Giants beat Reds 6-4, win NLDS on Posey's slam

CINCINNATI (AP) ? Not just any comeback would get San Francisco back to playing for a pennant. It would take one of Giant proportions.

And Buster Posey believed it could happen. Even after the Giants left the West Coast down two games, the National League batting champion insisted his team could pull it off, despite the long odds.

With one swing, he got everyone else believing it, too.

Posey hit the third grand slam in Giants' postseason history on Thursday, and San Francisco pulled off an unprecedented revival, moving into the championship series with a 6-4 victory over the Cincinnati Reds.

"You don't want to be in a lose-and-you're-out scenario," reliever Jeremy Affeldt said, wearing a brace on his left wrist so he didn't hurt it in the champagne-flavored clubhouse celebration. "We've been in that situation for three days. We're probably going to sleep well tonight."

They'll play either Washington or St. Louis for the NL pennant, Sunday, not caring at all who they face.

"We could go up against anybody at any time," shortstop Brandon Crawford said. "Being down 2-0 and coming back and winning three at their place, it's an unbelievable feeling."

Game 1 of the NL championship series will be Sunday, either in Washington against the Nationals or in San Francisco vs. the Cardinals. In the meantime, the Giants will stay in Cincinnati until their next opponent is determined Friday night when the Cards and Nats play Game 5.

The Giants became the first NL team to overcome a 2-0 deficit in the division series, which began in 1995. Major League Baseball's changed playoff format this season allowed them to become the first to take a best-of-five by winning the last three on the road.

Posey's second career grand slam off Mat Latos put the Giants up 6-0 in the fifth and sparked a joyous scrum in the San Francisco dugout. The ball smacked off the front of the upper deck in left field, just above Latos' name on the video board.

For the first time in the series, the Giants could exhale.

"I don't think anybody gave up," Posey said.

Will Clark, in the 1989 NLCS, and Chuck Hiller, in the 1962 World Series, hit the other Giants slams in the postseason.

Matt Cain and the bullpen held on, with more help from Posey. The All-Star catcher threw out Jay Bruce at third base to snuff out a sixth-inning rally that cut it to 6-3. The Giants had a pair of diving catches that preserved the lead in the eighth.

There was more drama in the ninth. Ryan Ludwick singled home a run off Sergio Romo. With two runners aboard, Romo fanned Scott Rolen to end it.

The Giants raised their arms, hugged and huddled by the side of the mound, bouncing in unison.

"It was a spectacular moment," outfielder Hunter Pence said.

In Cincinnati, the home-field meltdown had a sickeningly familiar feeling. The Reds haven't won a home playoff game in 17 years. After taking the first two on the West Coast, all they needed was one more at home, where they hadn't dropped three straight all season.

"You get tired of the disappointments, but then you get over it," manager Dusty Baker said. "It hurts big-time."

Once Posey connected, the Reds were the ones facing a steep comeback. They've never overcome a six-run deficit in the playoffs, according to STATS LLC.

Couldn't do it this time, either.

"Buster Posey's swing was a series-changer," said Reds star Joey Votto, standing on second base when the game ended. "That made it very difficult to come back. You know they're going to throw the kitchen sink at us."

The Giants never trailed in any of their three postseason series when they won it all in 2010. They beat the Braves 3-1 in the division series, knocked out the Phillies 4-2 for the NL title, then took four of five from Texas for their sixth World Series title and their first since they moved from New York to San Francisco in 1958.

They really had to scramble this season to get another shot at it.

The bullpen took a huge hit when closer Brian Wilson blew out his elbow, and that was just the start. All-Star game MVP Melky Cabrera got a 50-game suspension in August after a positive testosterone test, taking a .346 hitter out of their lineup. The Giants have decided not to bring him back, even though he's eligible to return for the NL championship series.

Two-time Cy Young winner Tim Lincecum pitched so poorly ? 15 losses ? that he got relegated to the bullpen for the division series.

