in Iraq is not without risk. Attackers have targeted restaurants and cafes, but Iraqis say the chance to relax over a meal out is worth the gamble. For them, the restaurants are a symbol of progress.

LG Intuition spied in press shots, leaves just one piece of the puzzle left

The LG Intuition may be one of Verizon's more poorly-kept secrets of recent memory. Apart from LG itself having confirmed that an Optimus Vu rebranding is due for the US within weeks, there's been pricing and even an uncannily detailed FCC filing to fill in the gaps. Why not throw official press images into the mix? From the renders DroidDog has managed to obtain, the Intuition is a bit more than just a one-for-one port of the original Korean phablet. While Verizon's influence is light outside of that attention-grabbing logo, there's a switch-up in the navigation keys to reflect that Android 4.0 will be there from the beginning -- a nice break from the ancient-feeling Android 2.3 layout of the original. About the only question left at this stage is that of the exact release date. There's a September 15th mention in one of the images, but we all know how dates in press imagery can be misleading.

Evidence for Polyomavirus BK Role in Prostate Cancer | Science ...

Prostate cancer is the leading cause of cancer morbidity and the third greatest cause of cancer death among men in developed countries. A major question in cancer research has been whether virus infection plays a role in cancers of the genitourinary tract. Now a team of Swiss investigators has new evidence suggesting human polyomavirus BK is involved in maintaining and enhancing an environment suitable for prostate cancer growth. The research, published in the August Journal of Virology, could lead to preventive and/or therapeutic prostate cancer vaccines.

The researchers found somewhat different immune responses against the virus' large tumor antigen between seropositive patients with prostate cancers, those seropositive patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (the benign enlargement of the prostate that is common in older males), and those without prostate abnormalities. In prostate cancer patients, especially those expressing the large tumor antigen in tumor tissue, and showing evidence of recurrence following treatment, the researchers found that this viral antigen seems to influence immune responses in ways that encourage development of the tumor, says principal investigator Maurizio Provanzano of the University of Zurich, Switzerland.

Provenzano lists three major reasons why polyomavirus BK might play a causal role in genitourinary tract cancers: the virus resides asymptomatically in the genitourinary tract of nearly 80 percent of young individuals; it is expressed in inflammatory lesions at very early stages of prostate cancer onset; and it binds and sequesters the tumor suppressor protein p53 in its wild-type form in the cytoplasm of infected cells.

Provenzano says that although the current results are not yet strong enough to prove that polyomavirus BK can cause prostate cancer, some findings suggest ways of fighting the cancer. For example, the strong association between the detection of the virus in prostate cancer and disease recurrence suggests that boosting their immune systems might protect virus-positive individuals.

A year on, Northeast towns struggle after Hurricane Irene

QUECHEE, Vermont (Reuters) - When Hurricane Irene's torrential rains transformed the sleepy Ottauquechee River into a roaring wall of gray-green water a year ago, the Simon Pearce glass and pottery gallery's future was in doubt.

Located in a renovated woolen mill on a narrow gap by the river, flood waters surged 25 feet above normal, filling the bottom two floors of one of Vermont's most popular tourist attractions. It destroyed more than $200,000 in blown glass vases and tableware and wiped out a 3,000-bottle wine cellar for the gallery's restaurant.

On top of that, Irene washed out a covered bridge that was the gallery's main link to the state highway that brought most of Simon Pearce's 300,000 annual visitors.

"It was a triple, quadruple whammy," says Andrew Pearce, director of special projects at the gallery and son of its eponymous founder, of the flood that caused $3 million in damages to the business. "So much of my dad's work was washed down the river in an afternoon. You can sit around and mope or roll up your sleeves and start shoveling."

As Hurricane Isaac threatens to hit Florida, many on the East Coast are still struggling to recover a year after Hurricane Irene.

Once the storm made landfall in North Carolina on August 27, it moved north to deluge the Northeast, causing 40 deaths and an estimated $10 billion in damage to homes, roads and other infrastructure as far north as Maine and Quebec.

