RIM BlackBerry Style 9670 (Boost Mobile)

Flip smartphones are far from a common form factor. But the BlackBerry Style 9670 actually pulls this unusual shape off. We already liked the Sprint version of this cell phone; fortunately, the Boost Mobile version is just about as good. Depending on how you weigh Boost's cheaper plans versus higher up-front phone price, the Boost version can be a better deal as well.?

Design and Call Quality
This phone isn't much different than the Sprint version, so you may want to read that review first. I'll touch on the basics but focus mainly on the differences here. The Style is like most other flip phones, except wider; it measures 3.8 by 2.4 by 0.7 inches (HWD) and weighs 4.6 ounces. It looks and feels great; this is one sharp phone, and the name is apt. The external 240-by-320-pixel screen displays a nice analog clock graphic, but aside from that, some status indicators, and too-short email previews, it?s a wasted opportunity. Inside, there?s a 2.7-inch, 360-by-400-pixel LCD a tenth of an inch shorter than the new Bold 9930?s display (though the Bold 9930 offers higher resolution). The QWERTY keyboard is a little flatter than RIM's other designs, but it works well for reasonably fast typing.?

The BlackBerry Style is a dual-band EV-DO Rev A (850/1900 MHz) device with 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi. Voice quality was excellent. While the Style didn?t go nearly as loud as some other models from Research In Motion, I liked the warm, full tone in the earpiece. Callers uniformly said I sounded good. I also saw solid EV-DO signal during the review, in an area of Massachusetts that?s not known for its Sprint coverage. Calls sounded clear through an Aliph Jawbone Era Bluetooth headset ($129, 4 stars). The Nuance-powered voice dialing worked fine over Bluetooth. The speakerphone sounded full and went quite loud. Battery life was short for a BlackBerry at just 4 hours and 24 minutes of talk time.

Hardware, Apps, and Messaging
Running BlackBerry OS 6 rather than the newer version 7, the Style isn?t the most powerful BlackBerry. With its 528MHz CPU, it?s slower than 624MHz and 1.2GHz Bolds and Torches. Most of the time, this isn?t a big deal. Having just reviewed a BlackBerry Bold 9930 and 9900, I may have noticed some sluggishness in the Style 9670, but most users will be fine with its speed.?

Every BlackBerry short of a Bold 9930 or Torch 9810 comes with a terrible browser. Thankfully, Boost thought of this and preloads Bolt, which is much better, along with AP Mobile, Facebook, and Twitter clients. The YouTube icon is just a shortcut to the site?s Web page, though. BlackBerry's universal inbox aggregates everything from email and IM to direct messages from Twitter and Facebook. As long as you?re not expecting smooth Microsoft Exchange sync?for that, you?ll need a BlackBerry server at work?you?ll like the Style?s messaging capabilities.?

The Boost version also lacks Sprint?s various multimedia apps, including Sprint TV and the Sprint Music Store. You still get TeleNav GPS Navigator, which offers voice-enabled, turn-by-turn directions for $9.99 per month. Speaking of pricing, while the Style 9670 costs more up front, you?ll come out ahead over time thanks to Boost?s cheaper unlimited plans, which range from just $50 to $60 per month and become as cheap as $35 after 18 months of on-time payments.

The less said about BlackBerry App World, the better. While there are a few decent apps for BlackBerries, the field is so much thinner than the array of apps for other smartphones that third-party apps should be considered a pleasant surprise, not a core part of the experience here. If you want to play the games your friends are playing on their smartphones, this isn't the phone for you.

Multimedia, Camera, and Conclusions
Like all recent BlackBerrys, the Style is a good music player and a so-so video player. The standard-size 3.5mm headphone jack and side-mounted microSD card slots are helpful, but you must pull the battery cover before you can get a fingernail under the memory slot door. RIM throws in an 8GB card, and there?s 215MB of free internal storage. But the free BlackBerry Desktop Software for Windows and Mac computers is the best way to sync your media with the Style 9670. Music tracks sounded clear through Samsung Modus HM6450 Bluetooth headphones?($99, 4 stars).

The 5-megapixel continuous auto-focus camera has no flash. The Style 9670 suffers from the same problem a lot of flip phones do: it?s easy to cover the sensor with your finger by accident. Otherwise, it takes decent photos, with dark shadows and indoor, lower-light noise being the primary issues. Sometimes it waits a second or two before it snaps a photo. Recorded 640-by-480-pixel videos played at a decent, if slightly choppy 20 frames per second. Standalone videos play smoothly but look tiny on the phone?s display.

If you're comfortable with BlackBerrys, the Style won't disappoint. I rather like its flip form factor. But BlackBerry OS is really showing its age, particularly when it comes to apps. That said, Sprint's prepaid Boost division doesn't offer much selection in the way of handsets. Our current favorite is the Samsung Galaxy Prevail ($179.99, 4 stars), which offers a solid, mostly stock Android experience, plus a higher-resolution screen, a much better WebKit browser, and access to over 200,000 third-party apps in the Android Market. It lacks a hardware QWERTY keyboard, though, and it's a regular touch-screen slab instead of a flip phone. If you want more choices, you're best heading over to the Sprint mainland, where you can find brand new, high-end phones like the Motorola Photon 4G ($199.99, 4.5 stars) and the BlackBerry Bold 9930; just be prepared to pay higher monthly fees.?

