Winners, losers from MLS semis

Never mind the spin and the overly spun ? here?s who had a good and bad weekend as the MLS conference semifinal first legs played out over four cities over the weekend:

WINNERS

MLS Cup host hopes for Real Salt Lake, Seattle and Los Angeles: San Jose still has the inside track, of course. But when Houston seized control of its home-and-away series against top Eastern seed Sporting Kansas City, hope began to float for these three Western Conference hopefuls. Previously, even if they had gotten past San Jose (the top Western seed), the conventional wisdom said the big 2012 decider date would go to Kansas City. Now?hmmmmm.

Real Salt Lake goalkeeper Nick Rimando: I?m not quite sure it was quite what it?s been made out to be. The tendency to make the present more historically significant than it really is will always be a powerful force. Still, he was exceptional against Seattle, doing so much heavy lifting in his team?s 0-0 draw.

Every center back on the field in Houston: Sporting Kansas City?s Matt Besler was best of all, but central partner Aurelien Collin (who won everything falling his way in the air), along with Houston?s Bobby Boswell and Jermaine Taylor, all had strong matches. Collin did have one bad moment, getting turned on the home team?s second goal. (And Taylor had to leave, injured, so his day was ultimately undone by misfortune.)

RSL center back depth: Speaking of strong performances along the back line, Kwame Watson-Siriboe is RSL?s fourth choice. But you sure couldn?t tell it from the performance he put in Friday against Seattle.

Dominic Kinnear: The Dynamo manager won two playoff games; his spiffy post-season record now stands at 12-7-4.

LOSERS

Anyone who likes scoring:?Four matches, five goals. Blek!

Three home teams that couldn?t get it done: Neither D.C. United nor Seattle could exploit their initial home field advantage. The idea is to win at home, which doesn?t just provide the obvious, numerical edge in goals. It also shifts more of the second-leg pressure over to the other guys. Win at home and you just need a draw on the road ? and the other fellows know it. Well, D.C. United and Seattle may be sitting pretty next to the Galaxy, who can win by a goal at San Jose and not be assured of advancing. Houston?s win at home meant the hosts were 1-1-2 during the weekend.

Logic: Yes, logic. Because I keep hearing about how a failure to win at home in these first legs wasn?t so bad. No, it?s not grim disaster wrapped in imminent doom, but it?s certainly not ideal, now is it? Bottom line here, three of four home teams failed to score a goal at home (no matter how hot a certain goalkeeper was). That spells ?opportunity lost? in my book.

Landon Donovan: He keeps telling us that he feels older than 30. Now he?s starting to look the part, too. Not only in Sunday?s loss to San Jose, but in the win over Vancouver, Donovan seemed to be missing some his old zip and zoom. He needs to deliver big in Wednesday?s return leg in Northern California.

Andy Najar: Whether you believe the young D.C. United right back?s story, that he wasn?t really throwing the ball at referee Jair Marrufo is really beside the point. It was a silly, silly thing to do. It hurt his team, not just Saturday, but in Wednesday?s return leg, too.

AND SOME ?TIES?

Goalkeepers: Rimando, Seattle?s Michael Gspurning and New York?s Luis Robles, held up their end, but gaffes by Los Angeles? Josh Saunders and D.C. United?s Bill Hamid split the decision here. (San Jose?s Jon Busch and Houston?s Tally Hall were fine, even if neither were too busy.)

MLS attendance: We talked about this one here.

I think I fall in love with this roleplay at first glance. May I reserve the Werewolf prince? This sounds so amazing that I cannot help but gasp out loud. Also, I see the first part of the password is "Garden" but no matter how hard I find, I cannot seem to find the second part of the password

I replied, Stitchy, and added her in as the Ghost Princess - it was the best I could do!

Hello, Death. May I call you Death? Well, Death, as you see just before the character listing, there is a tumblr page. If you click on there, you may find the second part of the password :)

Oh, right.... I think I see that but I am not too sure... I am used to the fact that most passwords remains in the introduction only. Alright, the second part is Center so Garden Center... And of course you may call me Death... Most people just call me Black but Death is actually a cooler name...