Though doomsday forecasts of the hurricane hitting downtown Philadelphia or flooding New York's subway never occurred, Vermont and parts of upstate New York were hard-hit, suffering the worst flooding in more than eight decades.

In Margaretville, New York, a village 140 miles north of New York City that sits in a valley in the Catskill Mountains, a street festival had just finished when it began raining. Hours later floodwaters from a branch of the Delaware River, strong enough to carry giant round hay bales, surged down the Main Street, destroying virtually the entire business district of the 700-person town.

REBUILDING

The town's supermarket has reopened, but other businesses such as the local pub and a CVS drug store are being rebuilt, says Peter Molnar, a local innkeeper. The water crested eight feet above street level in one of Molnar's downtown lodgings, though he's repaired the damages with the help of a $30,000 grant from a local economic development agency.

"We're about 90 percent back," he said of the town. "We've seen the worst of Mother Nature and since then we've seen the best of human nature."

In Rochester, Vermont, a quiet brook that ran through a 200-year old cemetery burst its banks and tore through graves, scattering parts of about three dozen bodies up to three miles away and littering the main highway with remains.

A volunteer group of local funeral directors worked for a week to help restore the remains while local fire departments hauled in new caskets with off-road vehicles and groups of volunteers guarded the cemetery at night, says Thomas Harty, a funeral director from nearby Randolph, Vermon, who oversaw the work.

The task was complicated by the fact that a number of the remains carried away had been buried in an unmarked pauper's grave. Today remains of 23 bodies have been temporarily interred in concrete vaults while repairs to the cemetery continue, and unidentifiable remains are still being cataloged and occasionally uncovered.

"I never want to do it again," says Hardy, of the cleanup job. "For some years to come I anticipate we'll continue to make minor discoveries. Some hunter, some fisherman, some homeowner working along the back of their fields will make a discovery and we'll get a call."

At Simon Pearce, a crew of 30 employees spent two weeks working 11-hour days just to clear the debris from rooms filled with as much as five feet of mud. They dug out enough dirt and debris to fill 27 dump trucks and load two logging trucks with scrap metal.

With the help of $2.5 million in state and federal loans, Simon Pearce's parking lot is again filled with New York and Massachusetts license plates, and crowds gather to watch a half dozen artisans blow glass vases in a workshop that was filled to its ceiling with water a year ago.

"We used to use the saying ?come hell or high water,'" says Pearce. "Now we leave out the high water part."

Court upholds block on graphic cigarette warnings

(AP Photo/U.S. Food and Drug Administration, File)

(AP) ? The federal government can't require tobacco companies to put large graphic health warnings on cigarette packages to show that smoking can disfigure and even kill people, a divided federal appeals court panel ruled Friday.

In a 2-1 decision, the U.S. Court of Appeals in Washington affirmed a lower court ruling that the requirement ran afoul of the First Amendment's free speech protections. The appeals court tossed out the requirement and told the Food and Drug Administration to go back to the drawing board. The decision is considered a blow to one of the Obama administration's major public health initiatives, raises the prospect of another U.S. Supreme Court tobacco battle and opens the door to further challenges of FDA's regulatory scheme.

Some of the nation's largest tobacco companies, including R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co., sued to block the mandate to include warnings to show the dangers of smoking and encouraging smokers to quit lighting up. They argued that the proposed warnings went beyond factual information into anti-smoking advocacy. The government argued the photos of dead and diseased smokers are factual in conveying the dangers of tobacco, which is responsible for about 443,000 deaths in the U.S. a year.

The nine graphic warnings proposed by the FDA include color images of a man exhaling cigarette smoke through a tracheotomy hole in his throat, and a plume of cigarette smoke enveloping an infant receiving a mother's kiss. These are accompanied by language that says smoking causes cancer and can harm fetuses. The warnings were to cover the entire top half of cigarette packs, front and back, and include the phone number for a stop-smoking hotline, 1-800-QUIT-NOW.

