5 best Steven Soderbergh movies (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? Steven Soderbergh has made every kind of film imaginable, from fizzy comedies to penetrating dramas, from experimental indies with miniscule budgets to star-studded extravaganzas. But he always seems willing to try anything, and that's what makes him so vital and exciting.

Soderbergh's latest, "Contagion," follows a deadly virus as it spreads worldwide, claiming millions of victims. It gives us a chance to roll up our sleeves ? and wash our hands ? and pick five of the director's best films:

? "Traffic" (2000): Soderbergh won the Academy Award for best director ? even though he was competing against himself with another film on this list, "Erin Brockovich" ? for his sprawling depiction of the international drug trade. Not a moment of this 147-minute epic rings false. Soderbergh juggles several complex, intertwined story lines and a huge, big-name ensemble and makes it all look effortless. Serving as his own cinematographer as usual under the name Peter Andrews, Soderbergh explores the pervasiveness of drugs ? and the futility of government efforts to stop them ? through a hyperreality, one that's raw and edgy at times, dreamy and almost hallucinatory at others. Michael Douglas, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Don Cheadle and an Oscar-winning Benicio Del Toro are among the top-notch cast.

? "Out of Sight" (1998): Soderbergh captures just the right tone every time, even as he encompasses a variety of genres. Based on the Elmore Leonard novel, this story of the improbable connection that forms between a career bank robber (George Clooney) and the federal marshal who's after him (Jennifer Lopez) ranges from buddy comedy to gripping suspense to sexy, noir-style romance. Clooney and Lopez have crazy, flirty chemistry as they exchange banter in Scott Frank's script that couldn't be tighter or snappier. They're each at the height of their charisma, and together they're irresistible. The excellent supporting cast includes Ving Rhames, Albert Brooks, Cheadle (again), Steve Zahn and Catherine Keener.

? "The Limey" (1999): Terence Stamp is just a complete bad-ass as a British ex-con who travels to Los Angeles to investigate the death of his daughter. His performance is powerful and without question, but Soderbergh provides an intriguing contrast by telling the story in fragments, in overlapping wisps of memories and dialogue, which contributes to the air of mystery and keeps us guessing. Stamp prowls a blistering, bleached-out LA, a mix of downtown warehouses and cheap apartments, shimmering beaches and staggering hillside mansions. He's hunting a slick, laid-back record producer, played perfectly by Peter Fonda, who was involved with this much-younger girl when she died. Soderbergh seamlessly blends these actors' aura of `60s cool with his own contemporary style.

? "Erin Brockovich" (2000): Soderbergh takes a daunting and seemingly dry topic ? the true story of the industrial pollution of a town's water supply ? and turns it into an inspiring tale of redemption that's warm, human, funny and even sexy. That largely has to do with Julia Roberts, who earned a best-actress Oscar for playing the title character, a single mother of three who takes on a massive class-action lawsuit while working as a file clerk for her lawyer (Albert Finney). Roberts radiates sass and smarts with her clingy clothes and dirty mouth, and she's an absolute hoot. Aaron Eckhart counters that, bringing sweetness and tenderness to the film as the biker next door who cares for Erin's kids.

? "Ocean's 11" (2001): His remake of the 1960 Rat Pack caper is perfect escapist entertainment: fun and fast-paced, slick and spontaneous, light and full of laughs. Clooney, Roberts, Matt Damon and Brad Pitt are clearly having a ball bouncing off each other, never taking themselves too seriously despite their Hollywood heavyweight status. Clooney stars in the Frank Sinatra role as Danny Ocean, who amasses a rag-tag crew of cons to pull off his latest heist: a robbery of Las Vegas' biggest casinos on the night of a heavyweight championship fight, when he knows the high rollers will be in town and the vault will hold about $150 million. The fact that this is preposterous, yet goes so smoothly, is only part of why it's such a kick.

Australian man claims to have bomb in standoff (AP)

SYDNEY ? Australian police cordoned off a Sydney building Tuesday in a tense standoff with a man who claimed to have a bomb, smashed a window and issued threats from a lawyer's office where he holed up with his teenage daughter.

The daughter appeared to be well, and police spent several hours trying to negotiate with the man, who claimed to have explosives in his backpack and appeared to be in his 50s, Police Assistant Commissioner Denis Clifford said. Their identities were not immediately disclosed.

Police said the man issued several demands but declined to reveal details, and said they had not yet established his motive. They evacuated the building, kept onlookers 100 yards (meter) away and were seen entering with at least one automatic weapon. Witnesses said other buildings also were evacuated.

"We're working through those demands with him and we're doing the best we can to secure a peaceful resolution," Clifford told reporters. "The fact that he's there and he's made certain threats is obviously of concern to us."

