Prosecutor: 'Underwear bomber' wanted to be martyr

A young Nigerian allegedly on a terrorist mission for al-Qaida prayed, washed and put on perfume moments before trying to detonate a bomb in his underwear to bring down an international jetliner on Christmas 2009, a prosecutor told jurors as the man's trial opened Tuesday.

Virtually everyone aboard Northwest Airlines Flight 253 had holiday plans, but Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab believed his calling was martyrdom, Assistant U.S. Attorney Jonathan Tukel said.

In the plane's bathroom, "he was engaging in rituals. He was preparing to die and enter heaven," Tukel said. "He purified himself. He washed. He brushed his teeth. He put on perfume. He was praying and perfuming himself to get ready to die."

After returning to his seat, Abdulmutallab pushed a syringe plunger into the chemical bomb in his underwear, an action that produced a "pop," the prosecutor told jurors.

The bomb didn't work as planned but Abdulmutallab was engulfed in flames, said Tukel, who displayed the flight's seating chart on a screen to show jurors where things happened on the plane.

The day's first and only witness, passenger Mike Zantow of Madison, Wisc., said Abdulmutallab went to the bathroom for 10 to 15 minutes, then returned and put a blanket over himself. He heard the "pop" and said another passenger remarked, "Hey, dude, your pants are on fire."

Prosecutors delivered their opening statements after an unexplained 70-minute recess requested by Abdulmutallab and his attorney, Anthony Chambers, shortly after they entered the courtroom.

Story: US a cancer, alleged underwear bomber says in court

Chambers later informed the judge that he would waive his opening statement until later in the trial, a decision that came as somewhat of a surprise.

Chambers had just last week persuaded Abdulmutallab, 24, not to give his own statement even though Abdulmutallab technically is acting as his own lawyer.

Earlier, Chambers had asked the judge to ban the word "bomb" or "explosive" from being used in the trial until final arguments, saying it's up to the jury to decide what caused the smoke and fire.

"I'm going to deny that motion. ... It makes no sense whatsoever," U.S. District Judge Nancy Edmunds said.

Edmunds also told Detroit-area attorney Kurt Haskell to leave the courtroom before opening statements began because he could be called as a defense witness. He was a passenger on Flight 253 and believes the U.S. government conspired with Abdulmutallab to outfit him with a fake bomb.

Abdulmutallab is relying on Chambers to handle the minute-by-minute work in the courtroom, meaning jurors are likely to see a more focused defense and not a wild justification for trying to bring down the Amsterdam-to-Detroit flight.

Abdulmutallab has written a few court filings in his own hand, including a request to be judged by Islamic law. He has at times appeared agitated in court, declaring that Osama bin Laden and a radical Muslim cleric recently killed by the U.S. are alive. He also has objected to trial testimony from experts who will talk about al-Qaida and martyrdom.

The government's evidence is stacked high. Abdulmutallab was badly burned in a plane full of witnesses. The government says he told FBI agents he was working for al Qaida and directed by Anwar al-Awlaki, a radical, American-born Muslim cleric recently killed by the U.S. in Yemen. There are also photos of his scorched shorts as well as video of Abdulmutallab explaining his suicide mission before departing for the U.S.

PFT: Pryor's 5-game suspension ends

Justin Tuck, Jarriel KingAP

The Jets aren?t the only New York-area team hearing criticism from a Super Bowl-winning former member of the team.

Antonio Pierce had some harsh criticism of former teammates Justin Tuck and Brandon Jacobs for missing Sunday?s 36-25 loss to the Seahawks with injuries during an appearance with Mike Greenberg and Mike Golic on ESPN Radio on Monday.

?To me, if you don?t have an injury that needs surgery or is that severe, you need to be out there,? Pierce said. ?And I don?t really know and I don?t want to question guys, but if you?re one of the leaders on the team ? which Brandon Jacobs and Justin Tuck are ? and you say, ?You know what? The Seattle Seahawks, maybe we don?t need to play this game? and you miss out, that?s what?s going to bite you in the tail.?

Tuck has missed three of the five Giants games this year with neck and groin injuries and he indicated last week that he might sit out through the bye week to ensure he heals up enough to play the rest of the way. He also came out of the win over the Eagles because of an injury, which led to a similar slam from Michael Strahan during the game via Twitter. Jacobs has a sprained MCL.

Interestingly, Pierce chose to retire rather than have surgery to repair a bulging disk in his neck. He missed seven games during the 2009 season because of the injury, which, at the time, he insisted did not require surgery for him to get back on the field.

Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News got a response from Tuck.

?Tell Antonio he knows my cell phone number if he has anything to say to me about how I play the game.?

Trying to diagnose the level of an injury suffered by another person is a pretty silly game for those who never went to medical school to play. It?s easy to say that a player should just tough it out, but much harder to actually know the situation from a distance. We?ll never know what Pierce would have said if the Giants had won on Sunday, but it is a pretty good guess that he wouldn?t have been so sure that Tuck and Jacobs were doing something wrong by being on the sideline with injuries.

Official: Kuwait recognizes Kosovo's independence (AP)

PRISTINA, Kosovo ? Kosovo's foreign minister says Kuwait has recognized Kosovo's 2008 declaration of independence from Serbia.

Enver Hoxhaj told The Associated Press by telephone from Kuwait on Tuesday that the decision was timed to match his visit. He said it also follows a visit by senior Kuwaiti officials to Kosovo earlier this week.

Hoxhaj is on a tour of the region that included a stop in the United Arab Emirates; he is also to visit Iraq.

Kosovo is majority Muslim, but so far Arab countries have hesitated from recognizing Kosovo's independence because of Serbia's lobbying.

More than 80 countries have recognized Kosovo as a state, but Serbia has vowed to stop it from gaining international recognition.

Dental Insurance and Personal Health Care Plans

It's rare to find a dental insurance in the personal health care plans. According to statistics, there are about 450,000 Americans, who do not own any dental insurance in their personal health care plans at present. Furthermore, the personal health care insurances of most people do not include a dental insurance. Although personal health care plans include some value-added services such as the fundamental emergency nurses and the cost of prescription medicine, the mouth care of adults is exclusive in the personal health care coverage. However, for the personal health care insurance of children, the dental insurance is necessary.
The sponsored plan by an independent government can provide a dental health care although limited, because it is the personal health care plan for children. For the adults, they can consider buying an independent dental care plan. So are you looking for a personal health care plan or providing a dental care plan? The statistics from the American health insurance plans shows that only few insurance providers can do this, including CIGNA, ANTAIOS AND ASSURANT.

According to new study in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine

San Diego, CA, October 11, 2011 Previous studies have documented that women with disabilities are more likely to be sexually assaulted than women without disabilities. A new study published online today in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine is the first population-based investigation to examine sexual violence victimization against men with disabilities. Researchers report that men with disabilities are more than four times more likely to be victimized by sexual assaults compared to men without disabilities.

"Men with disabilities are at a heightened risk for lifetime and current sexual violence victimization," according to lead investigator Monika Mitra, PhD, Research Scientist, Center for Health Policy and Research, and Assistant Professor, Department of Family Medicine and Community Health, University of Massachusetts Medical School. "The most notable finding is that the prevalence of lifetime sexual violence, completed rape, and attempted rape against men with disabilities was comparable to that against women without disabilities, and past-year rates for men with disabilities exceeded those for women without disabilities."

Dr. Mitra adds that "this study also broadened research of such victimization against men with disabilities beyond the intimate partner context to acquaintances and strangers, as well as family members, intimate partners, and dates. This is particularly relevant for people with disabilities whom earlier studies have suggested are especially likely to experience abuse from caregivers and personal care and other attendants, in addition to intimate partners."

Investigators from the University of Massachusetts Medical School and the Massachusetts Department of Public Health used data from close to 22,000 respondents collected as part of the 2005? Massachusetts Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (MA-BRFSS), which is an annual health survey of noninstitutionalized adults conducted in collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Approximately 13.9% of men with disabilities reported lifetime sexual violence, compared to 3.7% of men without disabilities, 26.6% of women with disabilities, and 12.4% of women without disabilities. Men with disabilities (5.3%) were more likely to report past-year sexual violence than men (1.5%) and women (2.4%) without disabilities and less likely than women with disabilities (6.3%).

Participants were asked (1) whether anyone ever had or attempted to have sex with them without their consent; and (2) whether in the past year anyone had touched them sexually without their consent/despite their objections or had exposed them to nonconsensual sexual situations that did not involve physical touching.

To determine disability status, respondents were asked whether they had limitations because of physical, mental, or emotional problems, any health problem that required use of special equipment, trouble learning, remembering or concentrating because of a health problem or impairment, or a physical, mental, emotional, or communication-related disability. Those responding yes to any of these questions and whose disability had limited their activities for at least one year were classified as having a disability.
