BINGHAMTON, NY The Decker School of Nursing has received a two-year, $757,000 traineeship grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) to provide financial support for graduate students. The purpose of the grant, according to HRSA, is to "increase the number of advanced education nurses trained to practice as primary care providers and/or nursing faculty to address the nursing shortage that inhibits nursing schools from educating the number of nurses needed to meet demand."

"We received every penny we asked for," Decker School of Nursing Dean Joyce Ferrario said. "The funds, from HRSA's Division of Nursing, are being used for our nurse practitioner students for all of our specialties because they consider psych mental health primary care as well."

Funded students receive a stipend and tuition waiver, said Ferrario. "The Graduate School also provided a match of $25,000 in tuition, and actually, when the semester started, the grant hadn't come in and we had students with no funding, so the Graduate School also fronted us funds to get them started until the grant came in."

Students who are funded must stay academically sound to receive funding the second year. "This grant will get students through the master's degree," said Ferrario. "We are supporting some part-time students as well, and we've not been able to do that before." In total 15 full-time and eight part-time students are being funded.

Jo Ann Ernst applied for the funding at Ferrario's urging. A working nurse who returned to school after a number of years working in ambulatory and breast care at a local hospital, Ernst appreciates the ability to focus on her studies and training without the financial burden she might otherwise have.

"I'm not worried that I really should be working and now I can start my day and 'hit the books,'" she said. "My first two years I was a part-time student and also working, and I found that very difficult. Now I am a full-time student and this grant helps me not spread myself too thin."

Ernst hasn't yet settled on a nurse practitioner concentration, but said it will likely be primary care or a focus on diabetes. Her capstone project, which is still being formulated, is due next spring and she expects it will focus on diabetes and obesity. "Diabetes is a burden to have and it affects everything you do and everything your family does as well," she said.

Ernst then hopes to springboard from her capstone project as she pursues her Doctor of Nurse Practitioner degree. "My goal is to study really hard and when I get out to be the best practitioner that I can be," she said.

Another Decker student, Michele Summers, is still working part-time for Lourdes Home Care, where she started after earning her bachelor's degree in nursing from the Decker School in 2009. Now studying to become a family nurse practitioner and to earn her Doctor of Nurse Practitioner degree, she'll earn her master's degree along the way, in part thanks to the HRSA grant tuition and stipend support.

Summers, who may continue on for her PhD after earning her DNP, has three full-time college students in her household. "It means a lot to me not to have to stress our family finances," she said. "I didn't want to take out more loans if I didn't have to. I would love to teach plus develop something in the community."

Obama may get chance to end Benghazi PR disaster

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The White House could finally have its chance to close the books on its Benghazi public relations disaster, as key Republicans signal they might not stand in the way of U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice to become the next secretary of state.

"I think she deserves the ability and the opportunity to explain herself and her position," Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., told "Fox News Sunday." ''But she's not the problem. The problem is the president of the United States," who, McCain said, misled the public on terrorist involvement.

Rice is widely seen as President Barack Obama's top pick to replace Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton as the nation's top diplomat. But Rice's reputation took a serious hit this fall when she relied on unclassified talking points provided by the intelligence community that portrayed the attack in Benghazi, Libya, as a spontaneous assault by a mob angered by an anti-Muslim video posted on YouTube.

Intelligence officials quickly amended their assessment to conclude the attack hadn't been related to other film protests across the Middle East. But that revised narrative was slow to reach the public, prompting Republicans to allege a White House cover-up ahead of the Nov. 6 election.

The attack killed Ambassador Chris Stevens, a State Department computer specialist and two former Navy SEALs who were working as contract security guards.

McCain's remarks were in contrast to his previous stance that Rice wasn't qualified to replace Clinton, who is expected to step down soon, and that he would do "whatever is necessary" to block Rice's possible nomination.

Sen. Lindsey Graham, McCain's close friend and colleague on the Senate Armed Services Committee, told ABC's "This Week" he still suspects the White House intentionally glossed over obvious terrorist links in the attack to keep voters from questioning Obama's handling of national security.