Australian broadcasters showed footage of the man looking from a second-floor window shirtless and wearing the kind of wig worn by judges and lawyers in Australian courts. At one point he spat on the wig.

He later swung a glass bottle like a hammer to smash a plate-sized hole in the office window. He yelled through the hole and threw the bottle, then a telephone handset, which was left dangling by its cord.

Clifford said the girl, who was apparently in her early teens, appeared to be doing well.

"We don't believe there's any specific threat against the girl, but obviously we'd like to secure her release," he said. "The concern is that she's in a situation where we've got somebody with a backpack ? we don't know exactly what's in that backpack so we have to assume that what he's saying is true."

Betty Hor said she was working at the reception desk at the lawyers' offices when the man approached Tuesday morning and asked to see someone whom Hor had never heard of. The man went upstairs briefly then returned to the reception desk and repeated his request. She repeated that she had never heard of the man he was looking for.

Hor, who spoke to reporters after evacuating the building, said that the man threw a book on her desk and told her to call the unknown man and the state attorney-general's department and "tell them I've got a bomb in my backpack."

Hor called police as the man walked upstairs to a lawyer's office with the girl, who called him "Dad."

Hor said he seemed frustrated and angry. She said she had never seen him before.

Robert Hoffman, who works in a neighboring office block, said police had evacuated his and other buildings in the vicinity. Police moved people at least 100 yards (meters) from the building where the man was holed up, Hoffman said.

Five ambulances and two fire trucks were standing by at the scene.

Clifford said he did not believe that the standoff had anything to do with the family court that adjoins the building.

Bitter family court cases have triggered some high-profile crimes recently in Australia, including the murder of a 4-year-old girl whose father threw her more than 260 feet (80 meters) from a bridge in the southern city of Melbourne in 2009.

The father, Arthur Freeman, 37, was sentenced in April to life in prison after a jury rejected his plea of innocence due to mental illness.

Tuesday's standoff came a month after an extortionist broke into a Sydney home and fastened a fake bomb around the neck of a millionaire's teenage daughter. She spent 10 terrifying hours with the device strapped to her before police determined it was harmless and freed her.

A man has been arrested in the United States in connection with the incident and is awaiting extradition.

Bodycount Review | VideoGameWriters - Video Game Writers

Bodycount?is a frustrating game. The spiritual sequel to?Black?(a 2006 shooter by Criterion Games) tries to recapture that exhilarating feeling of shooting powerful guns at hordes of enemies ? right down to highlighting a single assault rifle on its box art, as Black did before it ? and in several ways it succeeds. The frustration stems from seeing so much potential for a memorable game, and watching that potential dissolve under the weight of a half-baked experience.

0 Review: Bodycount

By their very nature, games tend to be repetitive affairs, which is why a compelling narrative can be vital to our enjoyment of them. If story is absent, alternate incentives takes its place; whether it?s decimating a previous personal high score in Geometry Wars, or competing online in Call of Duty, something must motivate us to continue forward.

What?s My Motivation?

Current generation shooters have strived to offer a variety of gameplay beyond mere running and gunning (even if it is stale turret sequences and misplaced platforming), as well as spin a tale that keeps us interested in travelling from point A to point B, continuously blasting bad guys in the face. Bodycount insists on feeling like a minimalist, throwback shooter, carried by its gameplay mechanics and an orgy of explosions that would give Michael Bay an inferiority complex. Sadly, the game is polluted with a lazy, non-existent story, a confusing cover system, and some criminal omissions to the overall gunplay and the weapons themselves.

The motivation for players to push forward in Bodycount certainly doesn?t come from character development. Your faceless, silent hero is an operative of ?The Network,? tasked with infiltrating and destroying the underground lair of ?The Target.? This isn?t lazy paraphrasing ? the plot doesn?t get much deeper. It?s as if the developers shoehorned in the story at the last second to justify the level design (which is inspired by equal parts Brink and Tron: Evolution). The in-game radio chatter between you and your command center only serves to give generic back-story, and general guidance to reach your next objective.

BODYCOUNT Screenshot 02 17071 570x320 Review: Bodycount

...and Michael Bay wept...

What Bodycount must thrive on, then, is its action. Lest you think I?m being too negative, there are some intensely satisfying moments during the roughly 10 hour playthrough. Paramount among these are the explosions; around every corner is something red and flammable to shoot, obliterating nearby enemies and justifying that 5.1 surround system purchase. You can frequently trigger chain reactions, which topple entire buildings and result in gratified smirks. The destructible environments also lend to tense moments as enemies chip away at your cover; walls and fences chip realistically and allow for alternate paths. Credit deservedly goes to Codemasters for implementing this when other high-profile shooters like Modern Warfare 3 still can?t be bothered to.