And don't forget that Posey was coming off a broken leg that wiped out most of his 2011 season, making a great comeback of his own.

"Unreal," Romo said, with champagne dripping off his scraggly beard. "That guy's definitely the MVP of our team. We believe he's the MVP of the league. We wouldn't be here without him, that's for dang sure. He's the one that's been the face of the team all season long. What a great story with all he's been through last year."

The Reds won't forget the first inning of the series, when everything changed. Ace Johnny Cueto pulled muscles in his right side and had to leave the game. He wound up getting dropped from the playoff roster because of the injury.

Latos pulled them through that opening game, pitching in relief on short rest for a 5-2 win. Latos came to Cincinnati from the Padres at a high price ? pitcher Edinson Volquez and three former high draft picks ? and with a clear purpose in the offseason. He was expected to take them to the next level.

The right-hander allowed three hits through the first four innings, then fell apart in the fifth. Crawford had an RBI triple and scored on rookie shortstop Zack Cozart's error. A four-pitch walk and a single loaded the bases for Posey.

As soon as he connected, Reds catcher Ryan Hanigan stood and turned away, unable to watch the ball head for the seats.

Cincinnati's 17-year history of playoff futility was about to go on.

NOTES: Posey's other career grand slam came on July 7, 2010 at Milwaukee. ... The Reds are 3-3 in winner-take-all playoff games, including 1-2 in best-of-five series and 2-1 in best-of-seven series. .. Teams that lose the first two games in a best-of-five series are 7-59 all-time. ... Cain gave up six hits and three runs in 6 2-3 innings, the longest appearance by a Giants starter during the series.

A glance at the Nobel Prize for literature

WHO WON?

Chinese author Mo Yan, 57.

FOR WHAT?

The Swedish Academy, which selects the winners, praised Mo's "hallucinatory realism," saying it "merges folk tales, history and the contemporary."

NOTABLE WORKS

"Red Sorghum"; "The Garlic Ballads"; "Big Breasts & Wide Hips"; "Frogs."

LITERARY IMPACT

Mo writes of visceral pleasures and existential quandaries, creating vivid characters. His early work stuck to a straightforward narrative structure enlivened by vivid descriptions and raunchy humor. In recent years, Mo has become more experimental, toying with different narrators and embracing a freewheeling style often described as "Chinese magical realism."

WHAT DID HE SAY?

"China has a lot of great writers. I know that in my heart ... I am very fortunate to have won this prize but I am quite clear. I know that the most important thing for an author is the work they produce ... I'll continue on the path I've been taking, feet on the ground, describing people's lives, describing people's emotions, writing from the standpoint of the ordinary people."

(AP) ? A freshman congressman running for re-election on a pro-life platform urged his pregnant mistress to get an abortion a decade ago, according to a transcript of the recorded conversation.

The undated phone recording appears to have been made before Republican Rep. Scott DesJarlais' divorce from his wife, Susan, was finalized in 2001. According to the transcript, DesJarlais tells the unidentified woman that he is concerned that she hadn't taken steps toward terminating the pregnancy.

"You told me you'd have an abortion, and now we're getting too far along without one," DesJarlais is quoted as saying. "If we need to go to Atlanta, or whatever, to get this solved and get it over with so we can get on with our lives, then let's do it."

DesJarlais on his website espouses a platform that opposes abortion, saying: "All life should be cherished and protected. We are pro-life."

The DesJarlais campaign did not dispute the contents of the transcript first reported by the Huffington Post, but condemned the circulation of "desperate personal attacks."

"This is old news from the last election cycle that Tennesseans have already widely rejected," spokesman Robert Jameson said in an email.

"Since the congressman's opponents cannot attack him on his independent, conservative and pro-life record in Congress they have once again resorted to pure character assassination," he said.

DesJarlais, a Jasper physician, defeated Democratic Rep. Lincoln Davis in 2010. Davis said his campaign was aware of the transcript during that race, but he wasn't able to confirm its authenticity until a recent conversation with DesJarlais' ex-wife.

