Fla. St. routs BYU in Coaches v. Cancer opener

NEW YORK (AP) -- Florida State had a game coaches dream about: the Seminoles shot the ball well and defended like their lives depended on it.

"I thought for a young team we displayed an ability to score even though we're in sync. We had some mishaps while trying to learn," Florida State coach Leonard Hamilton said. "Defensively, that was one of our better nights."

The Seminoles shot 58 percent from the field and made 11 of 20 3-pointers in an 88-70 victory over BYU in the Coaches vs. Cancer semifinals on Friday night at the Barclays Center.

The defense Hamilton was so happy about held the Cougars to 33 percent shooting overall and 6 of 25 from 3-point range.

"Thirty-three percent from the field surprised our coaches and players," BYU coach Dave Rose said. "Florida State sped us up and we took some quick shots but besides that Florida State shoots 58 percent from the field. Our defense was slow. Our rotations were slow. They did a great job of finding the open man and made some great passes along the baseline."

Florida State (2-1) will play Saint Joseph's in Saturday night's championship game. The Hawks (2-0) beat Notre Dame 79-70 in overtime.

Okaro White scored 17 points for the Seminoles, while Michael Snaer had 16 points and 10 rebounds and Ian Miller and Devon Bookert both added 15 points.

Hamilton said Snaer has more to do than score and rebound.

"Michael, being a senior on such a young team has at some points forced his will on this team," Hamilton said of Snaer who was the MVP of the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament last season. "He wants all the dirty work, the toughest defensive assignment. He wants to take the big shot or be on the foul line at the end of the game. He led by example for the seven new players."

One of those seven, freshman point guard Devon Bookert, agreed with his coach.

"He's a guy who has been there and done that," said Bookert who was 5 for 7 from the field and had five assists as he took the over running the offense for long stretches. "He is cool all the time, but he's tough when he thinks he has to be."

The Seminoles came into the game shooting 38.5 percent from 3-point range but they made 11 of 20 as they led by as many as 27 points in the second half. They shot 58.0 percent (29 for 50) from the field overall while holding down a BYU offense that came in averaging 80.5 points per game.

Tyler Haws had 23 points, nine rebounds and five assists for the Cougars (2-1) who were within 50-43 with 17:30 to play.

The Seminoles went on a 13-0 run making all three of their 3-point attempts, two by Snaer.

Florida State went ahead 77-50 with 9:06 to play on a drive by Bookert. The Cougars closed within 14 points twice but got no closer.

Brandon Davies had 19 points for the Cougars despite playing just 21 minutes because of foul trouble.

Matt Carlino, a sophomore guard who averaged 12 points and shot 32.6 percent from 3-point range, missed all nine of his shots from field, including four 3-point attempts, and the Cougars were 6 of 25 from 3-point range and they shot 33 percent overall (25 of 75).

"Matt is a lot stronger and in better shape than last year but they seemed to rush him a little bit," Rose said. "The more he plays the more comfortable he will get. He took good shots but had a hard time making them. If we shoot 25 3s we better make more than six."

Rose made a reference to a game when a big deficit didn't deter the Cougars. BYU rallied from a huge deficit to beat Iona in the opening round of the NCAA tournament last season.

"We were down 25 in a game last year and we won it," he said, "so it can happen."

BYU came into the game shooting 53 percent from the field and 38 percent on 3s.

Haws, who entered the game averaging 22 points a game, scored BYU's first 11 points but the Cougars were down by nine points. Brock Zylstra's 3-pointer with 10:14 left in the first half were the first BYU points not scored by Haws.

Haws finished with 15 points in the half as the Seminoles took a 44-35 lead.

Florida State shot 60 percent (15 for 25) in the first half and forced BYU into eight turnovers that the Seminoles turned into 13 points.

Japan?s gadget failures: The futures that never happened

TOKYO, Nov 18 ? It gave us the Walkman, the pocket calculator and heated toilet seats, but Japan?s path to innovative greatness is littered with failures such as the TV-shaped radio and the ?walking? toaster.