I'm Dee. Haiiii :D And well done, you found it! Your reservation has been put up :)

Before reserving their character, and making said character, I need people to read over the tumblr page consisting of character information. So, I put the password in there, hoping it gets people to read it!

I like Death, better than Black. Black just sounds racist o.O

Nope, this one was just me, to be honest, haha. She didn't like the idea of an Asylum RP but she was lured in ;D

Hello dear, nice to see you here. But, I have a couple of things to say if you're going to join. Number one; you need to be active. You were inactive for quite a while in Arcana, and if you're going to take on two major characters like those, you need to be around all of the time. Two, you need to stay in one tense through your posts. You tend to dart between present and past tense, but you need to stick to past. If you think you can do this, and keep up with the two characters, I'll put your reservation up.

Greetings, Dee... It is a pleasure to meet you. I am dying to join a literate roleplay. However, I have one question. You said on the introduction page, above the character skeleton that

To be completed in first person, please!

What do you mean by that? I can understand that I will need to write in that way in

' -Why were you placed into the Asylum?
-What do you think about being in the Asylum?
- What race do you think could have caused you to become ill?
- What power do you have left?
- What do you miss most about being in your true form?
-Likes:
-Dislikes:
-Fears'

But how do one write personality or history in first person?

User avatar

Pop into my Arcana Academy if you like literate roleplays :) everyone who has commented on the ooc so far is in that one too, and we're looking for more male characters.

Anyway, back to this one!

For the personality and the history, it's pretty much the same as the rest of it. An expanse for personality; Some people say that I'm kind, but that's only one side of me. There's so much more underneath the facade I put on. I'm not all that kind, not by a long shot. I'm actually quite mean; don't be mistaken by my cheerful smile or my soft voice - I'm a bitch in disguise.

And the same for the history; I was born on the twenty fourth of August, a sunny and bright day to a caring mother and devoted father. My childhood was the best you could have imagined; growing up the only child meant that I was spoilt rotten...

Writing it all in first person gives you a good chance to get into the mind of your character, I think. Enough so that you are fully prepared to play them :)

Edit; thank you, Chaos. Your word means a lot. Those characters are reserved for you!

Understood, I shall write like that. As for Arcana Academy, well, I'd love to join it but unfortunately, I am afraid that I cannot catch up with it since it already has too many posts, information, relationships between characters...etc. Therefore, I want to start anew so here I am, wanting to join this roleplay.

It's actually just been restarted, and a lot of the old characters/previous posts have little to do with the role play now but no worries :) I hope you enjoy this one!

NZealand beaching proves rarest of whales exists

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) ? The spade-toothed beaked whale is so rare that nobody has seen one alive, but scientists have proof the species still exists.

Two skeletons were identified as belonging to the species after a 17-foot whale and her calf beached themselves in New Zealand in 2010. Scientists hope the discovery will provide insights into the species and into ocean ecosystems.

It was almost a missed opportunity, however, since conservation workers misidentified the carcasses as a much more common type of whale and buried them.

In a paper published Tuesday in the journal "Current Biology," researchers from New Zealand and the United States say of their discovery: "For the first time we have a description of the world's rarest and perhaps most enigmatic marine mammal."

Previously only three skull fragments of the species had been found: in New Zealand in 1872 and in the 1950s and the last one 26 years ago on an island off Chile. The males have broad blade-like tusk teeth that give the species its name. Both males and females have beaks which make them resemble dolphins.

"This is pretty fantastic," said Ewan Fordyce, a geology professor at the University of Otago who specializes in the evolution of whales and who was not involved in the research. "There would be few, if any, mammalian species in the world that would be rarer. And we know much more about panda bears and other iconic, rare animals."

The beached whales, an adult and her 11-foot male calf, were discovered on Opape Beach on the North Island on New Year's Eve in 2010. Conservation workers thought they were Gray's beaked whales and took tissue samples before burying them about nine feet under the sand.

Those samples ended up at the University of Auckland where scientists did routine tests about six months later. Rochelle Constantine, a co-author of the paper, said she and her colleague Kirsten Thompson couldn't believe it when the results showed the pair to be the rarest of whales.

