U.S. Senate candidate Tammy Baldwin speaks to supporters in Wisconsin (Reuters)Wisconsin Democrat Rep. Tammy Baldwin has been named the projected winner in her race against Republican Tommy Thompson. Baldwin's victory makes her the first openly gay candidate elected to the U.S. Senate.
"Tammy Baldwin's victory showed what a majority of Americans already know: that candidates should be judged on their qualifications for the job and not their sexual orientation," said Herndon Graddick, president of the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD).
In a recent interview with the Guardian, Baldwin said, "If you are not in the room, the conversation is about you. If you are in the room, the conversation is with you."
She continued: "We never had an openly LGBT member of the U.S. Senate, and even though there are strong pro-equality allies who serve there, it has always been a conversation about a group of people. So this changes everything."
Though the votes are still being counted, several news outlets including Reuters and Fox News have called the race for Baldwin. It was the most-expensive U.S. Senate race in Wisconsin history, with both campaigns spending an estimated $65 million, according to Reuters.
But even with some news outlets calling the race for Baldwin, the candidate's Twitter account encouraged voters to stay in line at their polling stations.
And despite Baldwin's historic win, her sexuality was not a leading issue in the race, according to the Washington Post and Slate.
"I take that as a good sign," voter Kelly Webber told the Post. "Maybe we're just moving past all that."
Still, it's worth noting that her election appears to be a historic change in the Badger State. As recently as 2006, all but one Wisconsin county voted in favor of a ballot measure to ban same sex marriage.
The "Tammy and Tommy" race, as it was referred to locally, remained close throughout but a final poll heading into Election Day showed Baldwin with a slight edge.
"Tonight Tammy shattered a glass ceiling that has existed for more than two centuries, and we could not be more thrilled," said Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund President Chuck Wolfe.

(Reuters) - U.S. states that have a monopoly over their liquor sales seem to charge slightly more for alcohol than states without such control, the so-called "license states," according to a U.S. study.
As of February 2012, 18 control states in the United States set the price of liquor sold to their retail stores, and 13 of those also set the price for the general public. The other states sell liquor licenses to private business owners, who set their own prices.
"We found that the average price of liquor is lower in license states. It was on average $2 lower per product, which is a 7 percent difference," said lead author Michael Siegel, a researcher from the Boston University School of Public Health.
Generally, in states and area that have considered putting control of liquor prices in the hands of private businesses, the public has supported privatization.
But the researchers note that while control states tend to charge slightly more for liquor, they also make a lot more money from their liquor sales.
"When legislators look at privatization, they just don't know how they're going to make up the money," said William Kerr, of the Public Health Institute's Alcohol Research Group in Emeryville, California, who was not involved with the research.
The study, which appeared in the journal Addiction, compared the prices of 74 popular liquor brands in the 13 retail control states and 50 private stores in license states, finding that the prices varied by brand.
But not all liquor prices were more expensive in control states. The researchers found that 21 brands were, on average, more expensive in license states.
Siegel told Reuters Health that the average price difference between control and license states may be enough to influence how much people drink.
"There is convincing evidence in the literature that control states have lower alcohol consumption than the license states," he said.
He and his colleagues also wrote that control states have been found to have lower rates of heavy drinking and underage alcohol-related deaths. But that may be due to other reasons, such as access to alcohol and law enforcement.
Past research has found that license states tend to have more liquor stores in one area, which the researchers say would be expected to drive down prices.
Control states may also have higher prices because they have costs that aren't paid for by license fees or liquor sales taxes - both of which are collected by license states.