These and other retro appliances are part of a treasure-trove offering a glimpse of futures that never happened on Japan?s journey to becoming a worldwide byword for invention during the late 1950s and early 1960s.

This picture taken on September 14, 2012 shows Japan?s home electrical appliances collector Kenichi Masuda displaying Toshiba?s ?Walking Type Toaster WT-2? (left) and ?Snack-3? cooking machine in Tokyo. For Masuda, these quixotic gadgets show the bravery and idealism of Japanese companies in a high-growth era. Japanese consumer electronics evolved from this trial-and-error period to sweep the world in the late 20th century, with Sony?s Walkman standing as perhaps the epitome of Nippon Know-how. ? AFP/Relaxnews

?Way back before Cool Japan was an Uncool Japan,? said Kenichi Masuda, 49, referencing the marketing slogan Tokyo uses to sell itself at home and abroad.

Masuda has made a life?s work of gathering the also-rans in the race to consumer supremacy.

Witness Iwatsu Electric?s ?Both Phone? ? two telephones attached back to back with only one receiver, apparently to allow someone to make calls from either side. But only one at a time.

Marvel at Fuji Electric?s double-decked electric fan ? the ?Silent Pair?, which definitely is a pair, but not exactly silent.

Browsing Masuda?s collection sends the viewer through a portal to a different time, a period when the ?three sacred treasures? ? the television, refrigerator and washing machine ? were status symbols to which all self-respecting housewives in booming Japan would aspire.

But for those who could not afford a real television ? Japan?s first domestically-produced set cost the equivalent of three years? salary for a mid-1950s high school graduate ? the next best thing was readily available.

The ?Sharp Cinema Super? is a radio in the shape of a television and cost ?10,900 ? a little more than a month?s salary for an elite public servant of the time.

?The delight of having the impression of watching TV would, however, fade quickly with this still screen, ? said Masuda, adding: ?I bet the man who bought this was scolded by his wife.?

Panasonic?s television-shaped gas stove GSF-1 is the most expensive model among a range of gas heaters the company sold over 30 years.

?Is there any real meaning in this? No, but this shows how people admired television sets,? he said as he showed AFP the stove, one of the 2,000 items he has amassed over nearly three decades.

Other marvels include the ?satellite-type? washing machine ? a round metal pod with a handle that stirs dirty laundry in water and detergent.

The product was launched in 1957, amid public excitement over the Soviet Union?s Sputnik, the world?s first artificial satellite.

Sharp?s ?Quicky? ? a pair of electric scissors and Toshiba?s prosaically named ?CK-31A? electric can opener were both failures.

Hitachi?s ?Piano? is a desk-top electric fan that is, for no discernable reason, shaped like a miniature piano and is supposed to emit a gently scented breeze.

Not to be confused with typical hotel ?conveyor belt? toasters, Toshiba?s ?walking-type toaster? has a slit entrance for the slice of bread, which is then ?walked? vertically down inside the toaster on metal rails.

When the toast eventually emerges at the other end, it feels like a major achievement.

?This didn?t sell. There?s no way Japan?s small kitchens had room for a product whose size and price were twice those of common models,? Masuda said.

His personal favourite in this category is Toshiba?s ?Snack-3?, a device that can warm milk while toasting a slice of bread and frying an egg.

Would-be consumers might have seen through this one.

?People may have wanted to have Western-Style breakfast at the time... though you would become tired of that fairly quickly,? he said.

For Masuda, these quixotic gadgets show the bravery and idealism of Japanese companies in a high-growth era that was crowned by the 1964 Tokyo Olympics and the launch of bullet trains.

?They are adorable. You can see how they came about from companies pouring so much effort in to pleasing customers. It?s just that sometimes, these efforts backfired,? said Masuda.

?But they were serious products made by adults for adults.?Japanese consumer electronics evolved from this trial-and-error period to sweep the world in the late 20th century ? with Sony?s Walkman standing as perhaps the epitome of Nippon Know-how.

But then it all went wrong.

Household names that appeared almost indestructible in the 1980s ? Panasonic, Sharp and Sony ? are shadows of their former selves, struggling to keep up with their South Korean and Taiwanese rivals.