Another feather in Bodycount?s cap: The weapons Bodycount?offers all feel fantastic to fire, with realistic recoil and action, particularly the Super90 shotgun which sends nearby enemies reeling backward. The silenced P226 hand gun nearly transported me back to Goldeneye 007 on the N64; it is insanely satisfying to pull off headshots with. Toward the endgame you?ll receive two high-tech weapons like the Kaluka, an assault rifle with the firing rate of an SMG. Suffice to say, it will clear a room with ease.

Hope you?re a no-scope pro?

Bodycount ships with an armament of only 9 guns (as well as generic grenades and mines). However, it isn?t the included arsenal that ruins the experience; rather it?s the noticeable lack of staple weapons like sniper rifles and rocket launchers. It is the baffling omission of scopes, and the inability to earn or equip any weapon upgrades or accessories that sours the entire experience. You may be a killing machine, but when snipers are picking you off from 150 yards away and you can barely make out their figure, things turn from frustrating to seriously flawed. When shooting guns is the primary strength of your game, you must deliver a large assortment of weapons that are fun to use and cater to different play styles; and at this stage there is no excuse for the lack of upgrades and customization.

Sequence 02 175271 570x320 Review: Bodycount

Codemasters' EGO engine makes explosions - and resulting carnage - satisfying

Controls are equally confusing. As is the standard, you pull the left trigger to look down your sight while aiming, but doing so renders your character immobile. To walk while looking down the sights, you have to squeeze the trigger only halfway. Maintaining that position during intense firefights borders on impossible. In every way, the developers are screaming ?in Bodycount, you run up to people and shoot them point-blank. That?s how you play our game or GTFO.? Supplementing this argument is a poorly conceived cover system that utilizes the left analog stick to duck and lean, and suicidal enemies who insist on standing out in the open (and conveniently next to explosive barrels), or running up to you in true bullet-sponge fashion.

Bodycount does offer a temporary diversion in the form of multiplayer deathmatches, but the online mode offers no leveling system, and recycles the exact same maps from the campaign. And again, there are expansive areas ideal for scoped weapons ? but since there are none, it devolves into close-quarters bloodbaths. It?s uninteresting and uninspired, and does nothing to justify a $60 price tag.

?Bodycount Mode? delivers the most fun, wherein you and a buddy team up to beat back an onslaught of enemies. Like Horde Mode in Gears of War 2, the challenge of fighting against increasingly difficult odds with a friend is satisfying. Unlike Horde Mode, its welcome is worn out all too quickly.

BODYCOUNT Screenshot 02 367931 570x320 Review: Bodycount

Every screenshot given to press has explosions. This is not coincidence.

The Bottom Line

Thus, the enjoyment present in Bodycount is found primarily in the realistic feel of the small assortment of guns, and the wild explosions and destruction around every corner. Unfortunately, it?s not enough to recommend Bodycount for anything more than a weekend rental ? and only if you?ve become bored with Crysis 2, Black Ops, Battlefield: Bad Company 2, Homefront, Brink, Bulletstorm, or any of the vastly more memorable and diverse shooters on the market.

A weakened Lee still poses flood threat in South (AP)

SAUCIER, Miss. ? While Lee's winds have lost some of their punch, forecasters warn that its slow-moving rain clouds pose a worse flooding threat to inland areas with hills or mountains in the coming days.

The massive storm system dumped more than a foot of rain in New Orleans and spawned tornadoes elsewhere before it weakened to a tropical depression Sunday night. Its remnants were expected to continue to march to the northeast.

Areas of Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi near the coast reported scattered wind damage and flooding, while New Orleans levees and pumping system were doing their jobs.

National Hurricane Center specialist Robbie Berg said Lee's flash flood threat could be more severe as the rain moves from the flatter Gulf region into the rugged Appalachians.

Closer to the Gulf, the water is "just going to sit there a couple of days," he said. "Up in the Appalachians you get more threat of flash floods."

The threat of tornadoes spawned by Lee's remnants was diminishing early Monday, said Fred Zeigler, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service. But he said coastal flooding would remain a concern.

No deaths had been directly attributed to Lee, though a body boarder in Galveston, Texas, drowned after being pulled out to sea in heavy surf churned up by Lee. The Coast Guard was also searching Sunday for a teenage boy swept away by rough surf off Gulf Shores, Ala. A man in Mississippi also suffered non-life-threatening injuries when authorities said he was struck by lightning that traveled through a phone line.

The vast, soggy system spent hours during the weekend hovering in the northernmost Gulf of Mexico before its center finally crossed into Louisiana west of New Orleans, pelting a wide swath of coastline.

On Sunday night, the National Hurricane Center said Lee's center was about 55 miles (90 kilometers) west-northwest of McComb, Mississippi and moving east-northeast at 7 mph (11 kph).