Dear Ne-Yo
Oh Ne-Yo you have just never been right with me. I remember listening to your CDs and just wanting you to break out of your Michael Jackson copycat mode. I wanted you to test your talents. I think you are a rather talented dude but you seem to be OK with being stuck in a very boring lane.
So I was really not checking for you or this new CD. Honestly, Ne-Yo I didn?t even know you had a new CD coming out and what does that say?
But you know I held out hope for you as I pressed play on my iPod to listen to R.E.D. for the first time.
I got a little excited when I heard the first 2 tracks of your new CD. I really like Cracks in Mr. Perfect and Lazy Love is a nice little track too. But then Ne-Yo you went WAY left of center. You turned right at Albuquerque when you should have turned left.
You went off into this dark crazy pop Chris Brown, LMFAO land of horrid music. Ne-Yo did you lose your way? What were you thinking? Is this your way of expanding your horizons?
Track after track after track it just kept getting worse. I started calling your name?Ne-Yo! Ne-yo! Where are you?! Come back Ne-Yo I won?t talk about your Michael Jackson copycat sound ever again! But for the love of all things symphonic please stop making this kind of music!
About 10 songs in I realized that I couldn?t see a light at the end of this horrible musical tunnel. Where is the light Ne-Yo! Step into the light Ne-Yo! Then it dawned on me there are 17 damn tracks on this CD! 15 too many if you ask me! Ne-Yo why 17? Who does that? 17 isn?t even a nice number! What were you thinking, Ne-Yo?!
Then it finally ended! The CD was over! I could breathe again!
I?m going to be honest with you Ne-Yo this CD was not very good. Matter of fact it was whack, whacktacular even!
Ne-Yo I beg you to never make another CD like this again! It hurt to even listen to this CD. Please Ne-Yo! Please don?t ever make a CD like this again.

Album: good kid, m.A.A.D City
Genre: Hip-Hop
Sounds Like: an extremely solid Major Label debut of ?Average Guy Style? Hip-Hop that?s actually not ashamed to be what it is; the West Coast & Aftermath showing it can drop more than tired ?Gangsta Rap? audio cliches (4 out of 5, worth copping the full album on sale or a decent amount mp3s here)
Reviewer: DJ Fusion
Compton, California?s Kendrick Lamar hit the ground as an MC to really pay attention to during his run in the early to mid-2000s in the independent Hip-Hop scene through his own solo mixtapes and group releases as a part of the Black Hippy collective.
After dropping the deservedly critically acclaimed and independently released ?Section.80? full-length project in 2011, he was scooped up by Dr. Dre?s Aftermath Entertainment to start work on a major label full-length release.
Per usual in the Hip-Hop scene, there were worries that the uniqueness of Kendrick Lamar?s style ? the average guy rapper who acknowledges his environment in a dangerous area but won?t be trapped by it mentally or artistically ? would either be crushed, hidden and compromised by the Aftermath/Interscope label machine or that his 1st mainstream album would be milk-carton status on arrival, lost and never to be listened to by anyone except the stray label interns who might be holding onto the ?Dextox? album for ransom.
While not a perfect project, ?good kid, m.A.A.d city? ranks as one of the most solidly constructed and creatively expressive albums that have dropped in 2012 from any of the major label cliques and crews.
Besides opening up Kendrick Lamar to some of the best production money can currently buy and some nice marketing dollars, it seems like Dr. Dre?s direct hand in the 12 track collection of songs was pretty minimal ? and it works out for the best.
The production on this album is insanely on point and fits the young MC?s flows & song construction perfectly. Quality contributions of soulful mellow grooves, boom bap elements and bouncy funk (parts heavy, parts minimal, parts ?G-Funk?) by Pharrell, Hit-Boy, Just Blaze, T-Minus, Scoop DeVille, Like of Pac Div, Skhye Hutch, Tha Bizness, Terrance Martin and more really make this a release straight ready for heads to ride to in the car or mellow out with in the home spot.
The subject matter on ?good kid, m.A.A.D City? goes through thought conflicts about Kendrick Lamar?s love/hate relationship with his home area of Compton plus his ?can?t live with it, can?t live without it? viewpoints on the music industry, women, gangs, life as a whole and the myth/reality American Dream itself.
Kendrick Lamar?s gift is being able to tie all of these thoughts together in to a cohesive, smart and FUN album to listen to.
Sometimes these kind of theme albums can get a tad too pretentious, boring or preachy. His average guy vibe, pretty cool song writing skills along with a really smooth and lively flow and REALLY smart, direct and to the point lyricism really save the day. He wants to get a point out there, but is able to acknowledge that he has to actually craft quality songs to get those points across.
There are some relatively minor issues with the album.
A bit of the skit material drags on for a tad too long along with some weird spacing in between hooks on various songs. The while the vast majority of this album flows smooth like butter from track to track, joints like ?Poetic Justice? are a little jarring with trying little too hard to pander to the current mainstream radio trends of salacious ?get the girls? songs and the ending song ?Compton? ? while it does knock ? feel a little derivative of West Coast G-Funk hometown pride songs. A LITTLE more tightness on those ends could?ve made ?good kid, m.A.A.D City? damn near perfect.
?good kid, m.A.A.D City? at the end of the day isn?t just a fine display of a young MC on the rise with his talents and fame, but an example of what can happen when the label actually more or less leaves an artist alone who has built up their own indie fame by crafting a sense of authenticity and skills with the music and letting them just do them. Hip-Hop can reach for the stars if folks actually allow everyone?s unique talents to breath a bit.
Kendrick Lamar has put out a very solid project that?s not pandering to the harsh schisms of the current mainstream rap world for male MCs ? either being placed into a ?nihilistic gangsta? box or a pseudo ?lover boy? corner ? and coming out out the better for it. As of now at least, the good kid has actually found and succeeded as an artist in the m.A.A.D City of payola fame and music industry games.
Hope that audio saga continues.