For Masuda, these companies lost their nimbleness and their playful sense of adventure when they got too large.

?As they grew bigger and bigger, they became mindful of ?marketing,? ?profitability?, ?safety? and the like. They may have become too slow to act,? he said.

?But companies in this period were vigorous and had a ?go-for-it? spirit. They weren?t afraid of failures.?

So how do they get back to their roots?

That, admits Masuda, has him stumped.

?If I knew that, I?d be a company president.? ? AFP/Relaxnews

Iran holds Syria reconciliation conference

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) ? Iran held Sunday a conference to reconcile Syria's government with opposition factions and end the country's civil war, the official IRNA news agency reported.

The report said the one-day meeting of some 200 opposition members and Syria's National Reconciliation Minister Ali Haidar could be a step toward a future, broad-based opposition gathering, although it did not say if any of Syria's major rebel or exile groups had attended. Most of those groups distrust Iran, a key ally of their adversary President Bashar Assad.

Iran's Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi warned at the opening of the meeting that providing opposition groups with heavy arms could put the entire region at risk of "organized terrorism."

He said that arming Assad's opponents, as Damascus accuses Qatar and Saudi Arabia of doing, violates international law and principles of non-intervention in countries' domestic affairs.

Salehi reiterated Iran's traditional stance on Syria, blaming "foreign intervention and irresponsible armed groups" for the country's uprising. He said Iran supports peaceful solutions to end the crisis.

The conference is seen as a reaction to last week's meeting in Qatar in which opposition groups formed an umbrella coalition to topple Assad.

In August, Iran held a previous conference on the Syria conflict, attended by representatives of 30 countries. The Islamic Republic has supported Assad in the 20-month uprising, repeatedly accusing the West and Israel of instigating the conflicts.

Big Data to Create 960K New IT Jobs in APAC by 2015: Gartner

As more enterprises invest in big data, 960,000 new IT jobs will be created in the Asia-Pacific region in the next three years, but only one-third of these big data roles will be filled due to a skills shortage, according to a Gartner analyst.

Speaking at Gartner's annual Symposium/ITxpo on the Gold Coast, Gartner senior vice president and global head of research Peter Sondergaard told delegates that governments and organisations in the APAC region will need to focus on big data education and skills development, such as data science, to remain competitive.

Developers wooed by D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray

Mayor Vincent Gray sought to enlist the backing of D.C.?s development community Thursday for his ambitious 5-year economic development plan, unveiled to the public less than 24 hours earlier.

Gray, in a forum hosted by the D.C. Building Industry Association, pledged the District?s support in enacting some of the goals, such as reducing the ?regulatory strangulation? that impedes development and courting Washington?s technology, medical and higher education sectors to decrease D.C.?s reliance on developers for tax revenue. Gray and his top economic development chief, however, also challenged developers, saying it will be important for them to lend their support to the plan?s initiatives, such as eliminating the capital gains tax for technology firms considering setting up shop in the District.

Samsung wants to take a peek inside Apple's patent settlement with ...

Always on the lookout to possibly improve its legal position in the ongoing stand-off with Apple, Samsung on Friday filed a court order seeking to force Apple to turn over a copy of the HTC agreement. As Cody told you, Apple and HTC settled litigation with a ten-year licensing agreement worth nearly $3 billion.

Neither company has released the specifics of the deal, leaving Samsung to wonder whether the agreement includes the famous iPhone software features that Apple successfully asserted against Samsung. You know, the stuff like rubber-band scrolling, pinch zoom and other iPhone perks?

Samsung?s bet is that if these prized patents are part of Apple?s deal with HTC, it undermines Apple?s efforts to seek ban on the sale of Samsung products on the grounds of those same patents.

Reuters has the story:

Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, which could face such a sales ban following a crushing jury verdict against it in August, now plans to ask a U.S. judge to force Apple to turn over a copy of the HTC agreement, according to a court filing on Friday.