Benchmarks
Continuous talk time: 4 hours 24 minutes

Leukemia Survivor Credits Her Life to Tiny Blood Donors (HealthDay)

FRIDAY, Oct. 7 (HealthDay News) -- Jennifer Jones Austin works as a lawyer and child advocate in Brooklyn, N.Y., devoting her talents to protecting at-risk children. So it may be fitting that in Austin's own hour of need, her life was saved by donations from two newborn children.

Austin survived leukemia in 2010 because she received transfusions of stem cells donated from umbilical cord blood that had been drawn shortly after the children's birth.

"I would not be here today, sharing my story, if it weren't for those children," Austin, 42, said.

She had fallen suddenly ill with a mysterious ailment in September 2009. It started out like the flu, with fatigue and fever, but after a few days, she said, things got significantly worse. "I woke up and I couldn't see," she recalled. "I was blind."

Austin was admitted to the hospital and underwent a battery of tests. The diagnosis came back quickly: She had a quick-onset form of leukemia, and her chances of survival were slim.

"As they talked about how they would treat me with chemo, I started having very shallow breaths," Austin said. "I couldn't breathe on my own."

Another set of tests revealed that the leukemia had entered her lungs and was interfering with her ability to breathe, she said.

"They thought I was going to die," Austin said. "They put me into ICU on a Friday and told my family I probably wasn't going to make it through the weekend."

Doctors placed Austin in an induced coma, put her on a respirator and attacked the cancer with aggressive chemotherapy. She remained in the coma for 10 days.

Another piece of bad news awaited Austin upon her revival: She needed a bone marrow transplant as soon as possible. "They were virtually certain the cancer would return if I didn't have a bone marrow transplant," she said.

But Austin is African American, which makes it difficult to find an exact match for a bone marrow transplant. Her brother and two sisters were her best bet for a match, and they underwent testing. "They all matched each other, but not me," she recalled.

She turned next to the National Marrow Donor Program, which maintains a registry of people willing to donate marrow. But the registry contained no matches.

Her family sprang into action, urging African Americans across the country to register as marrow donors in hopes of finding Austin a match. They reached out through the media, on social networking sites such as Facebook and through the national network of African American churches.

"We added over 13,000 people to the registry within less than 13 weeks," Austin said -- the largest number of donors ever added to the registry by a single family, and the largest number of African American donors the registry ever tallied in a single year.

And yet it did Austin no good. "Through all of those efforts, we didn't find a match for me," she said.

But officials at the National Marrow Donor Program had come up with an alternative. They had identified two cord blood donations as likely matches for Austin. Cord blood is fast becoming an alternative to marrow donation for people of ethnic descent because those cells do not require as precise a match.

"I had heard of the stem cell issue, as a controversial issue," Austin said. "I was not aware of the fact that cord blood was being used as bone marrow transplant."

The transplant itself, which took place in February 2010, was easy enough, Austin said. They hooked her to an IV, and the stem cells flowed into her body. But preparing for the transplant was another story -- something Austin described as "a very grueling process."

"For your body to receive and accept the process, they have to break your body down," she said. Doctors used aggressive chemotherapy and radiation to kill any remaining cancer cells and knock out her immune system and then gave her the transplant, she said.

"Then I spent 40 days in the hospital following transplant, in solitary confinement," Austin said. "I could not leave the room."

She said her recovery was slow. "It took me until about June to be able to walk a block and a half without falling apart, and I was someone who was the epitome of good health," she said. "I ate very well, I exercised regularly, I was not an ounce obese."

But today, she feels pretty good. "The moments where I realize I still have a ways to go are when I try to run up a flight of stairs and I'm tired when I get to the top," she said. "Or when I stand in one place for 15 minutes, looking at a piece of art in a museum, my body starts growing tired. If that's the extent of the lingering effects, I think I'm good to go."

And though the nationwide effort to save Austin's life may not have benefited her directly, she said she's heard of others who have been helped.

"I've been told about six different people who said they came to the registry as a result of my situation and have been called upon to serve as a donor for another person," she said.

Given her profession and her calling, Austin sees the donations that did save her life as something approaching divine intervention.

"The irony of it all is, at the end, when I needed someone to help me, the Lord put out the cord blood of two little ones for me," she said.

Schwarzenegger inaugurates his museum in Austria (AP)

THAL, Austria ? Arnold Schwarzenegger ? the bodybuilder, movie star and ex-governor who's in the middle of a messy divorce ? invoked his life as a model for young people Friday during the formal inauguration of a museum dedicated to him in his native Austria.

Hundreds of fans braved driving rain and chilly autumn temperatures to fete Austria's most famous living son at the museum, located in the two-story Thal village house where Schwarzenegger was born.

The museum, open since July, is a repository of items that include his first barbell, the metal bed that he slept on as a youth, several life-size "Terminator" models and the polished dark wooden desk he sat behind while California's governor.