In the majority opinion, the appeals court wrote that the case raises "novel questions about the scope of the government's authority to force the manufacturer of a product to go beyond making purely factual and accurate commercial disclosures and undermine its own economic interest ? in this case, by making 'every single pack of cigarettes in the country (a) mini billboard' for the government's anti-smoking message."

The court also wrote that the FDA "has not provided a shred of evidence" showing that the warnings will "directly advance" its interest in reducing the number of Americans who smoke.

Tobacco companies increasingly rely on their packaging to build brand loyalty and grab consumers ? one of the few advertising levers left to them after the government curbed their presence in magazines, billboards and TV.

"It's a significant vindication of First Amendment principles," said Floyd Abrams, an attorney representing Lorillard Tobacco. "There's never been any doubt that the government could require warnings on products that can have dangerous results. And what the court is saying is that there are real limits on the ability of the government to require the manufacturer of a lawful product to denounce the product in the course of trying to sell it."

The FDA declined to comment on pending litigation and the Justice Department said it would review the appeals court ruling.

In a statement, the Department of Health and Human Services said the administration is "determined to do everything we can" to warn people about the dangers of smoking, and that the labels are an "effective tool" in those efforts.

Public health groups are urging the government to appeal.

"While the tobacco industry has grown increasingly aggressive in preying upon the American public with misleading and fraudulent marketing practices over several decades, the warning labels have not been changed in 25 years," John R. Seffrin, chief executive of the American Cancer Society, said in a statement. "Existing warnings have failed to inform the public adequately of the risks of tobacco use. ... We hope the government can identify ways that the FDA can move forward with the new cigarette warning labels."

Warning labels first appeared on U.S. cigarette packs in 1965, and current warning labels that feature a small box with text were put on cigarette packs in the mid-1980s. Changes to more graphic warning labels that feature color images of the negative effects of tobacco use were mandated in a law passed in 2009 that, for the first time, gave the federal government authority to regulate tobacco.

The share of Americans who smoke has fallen dramatically since 1970, from nearly 40 percent to about 20 percent. But the rate has stalled since about 2004, with about 46 million adults in the U.S. smoking cigarettes. It's unclear why it hasn't budged, but some experts have cited tobacco company discount coupons on cigarettes and lack of funding for programs to discourage smoking or to help smokers quit.

In recent years, more than 40 countries or jurisdictions have introduced labels similar to those created by the FDA. The World Health Organization said in a survey done in countries with graphic labels that a majority of smokers noticed the warnings and more than 25 percent said the warnings led them to consider quitting.

Joining North Carolina-based R.J. Reynolds, owned by Reynolds American Inc., and Lorillard Tobacco, owned by Lorillard Inc., in the lawsuit are Commonwealth Brands Inc., Liggett Group LLC and Santa Fe Natural Tobacco Company Inc.

Richmond, Va.-based Altria Group Inc., parent company of the nation's largest cigarette maker, Philip Morris USA, which makes the top-selling Marlboro brand, is not a part of the lawsuit.

The case is separate from a lawsuit by several of the same tobacco companies over the 2009 Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act, which cleared the way for the more graphic warning labels and other marketing restrictions. The law also allowed the FDA to limit nicotine and banned tobacco companies from sponsoring athletic or social events or giving away free samples or branded merchandise.

In March, a federal appeals court in Cincinnati ruled that the law was constitutional. The contradicting decisions mean the case could be settled by the U.S. Supreme Court on appeal.

Optimistic Romney Says 'Winds of Change' Barreling Toward RNC

HOPKINS, Minn. - Mitt Romney isn't going to let a little rain ruin his parade - into the Republican National Convention, that is.

With Tropical Storm Isaac bearing down on the Caribbean and barreling toward Florida, Romney has remained optimistic when peppered with questions about the impending storm, adding that Floridians are simply feeling the "winds of change."

