Sony Ericsson shifts to smartphones amid Sony buyout talk (Reuters)

STOCKHOLM (Reuters) ? Mobile phone maker Sony Ericsson will focus entirely on the booming smartphone market, going head to head with rivals like Apple and underlining the importance of a tie-up with Sony amid reports the electronics giant is preparing a buyout.

The company said on Friday it would shift all its production to smartphones during 2012 as it reported a swing back to profit of 31 million euros, just higher than forecasts. It said it expected more margin pressure, partly due to a global slowdown.

"If the consumer confidence problem continues it will hurt the mobile industry," CEO Bert Nordberg said in an interview.

Last week, a source with direct knowledge of the matter told Reuters Sony was in talks to buy Ericsson's 50 percent stake in the joint venture. In the Reuters interview, Nordberg declined to comment.

Analysts believe the world's ninth largest handset maker can only succeed in attracting avid gadget users away from its rivals by being fully integrated into Sony's wide portfolio of devices and getting access to the Japanese electronic giant's entertainment assets, like PlayStation and music catalogues.

Smartphones currently account for around 80 percent of all Sony Ericsson's sales and the company said its share of the global Android-based smartphone market during the quarter was approximately 12 percent in volume and 11 percent in value.

"Speculation persists that Sony will buy out the JV," said Geoff Blaber from CCS Insight.

"This is arguably the most desirable endgame for a company that needs full access to Sony content and services."

Controlling Sony Ericsson would help Sony recoup ground in the battle against Apple Inc and Samsung Electronics, where it has been hampered by a disjointed strategy regarding mobile gadgets and online content.

For Ericsson, a sale would insulate its profit and loss account from the volatility Sony Ericsson has brought and allow it to focus resources on loss-making chip venture ST-Ericsson.

A Reuters poll put the price of Ericsson's 50 percent stake in Sony Ericsson at around $1.5 billion.

TOUGH ROAD AHEAD

The road ahead will be tough for Sony Ericsson as it shifts fully to smartphones. The segment is expected to see 50 percent against 14 percent growth in the market overall and all handset makers are desperate for a bigger slice of the pie.

Sony Ericsson will also have to go head-to-head with Apple, whose new iPhone caused queues at stores across the globe on Friday after going on sale.

In sharp contrast to Apple's roaring success, Sony Ericsson has been losing money for a while, although its recent focus on smartphones based on Google's Android platform has pulled the company back into the black.

Third quarter pretax profit at the company was 31 million euros ($42 million), just higher than the mean forecast of 27 million euros in a Reuters poll and a swing back from a loss of 42 million in the previous quarter.

The venture sold 9.5 million phones in the quarter, ahead of analysts' average forecast of 8.8 million, helping revenues to rise 33 percent from previous quarter to 1.59 billion euros, when average forecast stood at 1.38 billion.

Apple is expected to have sold about 20 million phones in the quarter, according to a Reuters poll.

Sony Ericsson's sales jumped in Asia, and the firm said its new models were particularly well received in Japan.

"On the sales side it's actually a pretty strong quarter ... On the earnings side it's not that strong, and the company will have to work on that side going forward to lift the operating margin," said Sydbank analyst Morten Imsgaard.

The company repeated its goal for an operating margin of 10 percent against 2 percent in the third quarter, indicating that after years of restructuring, more remains to be done.

Furthermore, Sony Ericsson said it expected continued pressure on margins due to the rapid decline in profits on feature phones and the tough competitive environment, while the global slowdown is likely to add to difficulties.

Despite the gloomier outlook, analysts have changed their fourth-quarter cellphone sales forecasts only slightly, with a Reuters poll finding expectations of a historically normal 12 percent quarter-on-quarter rise.

When asked how the crisis might affect the holiday sales-fueled fourth quarter, Nordberg said: "I am not confident at all. Its very hard to predict."

Romney leads Republicans, Cain second: Reuters/Ipsos (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? Mitt Romney leads the field vying for the Republican presidential nomination, but fewer than one in four of the party's voters back him as a surging Herman Cain gains ground, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll released on Wednesday.