Artist: Macy Gray
Genre: R&B/Pop/Rock
Sounds like: All of her other stuff, except this time around you already know the words.

?
What?s the first thing that jumps into your head when I say the name Macy Gray? ?Wacky haircut? Raspy voice? Funky clothing or huge sunglasses?
Sure Macy?s had a few hits in her day, and I?m willing to bet a bunch of you probably still have ?I Try? hiding on your iPod somewhere.
But in the end, Macy Gray is more of a personality than a songbook. Going to a Macy Gray concert isn?t so much a chance to hear her unique songs or artistic statements as much as it?s simply a chance to be a part of a retro-soul vibe for a few hours. You get the feeling a lot of players have Macy Gray songs on their make-out playlists, but don?t listen to her otherwise.
Not that there?s anything wrong with that ? especially if retro soul is your thing, but that in the end it seems like fans appreciate her overall style more far than they?re worried about the substance of what she?s doing. Macy Gray is a mood, kinda like soft jazz or that whole Michael Buble/Seth MacFarlane swing music thing.
So if you look at it that way, the fact that most of her music sounds exactly the same probably isn?t that big a deal in the larger scheme of things for her fans.
But as an artist, it sort of paints you into a corner.
And when you think of it that way ? the fact that Macy Gray has now released two albums of cover songs in the same year starts to makes a little more sense.
Famous musicians are kinda funny when it comes to breaking themselves out of creative ruts ? because you don?t want to stop the money train from showing up or alienate any of your hardcore fans, but if it?s not inspiring you to write new songs anymore, what can you do?
If you?re ?Macy Gray, you do exactly what a lot of other artists do ? you hire Hal Willner to produce your album.
Most of you have probably never heard of ?Hal Willner, but he?s kind of a legendary figure in the?industry. ?In addition to his work as an avant garde musician, Hal?s had a long and successful?career working as a composer of music for television shows based out of New York ? especially those looking to have music that sounds like popular songs on the radio. For example, Hal Willner writes the music for many of the parody songs on Saturday Night Live.
But what Hal Willner is most famous for are the albums he produces for artists who are looking for a way to express themselves outside of what their fans expect of them. He?s sort of the record industry?s crazy idea guy who says ?What if we got Elvis Costello to sing a bunch of Neil Young songs?? or ?Wouldn?t it be cool if we got a bunch of free jazz guys to do their versions of Sting??
Or to put it a little more simply, Hal Willner was the guy who put Lou Reed and Metallica in the same room to record an album version their interpretation of a 90 year-old Polish opera about a prostitute who wishes she was a dog.
This same Hal Willner was the guy who produced Macy Gray?s earlier 2012 release?Covered that saw her singing songs by Arcade Fire and Radiohead. It wasn?t particularly good (as I said in my?review) ?? but it seemed to re-energize Macy. So much so that she started discussing other ideas with Willner, who suggested Gray should re-interpret an entire album ? make it a tribute of sorts.
And so, Macy Gray?s version of Stevie Wonder?s album Talking Book was born.
Now before we do anything else let me say something ? having Macy Gray sing an entire album of Stevie Wonder songs was a great idea. Especially this album, which is a classic in it?s own right, but according to interviews was a also favorite of Macy?s when she was growing up. Not to mention the timing that puts the disc on the shelves on the 40th anniversary of it?s original release date, making it sort of a well-timed birthday present and honorary tribute for Stevie Wonder all at the same time.
And for her part, you have to imagine the process of learning, re-arranging, and presenting songs you?ve loved all your life was an amazing thing for Macy Gray to be a part of, especially for an artist possibly searching for new?inspiration ?but then when you crack the seal and start listening to the thing what you get is..