Asked during an interview with CBS Denver affiliate KCNC-TV whether he is worried that his presumptive nomination next week in Tampa might be upstaged by Isaac, Romney said, laughing, "That weather's always an issue this time of year along the Gulf Coast, but ? I'm expecting we're going to get there just fine."

"There may be some wind, a little rain," he said. "But the winds of change are coming, so we're looking forward to it."

Romney spoke to GOP Florida Gov. Rick Scott by phone Thursday and discussed the weather forecast, according to an aide. In another interview with Fox Business, Romney said he felt "pretty good" about his odds of getting to Tampa.

"Any plans for Tampa depend on the airports being open, able to receive all the delegates and people like myself," he said. "We need to get there. But I feel pretty good that we'll be in Tampa and we'll have a great convention."

NFL preseason: Jake Locker, Joe Flacco shine; Kevin Kolb rises?

What we learned from watching Thursday night's Week 3 NFL preseason action, leading off with passers under the spotlight in Nashville:

Jake looks comfortable; Cardinals still unsettled

The Tennessee Titans felt good about their starting quarterback decision, but the Arizona Cardinals continue to have an uneasy feeling about the choice they have yet to make.

Jake Locker, the Titans' first-round draft pick last year, didn't disappoint in his first game since getting the nod as the No. 1 QB. He displayed the arm and athleticism the team loves. Locker (11-for-20, 134 yards passing, two touchdowns) could have been more accurate?some of his throws sailed high?but otherwise he starred in front of the home crowd.

Locker was locked into his best receivers even without Kenny Britt, throwing short TD passes to wideouts Nate Washington and Kendall Wright. It's clear Locker has developed good chemistry with Wright, the Titans' 2012 first-round pick. It helps that he's also supported by Chris Johnson's running and a strong offensive line.

On the other hand, the Cardinals' competing quarterbacks, John Skelton and Kevin Kolb, continue to get little help up front. Left tackle D.J. Young, thrust into the lineup to replace injured Levi Brown (torn triceps), struggled mightily, and the interior line also consistently succumbed to the Titans' pressure.

Skelton didn't do much with his short first-half stint (4-for-10, 41 yards, interception), opening the door for the resilient Kolb. The good news for the Cards is that Kolb looked comfortable and had his healthiest, most efficient game (17-for-22, 156 yards, TD) of the preseason. On the downside, he also threw a pair of bad interceptions.

Kolb had nowhere to go but up and probably did enough to move into a dead heat with Skelton. The hard truth, however, is the Cardinals aren't a playoff team with either quarterback starting in 2012.

Packers run with Benson

Although quarterback Aaron Rodgers was the most productive Green Bay rusher (six carries, 52 yards, two TDs) in a 27-13 win over the Cincinnati Bengals, the team had to be pleased by the debut of former Bengal Cedric Benson.

The recent free-agent addition (6 carries, 38 yards) looks well-equipped to handle being a complementary power runner to Rodgers and the Pack's high-flying passing attack. That may signal the end in Green Bay for banged-up former starter James Starks.

Another Packer offensive player in trouble is Rodgers' backup, Graham Harrell. After having a dismal game against Cleveland, Harrell completed only five of 12 attempts for 26 yards against Cincinnati and also lost a fumble. It will be interesting to see if team officials start looking for outside help at No. 2.

Raves for Ravens' Flacco

Joe Flacco is out to prove he belongs among the NFL's select quarterbacks this season and earn a lucrative long-term extension in the process. He was razor- sharp in Baltimore's dress rehearsal, cutting through the Jacksonville Jaguars' defense (27-for-36, 266 yards, two TDs, INT) while spreading the ball around in an up-tempo passing game.

Flacco and emerging second-year speed receiver Torrey Smith (8 catches, 103 yards) are picking up where they left off in the AFC Championship game in putting more pop in the Ravens' offense. The result Thursday was a 48-17 romp.