"Kirsten and I went quiet. We were pretty stunned," she said.

Further tests confirmed the discovery. Constantine said they then retested about 160 samples taken from other stranded Gray's whales but didn't find any more that had been misidentified.

This year, researchers returned to the beach to exhume the skeletons.

Anton van Helden, who manages the marine mammals collection for New Zealand's national museum Te Papa, said it wasn't a straightforward task to find the remains after so long and that the mother's skull, which was buried shallower than the rest of the remains, washed out to sea. But they were able to recover the rest of the skeletons.

"It's a hugely significant find," said van Helden, a co-author of the paper.

He said it's impossible to know why the whales came ashore although whales often beach themselves when they become ill. He said almost nothing is known about the species except they live in the South Pacific Ocean and eat primarily squid.

Fordyce said it may be possible to use the skeletons of the rare whales to reconstruct their muscles and tissues and to find out more about how they live and die and why they are so reclusive.

The scientists say the discovery could also provide broader insights into the ocean's complex ecosystems.

"This is good reminder," said Constantine, "of how large the oceans are, and of how little we know about them."

Obama hits final stretch with message of gravitas

President Barack Obama in North Las Vegas, Nevada (Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images)

NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev.--Gone are the jokes about "Romnesia" and the loose talk of a "campaign marathon extravaganza." For Barack Obama, the president of a nation reeling from a storm that devastated the Eastern Seaboard, it's time for gravitas.

Standing in front of a skyline of red mountains not far from the College of Southern Nevada, Obama's election address sounded more like the speeches he delivered when he campaigned for president four years ago. His original message of hope and compromise, subdued by four years of a stubbornly high unemployment rate and partisan gridlock, re-emerged Thursday.

"We don't need a big government agenda or a small government agenda. We need a middle-class agenda," Obama said Thursday, echoing a line he used in his inaugural address in 2008.

While almost all of his speeches before superstorm Sandy were filled with direct mentions of his GOP challenger, the president mentioned Mitt Romney by name only once during the speech. Obama chose instead to refer to Romney as "my opponent," "the governor," or "the guy who's running for president right now." He also sought to reclaim the word "change" as his own, hammering Romney as a president who would return to policies embraced by former President George W. Bush.

"In the closing weeks of this campaign, Gov. Romney's been using all his talents as a salesman to dress up the very same policies that failed our country so badly," Obama said. "With a straight face he's offering them up as change. He's saying he's the candidate of change. Now, let me tell you, Nevada, we know what change looks like. And what the governor's offering sure ain't change."

The speech suggested that Obama was transforming his rally persona from a wise-cracking pol to Commander-in-Chief facing Serious Times.

The crowd, however, was ready to party.

About 4,500 supporters had gathered to hear the president at the outdoor Cheyenne Sports Complex here, grooving to a warm-up funk band beneath the warm desert sun. About an hour before Obama spoke, the band played the gospel worship song "All Around," replacing the parts where the singer usually says "Lord" with "Obama" as the crowd danced and cheered on the grass below the stage.

Eva Longoria, actress and a chairwoman of the Obama campaign, made a stop at the rally to urge supporters to vote, preferably early if they could.

In the background, campaign signs that read "FORWARD!" AND "VOTE EARLY" with the official campaign insignia in place as the "O," bordered the field where the president spoke.

This will be Obama's final trip to the Silver State, which both campaigns believe they have a chance to win. Romney dispatched his running mate, Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan, to speak in Reno on the same day.

Cashless Society: Glo calls for more telecoms involvement in ...

By Babajide Komolafe

Telecoms service provider, Globacom, has called on the Nigerian Government to allow telecommunications companies to participate in the regulation of the mobile money subsector which is the instrument of the new cashless policy of the country.

Speaking at a seminar in Lagos on ?Nigeria Transiting to A Cashless Society: Possibilities and Challenges?, Tunde Kuponiyi, Globacom?s Director, Telebanking Unit?said that the current regime of mobile money regulation, which is being bank-driven, is not friendly to telecoms?companies who provide the mobile payment platform.