"She said it was true, and she said, 'He made the recording himself and let me listen to it,'" Davis said in a phone interview. "She even went further to say that the woman who supposedly was the participant in the conversation said in (legal proceedings) that she did have an abortion."

The transcript is part of a 200-page memorandum of court records detailing DesJarlais' divorce. The author of the report is not listed.

DesJarlais faces Democratic state Sen. Eric Stewart this year.

Stewart said at a press conference Wednesday that DesJarlais "doesn't deny that as a medical doctor he had an affair with a patient, got that patient pregnant and then begged and pleaded with her to terminate the pregnancy."

"Scott DesJarlais has proven over and over again that he cannot be trusted and this latest revelation is absolutely disqualifying," Stewart said.

It's not the first time DesJarlais' marital problems have surfaced. The Davis campaign in 2010 ran ads highlighting allegations from court records that said DesJarlais intimidated his ex-wife with a gun, and in one instance put it in his mouth for three hours. The judge who granted the divorce in 2001 criticized the conduct of both the husband and wife.

In the newly surfaced transcript, DesJarlais refers to the toll the marital issues had been taking on him.

"I've been going crazy," he said. "I mean, if Susan could talk to you she'd tell you that I've been psychotic for months over this."

He said he wasn't sleeping at night, adding, "I mean, it's like I'm trying to build my family back together just waiting for it to fall apart, and it's been eating me apart."

DesJarlais appears to blame the woman for becoming pregnant.

"You lied to me about something that caused us to be in this situation, and that's not my fault, that's yours," he said.

The woman retorts: "Well, it's your fault for sleeping with your patient."

Exercise and Learning To Pace Yourself - The CalorieKing Blog

Many of you know that I?m on the healthy living journey right along with you. I was hit with a brain tumor a few years ago that has changed me fundamentally ? and one of those things is my weight and exercise.

I used to be about 30 pounds lighter and loved getting out on a hike with the dog. But due to medication and lack of exercise due to pain, I?ve packed on the pounds and I?d love to get rid of them. That?s really an understatement?I?d love to blast that weight to oblivion.

So how do you get back into exercise when you?ve had a break from it, are dealing with a chronic condition? or perhaps starting out?

Walking Slowly Towards My Goal

I'm learning to walk slowly towards my exercise goals!

My strategy has been to take the days I?m feeling better and get out an exercise until I?m drenched with sweat. I feel great thinking that this exercise is going to surely tackle the problem. Then the next day comes ? and I feel awful and in pain. It?s a classic case of having over done it and the result is that I don?t exercise again for days.

Clearly this approach is an example of how NOT to go about exercising. This constant up and down cycle can be hard to break out from and unnecessarily hard on your body.

So what?s and all or nothing type like myself to do?

Learning to Pace Yourself

The latest research from pain management and occupational therapists recommends taking a step back, evaluating your limits and learning to pace yourself.

What does pacing mean? It is defined as a way of regulating how much you do at any one time and gradually and systematically increasing it over time.

If you are like me and take those good days and overdo, it means learning to take a step back and really evaluating your exercise and its effects on you. If you?ve exercised to the point you can?t do it again the next day that?s not a positive.

If you reflect on your goals and remember your exercise if to achieve healthy living, not causing yourself harm just to say you?ve gotten your exercise in.

The first step is consulting with your doctor or health care professional about your overall health. They can determine whether you are ready for exercise and then may suggest a specific exercise based on your physical fitness ? perhaps swimming may be better for you than walking. Or cut back on the aerobics and try tai chi instead.

Once you determine your level of physical fitness you can get started. When you start doing your exercise keep an eye on the time it takes for you to start feeling like you?re pushing a little too far. Stop there and the next time you exercise aim for a time lower than that as your baseline to start working out at a moderate pace.