But instead of repeating his prior assertion that he was "dead set" against a Rice promotion, Graham suggested he looked forward to hearing her out. If Rice were nominated, "there will be a lot of questions asked of her about this event and others," said Graham, R-S.C.

The subtle shift in GOP tenor on Rice could be the result of internal grumblings on how far to take party opposition. Democrats picked up extra Senate seats in the election to maintain their narrow majority, making it that much harder for the remaining 45 Republicans to block the president's nominees.

One senior GOP Senate aide said Sunday that Republicans hadn't united against Rice and were not convinced she was worth going after. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the aide was not authorized to speak publicly on internal GOP deliberations.

(AP) ? A former space shuttle commander whose twin brother is married to former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords will attempt the longest spaceflight ever by an American.

NASA astronaut Scott Kelly and Russian cosmonaut Mikhail Kornienko will spend an entire year aboard the International Space Station beginning in 2015.

Both countries' space agencies announced the names of the two veteran spacefliers on Monday. The extended mission was approved almost two months ago to provide a medical foundation for future missions around the moon, as well as far-flung trips to asteroids and Mars.

Both men already have lived aboard the space station for six months. NASA wanted experienced space station astronauts to streamline the amount of training necessary for a one-year stint. Officials had said the list of candidates was very short. They will begin training next year.

"Their skills and previous experience aboard the space station align with the mission's requirements," Bill Gerstenmaier, head of human exploration for NASA, said in a statement. "The one-year increment will expand the bounds of how we live and work in space and will increase our knowledge regarding the effects of microgravity on humans as we prepare for future missions beyond low-Earth orbit."

Kelly's identical twin brother, Mark Kelly, retired from the astronaut corps last year and moved to Tucson, Ariz., his wife's hometown. The former congresswoman was critically wounded in an assassination attempt in January 2011, while Scott Kelly was living aboard the space station.

NASA said neither crew member was available Monday to comment and that news conferences would be held next week to outline the mission.

Astronauts normally spend about four to six months aboard the space station. The longest an American lived there was seven months, several years back.

Russia, though, will continue to hold the world space endurance record.

Four cosmonauts spent at least a year aboard the old Mir space station. A Russian physician, Valery Polyakov, logged nearly 15 continuous months there in the mid-1990s.

Boris Morukov, head of the Moscow-based Institute for Medical and Biological Problems, Russia's main space medicine research center, told the Interfax news agency that communications and food rations for Kelly and Kornienko may be limited during their yearlong mission to better simulate interplanetary travel.

Kelly and Kornienko will launch aboard a Russian rocket from Kazakhstan. Americans must buy seats on Russian spacecraft now that NASA's shuttles have retired to museums, until private U.S. companies have vessels capable of carrying human passengers. That's still four or five years off.

Kelly is a 48-year-old, divorced Navy captain with two daughters. Kornienko, 52, a rocket engineer, is married with a daughter.

"We have chosen the most responsible, skilled and enthusiastic crew members to expand space exploration, and we have full confidence in them," Russian Space Agency chief Vladimir Popovkin said in the announcement.

Euro zone, IMF to seek Greece deal, debt write-off main problem

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Euro zone finance ministers and the International Monetary Fund will seek to unfreeze the second bailout package for Greece on Monday, but they first need to agree if some of the official loans to Athens might eventually be forgiven to cut Greek debt.

Euro zone ministers and their deputies have held numerous meetings and conference calls over the last two weeks to decide how Greek debt, seen at almost 190 percent of GDP next year, could be cut to a more sustainable 120 percent in 8-10 years.

Without agreement on how to reduce the debt, euro zone ministers and the IMF do not want to resume payments of loan tranches to Athens -- even though Greece has met all the conditions -- because they have no guarantee on whether the need for emergency financing will ever end.

The key question is: Can Greek debt become sustainable without the euro zone writing off some of the loans to Athens?

So far, the options for debt reduction under consideration include reducing interest on already extended bilateral loans to Greece from the current 150 basis points above financing costs.

How much lower is not yet decided -- France and Italy would like to reduce the rate to 30 basis points (bps), while Germany and some other countries insist on a 90 bps margin.