..welp
..More of that same Macy Gray wheezy-voiced slow-tempo crap she always comes up with.
I?m all for messing with conventions and trying things in different ways, but it seems like the plan here was to just slooooooowwwww everything down and drag things out ? which is an interesting twist at first,?but because this is an entire album, track-by-track (deep cuts included) what you end up with is a deep desire to find your original copy of the LP so you can get all the keyboard solos and energy back.
Hardcore fans might like this laid back approach, but really ? If the original groove to?Superstition was too bouncy and upbeat, why were you listening to Stevie Wonder in the first place?
Thanks for nothing, Hal.
See what you think, here?s ?Superstition?
And for a different view, here?s ?You and I?Source: http://ohnblog.com/newohnblog/2012/11/06/new-music-tuesday-11612/

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) ? The spade-toothed beaked whale is so rare that nobody has seen one alive, but scientists are sure the species exists.
Two skeletons were identified as belonging to the species after a 17-foot whale and her calf beached themselves in New Zealand in 2010. Scientists hope the discovery will provide insights into the species and into ocean ecosystems.
It was almost a missed opportunity, however, since conservation workers misidentified the carcasses as a much more common type of whale and buried them.
In a paper published Tuesday in the journal "Current Biology," researchers from New Zealand and the United States say of their discovery: "For the first time we have a description of the world's rarest and perhaps most enigmatic marine mammal."
Previously only three skull fragments of the species had been found: in New Zealand in 1872 and in the 1950s and the last one 26 years ago on an island off Chile. The males have broad blade-like tusk teeth that give the species its name. Both males and females have beaks which make them resemble dolphins.
"This is pretty fantastic," said Ewan Fordyce, a geology professor at the University of Otago who specializes in the evolution of whales and who was not involved in the research. "There would be few, if any, mammalian species in the world that would be rarer. And we know much more about panda bears and other iconic, rare animals."
The beached whales, an adult and her 11-foot male calf, were discovered on Opape Beach on the North Island on New Year's Eve in 2010. Conservation workers thought they were Gray's beaked whales and took tissue samples before burying them about nine feet under the sand.
Those samples ended up at the University of Auckland where scientists did routine tests about six months later. Rochelle Constantine, a co-author of the paper, said she and her colleague Kirsten Thompson couldn't believe it when the results showed the pair to be the rarest of whales.
"Kirsten and I went quiet. We were pretty stunned," she said.
Further tests confirmed the discovery. Constantine said they then retested about 160 samples taken from other stranded Gray's whales but didn't find any more that had been misidentified.
This year, researchers returned to the beach to exhume the skeletons.
Anton van Helden, who manages the marine mammals collection for New Zealand's national museum Te Papa, said it wasn't a straightforward task to find the remains after so long and that the mother's skull, which was buried shallower than the rest of the remains, washed out to sea. But they were able to recover the rest of the skeletons.
"It's a hugely significant find," said van Helden, a co-author of the paper.
He said it's impossible to know why the whales came ashore although whales often beach themselves when they become ill. He said almost nothing is known about the species except they live in the South Pacific Ocean and eat primarily squid.
Fordyce said it may be possible to use the skeletons of the rare whales to reconstruct their muscles and tissues and to find out more about how they live and die and why they are so reclusive.
The scientists say the discovery could also provide broader insights into the ocean's complex ecosystems.
"This is good reminder," said Constantine, "of how large the oceans are, and of how little we know about them."