Just like with your food, keeping a diary of your exercise is key when you are just starting out or have a condition where you need to be careful of your activity. Say you are starting with a simple 10 minute walk since anything more than that leaves you breathless; take that time and record it as you repeat it each day. Then gradually step up the time to 13, 14 or 15 minutes ? whatever is your next level of tolerance.

Is This Enough?

My first inclination was to think that only 10 minutes of walking a day was never going to help me lose weight. Then my pacing coach reminded me again it is about you staying healthy ? if you overdo you end up not exercising at all and that?s not healthy. When you are in that cycle of not exercising it can become even harder and more painful to get started again so you?ve taken a step backwards.

We all know the recommendation of getting 30 minutes of exercise per day to maintain a healthy life. The point of pacing is to set yourself up to achieve that goal ?and while it may be slower, you will still be active and heading in the right direction instead of doing nothing at all.

Changing Habits is Hard

Frankly, learning to pace myself is hard. I want to prove myself and I want to reach my goals. It has required a fundamental change in my thinking that ?more is better.? Instead it has become ?slow and steady wins the race.?

You can trust me when I say I understand changing habits is hard. This has been one of my biggest challenges to date ? learning to do less, but to do it consistently until I improve.

I hope those of you out there who have a medical condition or who simply need to start from scratch will join me in pacing exercise ? little bits at a time and logging as I go so I can see my progress.

It may take a little longer, but with pacing I?ll safely reach that goal of 30 minutes per day.

Resources

I found reading articles on pacing helpful ? it made me realize I?m not the only one that might push myself too hard getting started exercising again. While the following articles tend to deal with specific problems such as those living with fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue, the principles of pacing they teach are still the same. I found them valuable and I hope you do too!

Where can I find a good recording system for game consoles?

Hello once again, it's Thergox with another screen recording question. Lately I've been hunting down a proper screen recording system for game consoles -- because the ghetto look of a big TV screen at an angle isn't exactly appealing. I am not concerned about computer-central games (Computer referring directly to the Macintosh and PC) -- it is things like the Wii, Xbox, and the PS3 that I am looking to record. Things like Dazzle or EasyCap won't fit -- I am told they are not very good at what they are meant to do. Things more like AVERMEDIA, just a little more in a cheaper price range. Please tell me what you know.

Thank you, Thergox.

(AP) ? Plagued by uncertainty and fresh setbacks, the world economy has weakened further and will grow more slowly over the next year, the International Monetary Fund says in its latest forecast.

Advanced economies are risking recession, the international lending organization said in a quarterly update of its World Economic Outlook, and the malaise is spreading to more dynamic emerging economies such as China.

The IMF forecasts that the world economy will expand 3.3 percent this year, down from the estimate of 3.5 percent growth it issued in July. Its forecast for growth in 2013 is 3.6 percent, down from 3.9 percent three months ago and 4.1 percent in April.

Underpinning that bleaker scenario are the assumptions that Europe will continue to ease monetary policy and that the U.S. will avert a crushing blow to growth by fending off a so-called "fiscal cliff" that could result from a failure to reach a compromise on its budget law and tax cuts.

Conditions could worsen if the United States doesn't deal with its budget crisis soon, the IMF said.

"Downside risks have increased and are considerable," the fund said. It said its forecasts are based "on critical policy action in the euro area and the United States, and it is very difficult to estimate the probability that this action will materialize."

The IMF has urged the U.S. to raise the ceiling on the level of debt the government can issue, which is capped by law. In August 2011, a battle between the Obama administration and Congress over raising the limit wasn't resolved until the U.S. almost defaulted on its debt.

Global efforts to ease credit and increase the amount of money available for lending are helping, but appear to be yielding diminishing returns, as are fiscal stimulus policies, the IMF warned.

"Because uncertainty is high, confidence is low, and financial sectors are weak, the significant fiscal achievements have been accompanied by disappointing growth or recessions," it said.

Among other things, it says governments need to do more to relieve the burden of household debt that is constraining spending power and thus crippling demand.