Another option, which could cut Greek debt by almost 17 percent of GDP, is to defer interest payments on loans to Greece from the EFSF, a temporary bailout fund, by 10 years.

The European Central Bank could forego profits on its Greek bond portfolio, bought at a deep discount, cutting the debt pile by a further 4.6 percent by 2020, a document prepared for the ministers' talks last week showed.

Not all euro zone central banks are prepared to forego their profits, however, the German Bundesbank among them.

Greece could also buy back its privately-held bonds on the market at a deep discount, with gains from the operation depending on the scope and price.

But the preparatory document from last week said that the 120 percent target could not be reached in 2020, only two years later, unless the ministers accept losses on their loans to Athens, provide additional financing or force private creditors into selling Greek debt at a discount.

The latest analysis for the ministers showed the debt could come down to 125 percent of GDP in 2020, one euro zone official with insight into the talks said.

FORGIVING OFFICIAL LOANS?

To cut the debt more boldly, the IMF wants the euro zone to forgive Greece some of the official loans, in what is called Official Sector Involvement (OSI) in EU jargon.

This is an idea that several countries, including Germany, the Netherlands, Finland and Slovakia, firmly reject.

On Monday, the biggest battle is likely to be over just that.

"OSI is at the core of the problems with reaching a deal," one euro zone official with insight into the talks said.

German central bank governor Jens Weidmann has suggested that Greece could "earn" a reduction in debt it owes to euro zone governments in a few years if it diligently implements all the agreed reforms. The European Commission backs that view.

German paper Welt am Sonntag said on Sunday that euro zone ministers were considering a write-down of official loans for Greece from 2015, but gave no sources and a euro zone official said such an option was never seriously discussed.

European Central Bank executive board member Joerg Asmussen told the German Bild paper on Sunday that a write-down on Greek debt should not be part of the deal, echoing repeated statements from German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble who said it would be illegal.

"It will be touch-and-go if we get a deal on Greece on Monday," a senior euro zone official said. "Euro zone countries have made concessions worth a lot of money already, so it is difficult to see how this can move even further."

French Finance Minister Pierre Moscovici said on Sunday evening that euro zone ministers made big progress to reach a common position during at a conference call on Saturday in preparation for their talks with the IMF on Monday.

"I will go with a firm determination, with a mandate from the president and prime minister, to reach a conclusion," Moscovici said. "We are very close to a solution."

Moscovici mentioned the reduction of interest on bilateral loans, foregoing ECB profits on Greek bonds and the debt buy-back as the options that would need to be applied for a deal as well as additional financing for Athens to keep it funded until 2016, rather than only until 2014.

'Two and a Half Men' star calls show 'filth'

Matt Hoyle / CBS / Warner Bros

Angus T. Jones, Ashton Kutcher and Jon Cryer star in "Two and a Half Men."

By Jordan Zakarin and Lesley Goldberg, The Hollywood Reporter

At this point, it might be best to turn "Two and a Half Men"?into a reality show.?Less than two years removed from?Charlie Sheen's infamous meltdown that saw him removed from the CBS?Chuck Lorre?comedy, the show's young star,?Angus T. Jones?-- the half-man in the show's title -- has blasted the series as "filth" and suggested that people should stop watching.

More from THR: Miley Cyrus to Romance Jake on 'Two and a Half Men'

"Jake from 'Two and a Half Men'?means nothing. He is a non-existent character," Jones says in a video for the?Forerunner Christian Church, which is based in Fremont, Calif. "If you watch 'Two and a Half Men,' please stop watching 'Two and a Half Men.' I'm on 'Two and a Half Men'?and I don't want to be on it. Please stop watching it and filling your head with filth. People say it?s just entertainment. Do some research on the effects of television and your brain, and I promise you you?ll have a decision to make when it comes to television, especially with what you watch."

Jones continues with the testimonial, intimating that the show is part of the plan of "the enemy" -- presumably Satan. He adds, "If I am doing any harm, I don't want to be here. I don't want to be contributing to the enemy's plan ... You cannot be a true God-fearing person and be on a television show like that. I know I can't. I'm not OK with what I'm learning, what the bible says and being on that television show."