Some of the damage on the Gulf Coast, where tropical storms are an almost yearly event, appeared to come from spinoff tornadoes that touched down in southern Mississippi and Alabama.

Dena Hickman said her home in Saucier, Miss., was damaged by what she believes was a tornado. It happened too fast for her to get her 12-year-old daughter, who uses a wheelchair, out of her bed and into a safer place.

"I laid on top of her to try to protect her. It all happened so quickly I couldn't do anything else," she said Sunday.

Her family weathered the storm, but it damaged shingles on their roof, flipped a 34-foot camper on its side, ripped off the roof of a cinderblock building that houses a water pump and pulled the doors off of a metal shop building. The contents of a neighbor's pulverized trailer were scattered across the Hickmans' yard.

In New Orleans, rainfall totals approached 14 inches in some neighborhoods by Sunday night. Downpours caused some street flooding Saturday and Sunday, but pumps were sucking up the water and sending it into Lake Pontchartrain. The mayor's office said all 24 of the sewage and water board pumps were working at capacity.

Flooding in Livingston Parish forced an estimated 200 families from their homes, said Mark Benton, parish director of the Office of Emergency Preparedness.

A possible tornado struck southern Mobile County in Alabama, snapping oak limbs, knocking out power and damaging at least one home. No injuries were reported, but the blast awoke Frank Ledbetter and ripped up the sign for his art gallery.

"It just got louder and louder and louder. I woke my wife up and said, `It's a tornado.' We just dove into the closet in the bedroom," he said.

In Gulf Shores, Ala., three teenagers were swept out by a rip current, and two people who tried to help them also became distressed, said Maj. Anthony Lowery of the Baldwin County Sheriff's Office. Four eventually made it out, but the Coast Guard was still searching for a 16-year-old boy Sunday night.

Witness Charlie Camp saw two teenage boys getting swept away, and their parents trying in vain to help them. Lifeguards eventually came to their aid.

"The waves were just terrible," he said.

Mississippi Emergency Management Agency spokesman Greg Flynn said flooding was reported in Mississippi's six southernmost counties, with some homes flooded with an inch or two of water in coastal Jackson County. Shelters were opened in Jackson and Hancock counties, but few people were using them.

Rupert Lacy, the emergency management director in coastal Harrison County, said at least five homes were damaged there by a suspected tornado. There were no immediate reports of injuries from the wind.

In Lafitte, La., workers and residents were busy sandbagging around homes to stop water pushed up from Barataria Bay by tides and wind.

The small town, which runs along the edge of the Intracoastal Canal and the bay, was under a mandatory evacuation order, but many people ignored it.

"A few more left this morning," Jefferson Parish President John Young said. "The sheriff had to get a few people out using his high-water vehicles."

Marc McAllister, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Jackson, said Lee could drop 4 to 8 inches of rain as it pushes across Alabama on Tuesday and Wednesday and into Tennessee, Georgia and North Carolina. The storm is expected to produce less rain the farther north it gets.

What's Your Ideal Sales Process? - Small Business Trends

I?write quite frequently about sales and how important it is for everyone to be able to articulate what they do and sell.? Isn?t it unfortunate that the? image of a hyped-up, intrusive, snarky, used car salesman still permeates our perceptions? Why is this image still so prevalent? Because of that ?predatory??salesperson, the one who just sells something to someone for the sport of it, many people lack adequate respect for the sales profession.

Sleezy Salesman

And profession it is. In fact, professional sales is becoming part of the degree curriculum of more and more colleges and universities. I have great respect for high-level professional salespeople. I was one for 24 years in broadcast radio. In many ways, sales today is very different than it was even five years ago!

Developing the Process That Works for You

When was the last time you had someone ring your doorbell to sell you something, or just stroll into your office or place of business to sell anything other than flowers?

I found a great article from Business News Daily, ?How to Conquer the Fear of Selling,? by Dave Mattson, CEO of Sandler Training. In it, he talks about selling as a science in developing an ?ideal sales process? and says anyone can be trained to have one.

I believe that. Over the years I have hired, trained and worked with salespeople from many walks of life. The ones that believe in what they sell, love sales and work on their own unique process are the ones that do the best long term.

Today?s entrepreneur and small business owner must embrace a ?sales mentality? to succeed. The sales process has changed very little over the years. It?s still fundamentally about building that? ?like, know and trust? with people so that you can move your goods and services, to help them, for a fair price.

Don?t get intimidated by this. Rather, get empowered by the opportunities there are to:

  • match their needs with your solutions
  • consummate? (close) the sale
  • provide customer service and retention

When you think about it, today offers us all so many more ways to accelerate this.

Passion has power

If you love what you do, love what you sell, and love how it can benefit and has benefited others,? then simply focus on that ?selling approach? and make it your ideal sales process. There is power in that passion!