Schwarzenegger also unveiled a bronze statue of himself flexing and in trunks as the young body builder from Austria whose rippling biceps led to his Hollywood career ? and the popularity that paved the road to the governor's office.

Shielded by an umbrella, Schwarzenegger used the occasion to deliver an inspirational speech to youthful fans. Invoking the title of one of his early films, he told them anything was possible as long as they "stay hungry."

He said he wishes that every person who visits the museum "understands that everyone can be successful in his own way."

"My personal success has less to do with millions of dollars or with the headlines in the media that are not always positive and also not with being clapped on the shoulder by Barack Obama and other world names," he said. "Personal success is the result of determination, hard work and stubbornness.

"For me, this is not only a museum," he added, gesturing to the yellow-stuccoed house behind him. "It is also a symbol of will ... everyone has a chance."

The bronze statue is one of several commissioned by Schwarzenegger earlier this year. But even if some in the crowd knew that the Schwarzenegger likeness was not unique, they didn't seem to care. Bodyguards had to pry a path through people holding an umbrella in one hand and trying to touch their idol with the other, whistling and cheering as he passed by.

With Schwarzenegger was Patrick, his son from his marriage with Maria Shriver. The two are divorcing. But the museum displays photos of Schwarzenegger and Shriver in happier times, and Schwarzenegger described "the marriage with Maria" as one of the days "that I remember with great fondness."

The marriage unraveled after Schwarzenegger acknowledged being the father of child outside of his marriage ? something that at least some fans gathered Friday suggested tarnished his reputation.

"We Austrians are proud of him and what he accomplished," said Gottfried Karner, from the Upper Austrian city of Steyr. "But there are certain things he did that one does not agree with."

Most Austrians have stayed focused on Schwarzenegger's successes since he left for the United States in 1968, first as Mr. Universe, then as "Conan the Barbarian" and the "Terminator" ? and finally his 2003 election as governor.

Even before his private life came up for criticism, however, Schwarzenegger's cult status in Austria took some knocks because of his support of the Iraq war and the death penalty as California's governor.

Criticism grew after he refused to pardon two convicted murderers in a row in 2005 to the point where he ordered city fathers in Graz ? Austria's second largest city where he spent his youth ? to strip his name from the Graz soccer stadium and sent back the city's highest award ? its ring of honor.

Since then, the mood has swung back to adulation ? and Friday's speeches reflected that. Austrian Chancellor Werner Faymann, who opened the ceremonies, described Schwarzenegger as "one Austrian known by everyone in the world, adding: "We as Austrians are proud of you."

On The Lookout For Excellent Entry Doors | Mesa Glass Repair

One?s search for entry doors for a house will find them with very many choices. Shopping in the home-improvement chains, online, or in a door store, the options are numerous. Coming to a final decision can be challenging.

The job of discovering the appropriate door for one?s home sounds simple, but can be hard. So, to help the shopper, this is an outline on how to choose the best entrance for you. Thus, making things a little easier. First take note that the words entry and exterior doors are exchangeable. It is up to the wholesaler, manufacturer, or retailer that determines how they are used. Just know that they reference the same item.

While shopping around, it is important to know how a door should swing open. Knowing if a door should swing open in or open out is something to consider. Thus, a person must make the decision to purchase an inswing or an outswing door.

The next thing to consider is which side the door opens. This depends on whether one is right-handed or left-handed. If right-handed, you must know that the hinges are on the left for an Inswing and on the right for an Outswing. If left-handed, it is the opposite. For an Inswing the hinges are on the left and for the Outswing, the hinges are on the right.

In general, stores immediately offer the Traditional Entry Door. This consists of three types that offer different features that benefit one?s home. They are Steel, Fiberglass, and Wood. Additionally, door accents add something extra in the presentation of one?s home. Surrounding your door, there is an offering of all different types of Glass, Sidelites which come on one or both sides of a door, an over-the-head decor are called Transoms, and an added value would be the In-glass blinds.

The Steel door comes with a durability that is long-lasting and very low maintenance. The foam core insulation bring energy efficiency. They are completely weatherstripped and built to resist any warping, swelling, or shrinking. Pre-primed and ready to go, the Steel offering comes ready for paint.

One may have an appeal for the Fiberglass exterior where they will see the common energy efficiency and pre-primed features as that of the Steel product. But, Fiberglass exteriors come with wood grain textures that make them look like a wood door. They too are made to endure all types of weather with a higher resistance to dents and scratches.

Finally, the Wood door gives a warm, more traditional look to a home. Its hand-craftsmanship and earthiness gives a home an inviting feel to the outsider. For the owner, its heaviness and durability gives on a good sense of security, even without the alarm system. Plus, the framing and paneling contribute to its ability to withstand all types of climate.

The offering for entry doors seem quite endless. It is due to so many options that this outline is complete with consumer guidelines to find what would best fit their home. While decision-making may initially seem like task, it turns out to be very fun.

Quality Entry Doors offers innovative design and state of the art technology on all products. Front Doors manufacturer provides reliable delivery and Stellar Lifetime Warranty.