Photos from THR: Broadcast TV's Returning Shows for 2012-13

Jones, 19,?gave a testimony?in October at the Voice of Prophecy in Los Angeles, where he attends services.

Jones earns about $350,000 per episode; in May he received a salary bump -- along with co-stars?Jon Cryer?and?Ashton Kutcher?-- when?Men?was renewed for a 10th season.

Jones' comments mark the latest brouhaha for "Men," which in addition to the Sheen debacle also saw former showrunner?Lee Aronsohn?step down after he came under fire for comments he made to?THR?about female-driven shows at a Toronto screenwriting conference.

"Two and a Half Men"?producer Warner Bros. Television declined comment.

Mortgage Refinancing and Debt Consolidation Loans Now Made ...

Simpsonville, SC (PRWEB) November 16, 2012

Finding the right loan for the right price can be a difficult process, especially in the current condition of the credit populous. Credit debt is higher than ever, and loan corporations are either shutting people out, or doing their best to imprison clients with staggering fees and interest rates. Before attempting to refinance a mortgage, or purchase a home, shoppers must be sure to have the best possible loan provider. And if they, like so many others are attempting to dig their way out of loan or credit debt, it is infinitely more essential to be secure with an excellent lender to keep oneself from falling into even more debt.

Debt consolidating can be a useful tool in a battle against debt or outstanding loans. If someone is trying to handle multiple loans with varying interest rates and fees, then consider debt consolidation. The concept of debt consolidation is to take a loan to pay off multiple loans, after this they are left with but one loan. This also means that one can negotiate lower interest rates and secure a fixed interest rate that better suits their needs and budget.

All of these concepts boil down to one major issue however. Most good lenders reject any without an excellent credit score, something most who need a loan don?t possess. There are many lenders that advertise loans distributed to those with bad credit, but in the end reject clients or create much worse debt.

Whether one needs to escape the crushing weight of credit debt, or if they are trying to refinance their mortgage or purchase a home with a loan, one can only succeed once they have an able loan company to back them up. A company that holds both respect and care for its clients as a priority is hard to find, but that is exactly what loandepot.com claims to be, and frankly, there isn?t evidence to claim otherwise. This is why Valley Auto Loans has decided to help spread the word of this great company.

The Proper Way To Keep Your Back Pain In Hand | health and ...

Each and every year, doctors all around the globe receive patients that are suffering from back stiffness. The agony has a bearing on areas of the back and also causes agony in surrounding areas,eg arms, legs, hand, and feet. The following piece will give you tips to stop back pain and avoid a doctor visit.

Maintain correct posture to stop back pain. It is important to stand, sit and walk correctly so the muscles and ligaments don't pull your vertebrae out of alignment and cause agony. Your head, neck and back should be correctly aligned properly at all points to help stop any pain.

Placing moist heat on the effected area of your back is likely to help you manage your pain. This technique has been utilized for many years and has proven to be quite helpful in the management of agony suffered in several parts of the body. Use it straight to the skin and the stress should be reduced.

Efficient, back-friendly chairs are critical for avoiding back pain, particularly if you expend a lot of time in a seated position. Confirm your ordinary chair is well-fitted to you and provides the support that your spine wants. Do not forget to pay attention to your sitting posture too , so you get the complete benefit of a labor-saving chair.

If you suffer from issues with the cartilage in your spine, you can avoid pain by avoiding sitting for long periods. Sitting compresses the disks in your spine, because it causes your stomach to press backwards. Try reclining, or using a lumbar cushion if you've got to sit, and take frequent breaks to stand up.

Sleep on your side in order to forestall and alleviate back trouble. Additionally , place a pillow between your knees to help in keeping your backbone in proper alignment. Sleeping on your stomach or back may lead to back pain, but sleeping on your side with knees a little bent is helpful.

If you sit for long periods of time, keep your feet barely elevated on a stool or on a pile of books. Doing this is going to help keep your back aligned properly and keep pressure from creating. Make sure to take breaks, as well and work out those muscles.

