Altidore, Chandler, Gatt start for US at Russia

Jozy Altidore and Timmy Chandler have returned to the U.S. starting lineup for an exhibition game against Russia and Josh Gatt has been given his national team debut.

Altidore was dropped from the roster for last month's World Cup qualifiers after poor performances against Jamaica in September. Chandler had not played for the Americans since last November, uncertain whether he wanted to commit to the U.S. program.

Tim Howard started in goal for Wednesday's game at Krasnodar, with Chandler at right back, Geoff Cameron and captain Carlos Bocanegra in central defense and Fabian Johnson at left back. Gatt, a 21-year-old from Plymouth, Mich., who plays for Norwegian champion Molde, was joined in the midfield by Danny Williams, Jermaine Jones and Michael Bradley. Altidore was paired at forward with Herculez Gomez.

Government Signs Agreement With Microsoft | Bernews.com

Minister of Business Development and Tourism, Wayne Furbert, signed a new agreement with the Microsoft Corporation on Wednesday [Nov 14] for the continued use of the company?s online safety material at no charge.

The original agreement was signed on August 27, 2007 following the passage of the Criminal Code Amendment Act 2007 that provides comprehensive laws to prevent the sexual exploitation and abuse of children, especially on the Internet. It was the first kind of such agreement in the Caribbean region.

A second agreement was signed on October 22, 2010. Today?s signing ceremony permits the Government of Bermuda to continue to have access to certain content, videos and other information dealing with cyber security developed by Microsoft and was signed by Minister Furbert and Microsoft Regional Manager, George Gobin, who came to Bermuda for this purpose.

The materials will be used by the Department of E-Commerce for the redevelopment and re-launch of the www.cybertips.bm website. The materials include security videos and other documents produced by Microsoft that promote safe practices using technology for students, parents, teachers and individuals at home or work.

Minister Furbert said: ?We thank Microsoft for the continued use of these materials. Technology is pervasive in Bermuda an as digital citizens we must ensure that we are safe and secure in our interactions.

?We are grateful for the access to tools that this Microsoft agreement provides, as we work to provide the public with the latest information and resources to promote online safety and security for all Bermuda residents.?

Mr. Gobin said: ?We are honoured to extend this agreement with the Ministry of Business Development and Tourism on behalf of the Government of Bermuda. Security, internet safety and privacy are clearly top priorities for Microsoft. We are committed to building trust ? and trustworthiness ? in computing so that customers can have the very best experience with our technology and can realize their full potential.?

Nancy Volesky, Director of E-Commerce said: ?We appreciate that the Microsoft Corporation continues to work closely with Bermuda. As we use these materials for the redesign of the cybertips.bm website, we hope to reinforce good practices, educate Bermuda users about the risks of using various technologies and promote safety online?

New type of bacterial protection found within cells: Novel immune system response to infections discovered

ScienceDaily (Nov. 13, 2012) ? UC Irvine biologists have discovered that fats within cells store a class of proteins with potent antibacterial activity, revealing a previously unknown type of immune system response that targets and kills bacterial infections.

Steven Gross, UCI professor of developmental & cell biology, and colleagues identified this novel intercellular role of histone proteins in fruit flies, and it could herald a new approach to fighting bacterial growth within cells. The study appeared November 13 in eLife, a new peer-reviewed, open-access journal supported by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, the Max Planck Society and the Wellcome Trust.

"We found that these histone proteins have pan-antibacterial abilities and can have a wide-ranging effect," Gross said. "If we can discover how to manipulate the system to increase histone levels, we may one day have a new way to treat patients with bad bacterial infections."

Histones exist in large numbers in most animal cells; their primary job is to help DNA strands fold into compact and robust structures inside the nucleus. Gross said there is some evidence that histones secreted from cells protect against bacteria living outside cells. However, many bacteria enter cells, where they can avoid the immune system and continue replicating.

In principle, Gross said, histones could protect cells against such bacteria from the inside, but for many years this was thought unlikely because most histones are bound to DNA strands in the cell nucleus, whereas bacteria multiply in the cellular fluid outside the nucleus, called cytosol. Additionally, free histones can be extremely damaging to cells, so most species have developed mechanisms to detect and degrade free histones in the cytosol.

In their study, Gross and colleagues demonstrate that histones bound to lipid (fat) droplets can protect cells against bacteria without causing any of the harm normally associated with the presence of free histones. In experiments with lipid droplets purified from Drosophila fruit fly embryos, they show that lipid-bound histones can be released to kill bacteria.

The researchers injected similar numbers of bacteria into Drosophila embryos that contained lipid-bound histones and into embryos genetically modified to not contain them. They discovered that the histone-deficient flies were 14 times more likely to die of bacterial infections. Similar results were found in experiments on adult flies. Additional evidence suggested that histones might also protect mice against bacteria.

"Because numerous studies have now identified histones on lipid droplets in many different cells -- from humans as well as mice and flies -- it seems likely that this system may be quite general," Gross said.

'Grimm' star dishes on kissing Nick and Renard

    Scott Green / NBC

Bitsie Tulloch as Juliette on "Grimm."

    By Anna Chan, TODAY

"Grimm's" gorgeous hexenbiest Adalind (Claire Coffee) sure created quite a mess last season when she poisoned Juliette (Bitsie Tulloch) via cat scratch. Now, one of the side effects of the spell has Juliette in a love triangle as she tries to rebuild her relationship with forgotten boyfriend Nick (David Giuntoli) as she falls for Capt. Renard (Sasha Roiz).

Yes, Juliette's love life is a mess, but Tulloch has found a major perk with her story line: how ... ahem ... closely she works with the two handsome men.

"It's been more fun for me with everything that's going on this season, and obviously, getting to make out with two sexy guys as opposed to just one is never a bad thing," she told reporters during a Monday conference call. "All I have to say is that the whole love triangle has been remarkably entertaining for me as an actress. And obviously, it was amazing just getting to make out with David Giuntoli. But when you throw Sasha Roiz into the mix, I'm a very, very lucky woman."

(She also confessed to reporters that one of the men is a better kisser than the other, but wouldn't say who.)

The actress admitted that she didn't know if Juliette would regain her memories of Nick, but hinted that there may still be hope for the two former lovers. "There's definitely a spark there," Tulloch said. "There's still a reason they fell in love in the first place. There was a lot of love there."

She also pointed out a big dilemma for Juliette's love life. "If you go for Renard, you're going for, like, the passion and the lust," she said. "If you go for Nick, you're going for the love and the comfort. So that's the perpetual question I'm constantly asking myself."

Tulloch also teased that Friday's new episode, the last before the midseason break, will be "a huge one" with a cliffhanger.

"Adalind is just back to sort of wreak havoc everywhere she can," the actress said. "She's trying to sort of avenge her mother's death. How much I play into that story line remains to be seen."

But as the teaser has shown, viewers can expect Nick's heart to be broken when Juliette confesses she has feelings for another man. Let's just hope that won't get in the way of him stopping whatever Adalind has up her sleeve.

"Grimm" airs at 9 p.m. Friday on NBC.

Who do you think Juliette should choose: Nick or Capt. Renard? Tell us your pick on our Facebook page!