Hail, NaNoWriMo authors!
I greet you at the beginning of a great journey. It's a journey inward, to the quiet, humid place inside you where words are born. (It's located precisely between your liver and your spleen?the trigeminus verbalis. A doctor told me, I swear.) It'll be an adventure of discovery, not only of the story you're about to write, but of self: you'll discover your own limits, your capacities, and maybe find some things you didn't know were rattling around down there in the dark. Don't be afraid to let them all out onto the page.
Before I dive into any real advice-giving here, there's something I need to get off my chest: I am, generally speaking, a fantastically slow writer?especially in terms of young adult fiction, where books are sometimes drafted and revised in a bare six months. I've been working on my second novel for more than a year now, drafting and re-drafting and tossing out whole reams of pages and starting again from nothing. If I write 1,500 words in a day, that's a victory. Two thousand words is an unparalleled miracle. Any more than that and the results are likely unreadable (but making them worth reading is what revisions are for, I constantly remind myself). I have never written as much in such a short amount of time as you are about to, although I think it would be very good for me to try. (Maybe I'll do NaNoWriMo myself next year!)
The reason I'm so slow is this: I have two editors. One is a human, a very kind and intelligent man who works for my publisher. He provides thoughtful and considered responses to the sometimes messy and disorganized piles of paper I shove toward him. The other editor lives inside my head. He is a mean little imp. He's hopped up on triple lattes and short on patience, and he reads over my shoulder as I'm writing, going hmmmm and making unpleasant little noises of disapproval. He is a relentless critic and a joyless taskmaster, and I try too hard to please him. He fundamentally misunderstands the revision process. He doesn't seem to realize that just getting my ideas down and out of my head is the first step of many, and that a finished, polished novel never, never?well, almost never?pours out of a writer on the first go. The initial effort is always a bit messy, and that's all right.
I think that impish little editor would benefit from NaNoWriMo. It would force me to ignore him. Eventually, I imagine, he'd get the idea and take a hike, and leave me alone for a few blissful days. We all have our inner editors?and if you can turn yours off for November, you'll have a much better month of noveling.
As long as I'm in confessional mode, here's another thing that makes first-drafting difficult for me: knowing where the story is going. This is something a lot of writers struggle with, especially new ones. Here's what I do: I outline as much as I can, with the knowledge that outlines are essentially acts of great and foolish optimism, road maps that will get rewritten along the way. But if I have absolutely no map, I am paralyzed and cannot begin. I'm not one of those writers who gets inspired by the blank page and the blinking cursor. I need to go off on long hikes alone and read books and watch movies and get tons of external input before even a single idea pops into my head?the ratio of input to output is easily 10 to 1?and then I can sit down and type things.
But those things are very amorphous at first. They are notes. Little ideas I chase down and catch like fireflies in a jar, if I'm lucky. I make dozens of pages of notes about scenes, or snippets of scenes, or characters, or how a story might feel, before I start writing the story itself. Then I'll figure out what a general, overarching structure might look like. It's broad stokes only: beginning, part of a middle, one of two pieces of the end. Then I focus in on the first chapter, the first scene, and I write practice versions of that scene without proper punctuation or quotation marks around the dialogue, and little notes to myself peppered throughout, and then, in that already-messy document?that no-longer-intimidating, very-much-not-a-blank-page-anymore page?I'll start to write the real thing. (Or at least, the first draft of the real thing.)
In other words, I have an idea about what I'm going to write before I write it, but it's an inherently changeable thing. I will often have better ideas in the midst of writing. My best ideas tend to arrive at the least opportune times: like when I've already written half of a book, and I suddenly figure out a much better way to attack the opening chapters.
So if new ideas that seem like better ideas come at you like little attack drones while you're writing, take heart: this is normal. Remember those ideas. Write them down somewhere. But for the sake of your first draft, just keep going. Plow on through. Because the idea-grass is always greener, and the idea you're not writing will always seem like a better idea than the one you are writing, at the time. But it isn't necessarily.
I hope some of that is helpful to you, dear 'Mo-er, as you embark on this rather brave adventure. I think the takeaway is that it's all about trusting yourself: turn off that inner editor and don't let other, shinier-seeming ideas distract you partway through. Some days will be easier than others, but in the end you'll be glad you stayed the course.