While large corporations pay record low rates for credit, households and small companies struggle to obtain bank loans, it said.

Fortifying domestic demand is all the more crucial given weakening trade trends. The IMF forecasts that growth in world trade volume will slump to 3.2 percent this year from 5.8 percent last year and 12.6 percent in 2010.

"Low growth and uncertainty in advanced economies are affecting emerging market and developing economies through both trade and financial channels, adding to homegrown weaknesses," the IMF's chief economist, Olivier Blanchard, said in a statement.

But he told reporters Tuesday a more optimistic scenario was possible if the right measures are taken, such as fixing banks in European countries and reducing the uncertainty about U.S. policies.

"The case for an upside scenario is stronger than it has been," he said at the opening of the IMF meeting in Tokyo.

He noted some positive signs in the U.S. economy such as a turnaround in the housing market. The IMF also sees the slowdown in China as part of a shift from the past double-digit growth to a rate that is "sustainable," a process he described as "a soft landing." And the slowdown in developed nations had pushed down exports, the key factor behind the slowdown in China, Blanchard and other IMF officials said.

The IMF raised the U.S. growth forecast slightly, to 2.2 percent this year from 2 percent in July. For 2013, though, it expects U.S. growth of 2.1 percent, down from 2.3 percent.

Among the 17 nations that use the euro, low growth in the major "core economies," such as Germany and France, will be offset by outright contractions in the smaller economies, leading real gross domestic product to fall by about 0.4 percent in 2012, the IMF said.

It forecasts growth in the euro area will stay flat in the first half of 2013 and tick up to about 1 percent in the second half of the year, the IMF said.

The report was released just ahead of the World Bank-IMF annual meeting, which is being held in Tokyo this week. The gathering of some 10,000 bankers, executives and officials will likely refocus attention on Japan's failure to escape its own economic slump two decades after its own financial implosion in the early 1990s.

The IMF said it expects growth in Japan to hit 2.2 percent this year but to slacken further as reconstruction from the March 2011 disasters winds down, falling to 1.2 percent in 2013.

Japan, whose population is both shrinking and aging faster than elsewhere, is confronting problems of high debt and stagnation, it said.

As usual, the bright spots are developing economies that were less affected by the global financial crisis, where rising employment and strong demand will help support growth, the IMF said.

China's economy will likely expand 7.8 percent this year, down from July's 8 percent forecast, though a pickup in construction projects is expected to spur growth late in the year. India's economy will grow 4.9 percent, down from 6.1 percent. And Brazil's growth will be only 1.5 percent, compared to 2.5 percent.

The IMF advised policymakers to devise stronger medium-term fiscal and structural reforms to shore up confidence in the growth potential of the advanced economies.

Only then, will investor confidence in markets and public debt be restored.

"Unless governments spell out how they intend to effect the necessary adjustment over the medium term, a cloud of uncertainty will continue to hang over the international economy, with downside risks for output and employment in the short term," it said.

How to Cook with Tofu | Healthy Tofu Recipes

Tofu used to scare me, but now we?re quite comfortable with each other. I pick up a package once a month or so to add as a nice meat-free protein source to my favorite recipes. I find it works best in dishes with very high flavor profiles, such as sweet and spicy pad thai, since tofu lacks much taste on its own but absorbs seasonings well.

Though tofu can be tricky to master at first, once you get the hang of it it can prove quite useful as an alternative and cost-friendly meat alternative in your diet.

Health benefits: Tofu is a bean curd that?s made by adding mineral salt, such as calcium sulfate, and water to a soybean ?mash.? The salt makes the protein and fiber in the soy turn thick and smooth, and it?s then pressed in to a block for packaging. Tofu is a great and cheap source of calcium and vitamin E and is very rich in protein. One half-cup serving contains nearly 10 grams.

Tofu also boasts such benefits as lowering bad cholesterol, alleviating symptoms of menopause, and even lowering risk of cancer when eaten regularly.?