Try a massage for back pain. A delicate massage may help to ease back pain, relaxing tight muscles and gets the blood flowing. Even if you can't see a professional masseuse, you can give yourself a mini-massage. Put your hands on your waist, and place your thumbs at either side of the backbone. Press gradually, moving up, down, and around in a small circle. If you find a tender area, pay special attention to it. Work gradually up each side of your spine, an in. at a time. A good option would be to employ a quality massage chair.

In conclusion, doctors worldwide receive patients who suffer from back stiffness each year. Back stiffness starts in the back and travels to other areas of the body, producing a terrible experience. If you remember the tips from this piece, you can prevent back stiffness and stave off a mandatory doctor visit for treatment.

Home Ownership Possible After Foreclosure or Short Sale ...

?There?s a new term in real estate to know ? boomerang buyers. This is the term the Wall Street Journal has coined for people who have gone through a foreclosure or a short sale and are ready to be a homeowner again. They have come through the rough patch and are back in the market. Over three-quarters of a million foreclosed borrowers are eligible to apply for an FHA mortgage. It?s not an automatic thing, and depending on whether you?ve gone through a short sale or a foreclosure and who the lender is, there are different rules to follow, but the point is, it?s possible.

In either case, there is going to be a waiting period and a minimum credit score to qualify. In general, a short sale has less of an impact than a foreclosure. Late payments cause the most damage, and since foreclosures take longer than short sales, the damage is more dramatic. Also, a ?settled? debt is less damaging than a ?defaulted? debt.

Prison Planet.com ? Aspartame-Cancer Link Exposed: Increasing ...

Elizabeth Renter
Prisonplanet.com
Nov 24, 2012

There have been several studies over the years that established a link between?aspartame consumption and cancer risk. But, these studies were frequently criticized as being too small, only capturing a short period of time, and otherwise not living up to strict scientific standards. A new study, however, addresses these concerns and substantiates what the previous ones already said: that aspartame in diet soda can increase your risk of certain types of cancer, exponentially. It seems the aspartame-cancer link has been exposed?again.

The Aspartame-Cancer Link

Scientists looked at data from the Nurses? Health Study and the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study for a period of 22 years, including over 77,000 female study subjects and nearly 48,000 males. In all, the giant study looked at ?2,278,396 person-years of data?, the most of all previous aspartame studies.

Study participants were asked about their diets every two years. In prior studies, questions about aspartame were only asked once, opening them up to error and criticism. What this study found, however, is frightening.

One can of diet soda each day can increase leukemia risk in men and women by 42 percent, increase multiple myeloma risk in men by?102 percent, and increase the risk of non-Hodgkin lymphoma by 31 percent in men.

The results are frightening, but not surprising. Though previous research was criticized for not being scientifically sound?the findings were similar.?Another study focusing on the aspartame-cancer link found that of 48 rats experimented on, up to?67% of all female rats?developed tumors roughly the size of golf balls or larger. The male population also suffered, with 21% of the males developing similar cancerous growths.

What?s possibly even more concerning is that aspartame is created using genetically modified bacteria. Revealing how aspartame is made, an article from? The Independent reports that both a Monsanto source and a Monsanto spokesperson admits that aspartame creation process did in fact involve genetically modified bacteria.

?We have two strains of bacteria ? one is traditionally modified and one is genetically modified,? said the source. ?It?s got a modified enzyme. It has one amino acid different.?

Stay Away

Although there are other sources of aspartame, diet soda remains the most popular. If you were ever wondering, ?is diet soda bad for you?, the answer is a sound ?yes?. In the United States, we consume an estimated 5,250 tons of aspartame each year, of which 86% is in the form of diet sodas.

  • A d v e r t i s e m e n t

Recognizing the dangers of diet soda, many people limit themselves to just one can each day. But this latest research shows that one can is enough to do significant damage. And, switching back to a sugared soda isn?t any better?researchers found men drinking one or more regular sodas saw a 66% increase in non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

What?s the solution? Quit drinking soda. If you?re in it for the caffeine, try green tea and it?s many benefits or even coffee. If you prefer cold and refreshing, have iced tea.

Changing your habits takes motivation and dedication (follow-thru). This research showing the aspartame-cancer link yet again should provide the motivation, but it?s up to you to take steps towards reclaiming your health.