Watchers think it would be very unusual if the HTC deal did not include all the patents. And by giving the ailing Android maker access to prized iPhone patents, conventional wisdom has it, Samsung would find itself in a position where as a market leader it would be unable to offer the same level of user experience as HTC, which is struggling with sales and quarterly losses.

The story notes that judges ?are reluctant to block the sale of products if the dispute can be resolved via a licensing agreement?.

Apple lawyers said during the massive Apple v. Samsung trial that the iPhone maker is unwilling to license patents?that cover Apple?s unique user experience, including touchscreen functionality and design.

Apple only licensed?those holy patents to Microsoft, with whom it signed an anti-cloning agreement as part of the deal. One of the prized patents was also licensed to Nokia and IBM.

In opposing Apple?s injunction request last month, Samsung said Apple?s willingness to license at all shows money should be sufficient compensation, court documents show.

In a court filing last week, Apple argued that its Nokia, IBM and Microsoft deals shouldn?t stand in the way of an injunction. Microsoft?s license only covers Apple patents filed before 2002, and IBM signed several years before the iPhone launched, according to Apple.

Of course, it?s entirely plausible that Apple?s licensing agreement with HTC does not include those key patents, which could indicate that CEO Tim Cook is taking a different approach to litigation than his predecessor Steve Jobs.

Cook noted as much when he shared his view of Android litigation as a ?necessary evil?.

What do you think?

facebook and the other woman, well one of the firsts

Good ol facebook....ugh I have been separated from my ex for two and a half years, divorce to be finalized soon. We have a mutual friend. This friend says he is "Switzerland"--he doesn't tell my ex what I say and doesn't give me any updates on the ex. Well last night, Switzerland posted a pic from the tv show The Big Bang Theory. I am just getting into this show and love it, so I commented "Bazinga!" A few hours ago, I get up to go to work and see I have a facebook notification on my phone. When I look, this woman posted a comment also. This woman is one of the first women my ex had an affair with.

It was back in '96. I was 20 and the ex was 21, so he had started going to the bars. She was 29 with three kids. She didn't even know he had a girlfriend. Four months later, it all came out and he came crying back to me. We lived with my parents at the time. How my parents were able to stay out of our flawed relationship, I'll never know! So, the other woman continued to go to the bars, get drunk and call our house at 3am! I'm sure she thought she was talking to me, but no, it was my mother!!!!! She would go on about all the promises my ex had made to her and her kids. These harrassing calls went on for four months!!! My mom and I were too scared to press charges because we didn't want to have to go to court and face this woman. I know, I should've kicked him to the curb when I first found out about the affair!

I thought my ex was everything, my soulmate. My first love! So, I did everything to try to keep him happy with me. He blamed the affair on me, because I worked 2nd shift and was not home in the evenings. He liked that she had her own place with an airconditioned bedroom! So, we began buying things to keep him happy. Eventually, I changed shifts and quit doing any extra activites that I enjoyed. All my passions so I could be home and available for my love whenever he might want to spend a few minutes with me. We bought an AC unit for the bedroom, a large tv and Playstation so we could put a game room in the basement, a '67 Camaro project car to entertain him and since his truck was a piece of crap, a brand new pickup truck! How nice!!! Grrrrr Did I mention he was unemployed at the time, another reason he needed entertained. He was supposed to be going to GED prep classes with his brother, but the bar scene won instead. My mom heard an ad on the radio and got the information to get him a state grant and into trucking school which was his dream. I was determined to make this relationship work.

I was a very good drummer, and I marched with a local alumni drum corps that did parades, another thing for him to say I was too busy for him. I was twenty years old, marching beside men in their forties and fifties, and I was not only keeping up, but the instructor told me I should be one of the leaders of the line, not a follower! A very proud moment for me. Definitely my biggest passion! So, I marched in the local Halloween parade with the group. We did a performance at the end of the parade and I felt kinda funny like someone was watching me? Weird, since I was performing infront of a crowd, but this was different, very strange. What do you know, my boyfriend's 'mistress' was right in front of me. I did not break rank! I had to stand and play and perform with her at the edge of the street. Her friend made sure to let me know who they were between songs, loudly asking her if she talked to my boyfriend lately. That was the last time I performed with the group. I gave it up. I couldn't be away from my boyfriend because he would run around on me. I found new hobbies like crafts, painting, knitting and crocheting...things to do at home so I would always be available for my man. Bring on the weight gain....