Delivering a paper at the seminar on Monday, Kuponiyi said that though there was a lot that telecoms companies could contribute in a cashless economy, their current mandate was limiting.

Kuponiyi explained that since the mobile payments business is ninety percent dependent on the mobile industry, it was unfair that the mobile networks are prevented from advertising their various mobile payment products which are the foundation on which the bank products operate.

?From the customer?s mobile phone, to the mobile payments system and feedback to the mobile phone, the mobile payment transaction utilizes mostly mobile resources, makes use of mobile time and is supported largely by mobile engineers, but unfortunately the CBN has restricted telecom companies from advertising in the mobile payments space?, Kuponiyi said. He advocated that telecom companies must be allowed to speak about the capabilities of their networks, the quality of user experience and the choice of mobile payment services available on their networks.

He lamented that the passive role to which the telecoms companies have been confined has led to the slow growth of the mobile payment sub sector.? ?It is now roughly a year since the first mobile money went live and approaching a year since cashless economy came into operation. Meanwhile, none of the individual players can boast of having more than 10,000 active subscribers?, he stated. Kuponiyi concluded that while the regulation supports leadership by banks, he believed that the rules need to be adjusted to create more room for telecoms companies? involvement so they can do more in support of mobile payments.

?Telecoms companies have large and wide retail networks spanning the farthest reaches of the country that they can make available to scheme operators for mobile money services.

Montenegro rulers set to keep power in election

PODGORICA (Reuters) - Montenegro's ruling party hopes to extend its 23-year hold on power in a parliamentary election that began on Sunday and win a mandate to lead the ex-Yugoslav republic in talks on joining the European Union.

Despite economic stagnation and accusations of high-level corruption, the Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS) remains popular for having championed the independence of the country of 680,000 people six years ago.

Victory for the party could also mean the return to power of its leader, 50-year old Milo Djukanovic, prime minister or president for all but two years in the last two decades.

"They are more experienced and more serious than others and I hope they will bring us prosperity," said retired Dimitrije Mitrovic, 62, who voted for the DPS.

Opinion polls indicate an alliance dominated by the DPS is likely to win 47 percent of the vote compared to 24 percent for its nearest rival, the Democratic Front opposition alliance. Its credentials have been further bolstered by the EU decision to open accession talks in June.

The only question was whether the ruling party would need the support of parliamentary deputies from ethnic minority parties, said Zlatko Vujovic of CEMI, a non-government group that will monitor the ballot.

While the DPS has been riding high in opinion polls, some Montenegrins said it was time for a change.

"They have been in power for 23 years, this is their private fiefdom, this is not the state of Montenegro anymore," office clerk Slavko Zivkovic, 50, an opposition supporter said after casting his ballot at a polling station in a school in downtown Podgorica.

STRUGGLING ECONOMY

Djukanovic's campaign was based on the message that an opposition victory could endanger the independence which Montenegro won in 2006 from much bigger neighbour Serbia. The struggling economy did not really feature in the campaign.

Although the opposition favours closer ties with Serbia, it does not want to reverse independence. It also seeks to bring Montenegro into the European Union, but unlike the ruling party, it is less clear that it would want NATO membership.

Led by Miodrag Lekic, a former Yugoslav ambassador to Rome under late strongman Slobodan Milosevic, the Democratic Front has campaigned largely on an anti-corruption platform.

Djukanovic stepped down as prime minister in 2010, to be replaced by hand-picked successor Igor Luksic, but has remained influential.

Montenegro's economy flourished after Djukanovic led it away from Serbia thanks to booming tourism and foreign investment on the scenic Adriatic coast.

But this year, the economy is forecast to grow by only 0.5 percent, weighed down by the debts of the state-owned aluminium plant as well as the euro zone crisis. Per capita output is 5,200 euros ($6,700), barely one-fifth the EU average.

Polls will close at 1800 GMT, with first results expected several hours later.

Smaller opposition blocs, including the Socialist People's Party and the Positive Montenegro alliance, could play a role in forming a future government if neither of the biggest parties wins enough votes.

After Croatia, due to join next July, Montenegro is the only Balkan state that could become an EU member by the end of this decade.