Nutritional statistics:?One-half cup of firm tofu contains approximately 88 calories, 5 grams of fat, 2 grams of carbohydrates, 1 gram of fiber, 1 gram of sugar and 10 grams of protein.

Cooking methods: There are an abundance of ways to prepare tofu, some more simple than others. Check out this great guide that includes several preparation methods, as well as a few healthy recipe ideas.

For a good starting place, know that tofu comes in water and if you don?t drain it, it turns out rather soggy. You can either invest in a tofu press or you simply place the tofu between several layers of paper towels or kitchen towels and apply pressure to the top with either a heavy skillet or a stack of books. Just make sure you have a protective layer between the two ? such as a cookie sheet ? to avoid dampening or ruining your weight source.

It?s also helpful to know that tofu comes in hard and soft varieties. Soft tofu has a thick and creamy texture that makes it great for salad dressings, desserts, smoothies and puddings. And hard tofu has a firmer consistency, making it better suited for dishes where it will retain its shape, such as pastas and stir fries.

Once you?ve properly prepped your hard or soft tofu, you can season and grill it, turn it into a tofu ?scramble,? bake it, roast it, add it to a smoothie, or even turn it into a dessert such as a chilled pie or tart. Check out these recipes below for a good place to start. Then, dream up your own concoctions with this delicious and healthy ingredient.

Paralympian Petitclerc named Canada?s chef de mission for Commonwealth Games

Chantal Petitclerc has been named Canada?s chef de mission at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in a move she said shows the major support for Paralympic sport in this country.

?As far as we know, it is the first time for a Paralympic athlete to be chef de mission in a multisport Games,? Petitclerc said Saturday.

?I think it sends a really good message about Canada, that we trust that a Paralympic athlete can represent all athletes and not just Paralympic athletes. I thinks that?s very positive, and I?m quite proud of that.?

The 42-year-old is one of Canada?s most decorated athletes. She holds world records over three different wheelchair distances, and has raced to 21 Paralympic medals including 14 gold.

She captured five golds at both the 2004 Paralympics in Athens and 2008 Games in Beijing.

Petitclerc has a special connection to the Commonwealth Games, carrying Canada?s flag into the stadium for the opening ceremonies in 2006 in Melbourne, Australia.

?The Commonwealth Games have always paved the route in terms of inclusion, they were the very first to have full medal status for Paralympic events in 2002 with wheelchair racing, and in Glasgow it will be the biggest ever number of Para sport events with 22 medal events,? Petitclerc said.

?They are a model to follow in terms of inclusion and so I?m even happier to be a part of that.?

Petitclerc won gold over 800 metres in both the 2002 and 2006 Commonwealth Games.

?There are so many reasons to be thrilled with Chantal?s appointment,? Andrew Pipe, the president of Commonwealth Games Canada, said in a statement. ?A former flag bearer, multiple medallist, and someone with a deep appreciation for the athlete experience at the highest levels of international competition.?

Petitclerc follows in the footsteps of a couple of other Canadian sporting stars who?ve acted as chef de mission. Speedskater Nathalie Lambert had the role for the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, cyclist Curt Harnett was Canada?s chef at the Pan American Games last year, while swimmer Mark Tewksbury had the job at the London Olympics this past summer.

?I think athletes do have a lot to offer when they do retire and that?s one of the places that we can give back to our sport because we?ve been there. We know what it takes, and we know how it is to be an athlete on a team,? Petitclerc said.

?One of my motivations is that I know that the hard work is done by the athlete and their coaches, but I also know that a good positive organized dynamic constructive team can make a difference between a good and a great performance and experience.?

Petitclerc was a coach with the United Kingdom team at the London Paralympics, but moved home to Montreal when her contract expired following the Games. Her first major task in her new job will be a site visit in February.

The Glasgow Commonwealth Games in July of 2014 will feature 17 sports over 11 days of competition.

Canada was fourth in total medals at the 2010 Games in New Delhi, India.