Well, we married in 2000. I thought we were doing good. While I don't suggest an affair, I thought we had come through it and were closer because of it. A year later, his cell phone bill went over $500. Being a devoted wife who took care of everything for him, I called the company to see what had happened. They gave me the number that was used most frequently on the phone. Big surprise, it was the same woman, living in my town, about four miles from our house. She was engaged to someone else now, and assured me there was nothing going on between them. My husband would call her every morning and talk for two hours while she was getting her kids ready for school. She was a stay at home mom. Great mom! on the phone the whole morning instead of spending the time with her kids! My husband had a burn mark above his ear where the phone would get so hot from being on it for so long! I think I was working third shift now, so I was sleeping and again unavailable. We bought a motorcycle this time. This is when I began checking phone bills on a regular basis. I remember one major fight we had on a weekend of a local motorcycle rally. It was freezing cold and windy, but he had to take the bike out. I was so mad at him for leaving in those conditions, I begged him to stay and be safe. Phone records showed he drove five miles up the road and called her. She must not have been available because he came back home. I was crushed! Even with "nothing" going on between them, he had chose her through a nasty storm! I died a little more inside, but still stayed with him. He was my husband and I said vows to him. That meant something to me.

In 2010, while investigating another affair, I went through my husband's contacts on his phone. Two of the other truck drivers had two cell phones??? Something about one contract not being up before they started one with another company? Fishy then, and really fishy now! I knew the one and his two phones but here was another. I saw both numbers had been called recently and for long conversations. So, I called the second number and what do you know, it was the same girl again! Now married, I didn't recognize her at first but as soon as we hung up she called my husband to let him know I had called her checking up on him.

I never want to be that person checking phone bills and text messages again. I drove myself crazy over the years and the many affairs! Desperate to prove him right, I did research and found out what towers calls came from, trying to see if he was where he said he was. I just wanted him to be faithful and happy with me. I wanted to believe his stories and not that he was the lying, cheating, scumbag that I was finding the facts to support. I tried so hard to believe him. If I said the grass was green, he would say it was brown and I would defend his theory because you know, in the summer and winter, the grass dies and turns brown. My self esteem was at its lowest. The weight gain became another reason for him to cheat.

So, we have been separated for a long time now and soon the divorce will be final. I have let him go and he finally let me go long enough so I could see daylight and how things really were. I thought I had no regrets because I don't feel that I did anything wrong, to destroy the marriage or relationship. I gave it everything I had to keep it together. I will probably never do that again which is a good thing but I always thought marriage meant commitment and sticking by your spouse through thick and thin.

This morning, seeing her comment right below my comment on facebook, I fell into a deep dark place. My regret? I should've let her have him the first time around. I wish I could've let him go back then.

I was thin and beautiful with a very bright future back then. Graduated top 20 of my high school class and should've went to college. Instead, I got a job at the local factory where I still work.

Why do I give her so much power over me??? I hated her for all these years because it was so much easier to blame her than the man I loved so much. He is facebook friends with her and her daughter. I knew this for a long time now. While it hurt a little, I didn't want to know what he was doing now. I try not to care. I don't want him in my life. Seeing them as friends on facebook, I assume she never was out of his life.

But knowing she is alive and well and seeing her post right below my comment are two very different things. I deleted my comment and now blocked her and her daughter. Yes, stick my head in the sand so I can pretend they don't exist and I can be happy in my own little world.