Trout with Cooked Beans
By Walter Coraza Morveli (translated by David Knowlton)
Extras in Cuzco are special meals, and they are gigantic portions. This is good food that many people desire. Extras are really the food that Cuzque?os eat.
Extras are traditional dishes that are typical and representative of Cuzco. The are stand out dishes that with time have fused with Creole cuisine from the cost. Today what we see is an established code that is a mixture of the two worlds of food, Cuzco and the coast.
The custom of Cuzco is to eat well. This means that there should be a lot of food and that it should be good. Extras, like other dishes the people of Cuzco like, are mountains of food. The dishes are always well served and delivered. In the most traditional of places they even offer seconds if you wish, what we call a yapa. All of this enchants the people of Cuzco. They like it to be traditional, well served, and well delivered. That is the most pleasing.

Special Broth as First Course
These special dishes are sold throughout the city in a whole range of restaurants. As a result some things vary and some ingredients change, but in the end all are similar. We can go to a picanter?a, a quinta, a huarique, or just to the market, to name places where traditional Cuzco-style food is offered, in order to enjoy these wonderful dishes that characterize our city and region.
One of the best places to find good extras as well as other options from a varied menu is the San Pedro Market. Every day it draws a multitude of customers from among the people of Cuzco and foreigners.
The Market is divided into sections in terms of what is offered. The names labeling each section are written in Quechua and then translated into Spanish and English. They are found on banners that hang from the ceiling at the beginning of each sector.
Where extras are sold is named ?Llactanchis Mijuy? in Quechua, in Spanish ?Comida Popular?, and in English ?Popular Food?. To know more of the names in Quechua, ask one of the caseras, the vendors, who sell full meals. They told me that ?llactanchis mijuy? really means in Spanish ?la comida del pueblo? which in English is ?the food of the ordinary people? or the town.

Eating Extras in San Pedro Market
Each casera has a small stand located in a small area that draws many people on a narrow row. Where the extras are sold is really in small restaurants open to the public with tables and chairs on the aisle. There people share tables and eat in harmony. You can?t reserve a table here. Everyone eats together since the tables are large and the chairs big.
The restaurants are all in a row. There are seven, one after another. There is a strong demand for extras. For that reason each stand has its own barkers, called jaladores, who every day fight to pull in customers to fill up the restaurant?s tables. The barkers carry a menu where they have a list of all the extras that are offered in these places.
The restaurants offer a varied selection of dishes. Every morning they have a range of special soups. These are the concentrated soups that people like to have as breakfast, before starting their day. Each bowl of soup gives you energy to start your daily labors and they are completely Cuzcque?o. Among the popular soups are soup from head, lamb soup, soup from knuckles, malaya soup, chicken soup, and tripe soup. These are the most well known and consumed.

A Baker from Toribio Restaurant
At midday, the hour of lunch, the stands come alive again with their extras. Its people and the narrow aisle of the sector come to life with the voices of the barkers calling out their offerings as they attempt to convince people to come and try their delicious special dishes.
To open the appetite they serve a small bowl of concentrated broth. This lamb broth has a wonderful subtle flavor. They give it to you to both distract you a bit and to keep you busy while waiting for them to bring you your main course. They generally have a long list of offerings, such as malaya, beef steak, trout, and milanesa (breaded cutlets) of beef, chicken, and trout. Every dish has the meat and its accompaniments which are rice, french fries and salad, or they could come with beans, mashed potatoes, or pasta. besides the classic Cuzco dishes these restaurants also offer creole classics such as lomo saltado or lomo montado. This last is a steak with a fried egg on top. To drink you can choose a natural drink made from apple or sodas.

Filette of Baked Chicken with Mashed Potatoes and Rice
Many tourists join the people of Cuzco at the tables who come every day to enjoy this culinary experience.
In comparison with the price of a normal fixed price, set lunch, a menu as we call it, the extras are a bit expensive. The Menu is around 5/S ($2 US) while the extras cost from 10-15 /S ($4-$6 US) a high price for the people of Cuzco.
Cuzco offers us a wide set of gastronomic possibilities. There is really a great variety, from Chinese to Korean, Thai, Middle Eastern, Novo-Andean and Argentine. But is we wish to get to know the city of Cuzco then we cannot do better than to go to a place liek the San Pedro market, sit at a common table, and enjoy an extra. This is part of the heart and soul of Cuzco.