I just want all of this hurt and anger to go away. I go to a divorce support group and it is helping. I finally have some goals for myself. I was doing well. For a long time, everything was so hopeless. At the support group, they say it takes about five years to get over a divorce. I was with him for seventeen years, married just short of ten years. I should've been over him the moment he walked out on me! I should've been doing cartwheels! I don't want to waste any more time on him! I don't want to fall into the dark place when something so long ago gets near me. Crippling anxiety and depression and an instant migraine. Called into work again. My attendance is horrible and then I worry about my job future and if I will ever be rid of these feelings. Everything just piles up. I was doing so well this week and now this.
Back to bed. Hope I feel better when I wake up. Be able to get back on my feet and out of this place. Must exercise when I get up, that will help. Charge an mp3 player and listen to good music. Find myself again. Sorry this is so long, just needed to get it all out.

Florida Restaurant Owner Considers Obamacare Surcharge ...

Business owners nationwide are making preparations for the upcoming Obamacare regulatory tsunami. Citing cumbersome regulations and costs, entrepreneurs are being forced to make very difficult decisions. The stories are becoming all too common. In order to keep their businesses afloat, companies are laying off workers, reducing their hours and in some cases, closing locations.?

The problem is not industry specific either. Energy companies, technology companies, retail establishments and restaurants are all facing the economic challenges created by Obamacare. Following the re-election of President Obama, several restauranteurs have gone to the press to express their disastifaction with the President's hallmark legislation.?

Yesterday, Florida restaurant owner, John Metz explained that in preparation for the January 2014 regulatory onslaught, he will be forced to take drastic measures. Metz owns 40 Denny's locations, several Dairy Queens and the Hurricane Grill & Wings franchise. In order to offset the cost of Obamacare, Metz is considering adding a 5% surcharge to all purchases, effectively passing the cost on to the consumer.?

But the consumer would not be the only affected party. According the Huffington Post, Metz plans to meet with employees next month to explain, "that because of Obamacare, we are going to be cutting front-of-the-house employees to under 30 hours, effective immediately." ?Metz went on to say, "I think it's a terrible thing. It's ridiculous that the maximum hours we can give people is 28 hours a week instead of 40. It's going to force my employees to go out and get a second job."

As Newsmax reports, Obamacare requires businesses with over 50 employees to ?offer a government-approved insurance plan. ?The penalty for not doing so is $2,000 per full-time employee for business employing at least 30 people. Metz said he would, "love to cover all employees" under their insurance plan, "but to pay $5,000 per employee would cost us $175,000 per restaurant, and unfortunately, most of our restaurants don't make $175,000 a year. I can't afford it."

Business owners must operate in reality, and the reality is that capital always finds the most efficient means. ?So as businesses are forced to deal with the realities of Obamacare, we can expect to see more reduction of hours, more layoffs and people who in reality cannot afford the "Affordable Care Act."?

Twitter helps 'convey a message of deterrence,' says Israel's IDFSpokesperson

Israel and Hamas are fighting a war on a new front. This week, they took to Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and other social media to report live on real-world attacks in Gaza... or, depending on who you ask, to spread propaganda. Now, the brains behind @IDFSpokesperson have been revealed.

According to the Associated Press, Lt. Col. Avital Leibovich is the woman in charge of the Israeli Defense Forces' brand-new "Interactive Media" branch, a collection of 30 soldiers trained to craft the blog posts, infographics and status updates that comprise Israel's media campaign. The group was reportedly formed just two months ago, but it's apparently already important to the military's operations. In February, Leibovich told the AP, she'll be departing her current post as international spokeswoman to concentrate on social media.

So what, after all, are the IDFSpokesperson's aims? "The goal is to reach as many audiences as possible, and second, to convey our message, without the touch of an editor," Leibovich told BuzzFeed.

She also seems to believe, though, that a Tweet can have a real-world effect, conveying a "message of deterrance" to Israel's enemies. Remember this tweet?

When BuzzFeed asked her whether a message like this was appropriate for Twitter, this was her reply:

"You call this violent language? When rockets are falling on our heads, and I'm referring to 500 rockets in the last 72 hours, if you can even imagine the extent. Then when you have certain time that you want to convey a message of deterrence to an audience, then that's a good tool to do it."

Leibovich, a mother of three, also said that it helped to have 18-year-old conscripts in her division because they understand social networks. "The creative side of the language almost comes natural," she said.