Romney, a former Massachusetts governor, is holding on to his support but failing to increase it significantly, according to the survey, which also showed Democratic President Barack Obama facing deep unhappiness among voters about his performance.

Romney was backed by 23 percent of Republicans in the October poll, up from 20 percent in the most recent comparable Reuters/Ipsos poll carried out in June.

Cain, a businessman who has emerged as a surprise top contender after proposing a radical tax reform, nearly tripled his support among Republicans in the same period, leaping to 19 percent from 7 percent four months ago.

"In the Republican presidential primary, everybody still says Mitt Romney's the front-runner," Ipsos research director Chris Jackson said. "And he is ... but he's certainly not any sort of dominant front-runner."

In the latest poll, Texas Representative Ron Paul was third with 13 percent and Texas Governor Rick Perry, a former front-runner, was fourth with 10 percent.

Supporters of former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, who announced last week she would not run for president, have not coalesced behind a single candidate, the survey found.

The poll was conducted from Thursday to Monday, before a debate on economic issues on Tuesday night in which Romney and Cain had strong performances and Perry failed to make up the ground he lost when he stumbled through two previous debates.

"I think Rick Perry's boomlet probably really peaked in August and has subsided," Jackson said.

But things could change dramatically before a nominee is chosen to oppose Obama in November 2012. Four years ago this month, former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani was the leader among Republican presidential hopefuls, well ahead of his nearest rival, Fred Thompson, who like Giuliani left the race early.

Arizona Senator John McCain, the eventual nominee, was in third place in October 2007.

The margin of error for Republicans among the 1,113 people polled was 4.8 percentage points, leaving Romney and Cain in a virtual tie.

An NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll released on Wednesday found Cain leading the Republican field at 27 percent, up from just 5 percent in a survey in late August. Perry fell to third place with 16 percent, dropping more than 20 points since the August NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll.

OBAMA TAKES HEAT FROM VOTERS

Whichever Republican eventually wins the nomination to run against Obama in 2012 will face an incumbent facing a very unhappy public.

The percentage of Americans who disapprove of the president's job performance has edged up to 50 percent from 48 percent in the past month and the percentage who strongly disapprove has risen to 34 percent, the highest level since Obama entered the White House.

Fewer than half -- 47 percent -- of Americans approve of the way Obama is handling his job as president, a figure unchanged from a poll conducted in September.

Obama has taken a tougher line against political opponents as he has pushed for passage of his jobs bill but the new approach has yet to make a difference among voters.

"People are still wildly pessimistic," Jackson said.

The survey showed that 74 percent of Americans believed the country was on the wrong track, compared with 21 percent who believed it was going in the right direction.

There was one bright spot for Democrats. More registered voters -- 48 percent -- said they would back Democrats in congressional races if the November 2012 elections were held today, compared with 40 percent who would support Republicans.

But their verdict on how the two parties would handle the struggling economy -- the issue expected to be central to the 2012 election -- generally favored Republicans.

On reducing the deficit, Republicans have the lead at 44 percent to 35 percent for Democrats; they have a 43 percent to 36 percent lead on their ability to make the country globally competitive; and more Americans thought they would generate economic growth, with a 43 percent to 38 percent edge over the Democrats.

The two parties were tied on job creation at 41 percent each and close on "dealing with taxes," with 42 percent for Democrats and 41 percent picking Republicans. On the economy overall, 42 percent favored Republicans and 40 percent chose Democrats.

The Reuters/Ipsos poll of 1,113 adults, including 934 registered voters, had a margin of error of 3 percentage points for all respondents and 3.2 points for registered voters.

Chandler: Will Tebow Time be Hollywood story?

I won?t lie, it?s impossible for me to imagine Tim Tebow uttering John McClane?s signature line: ?Yippee ki yay, mother******.? Perhaps they can rewrite it? ?You underestimated me, fellows.? Or, ?Despite your attempts to rig this skyscraper with explosives, Jesus still loves you.?

Nope, nope not working. So I?ll just take it on faith that Fox Filmed Entertainment CEO John Rothman knows what he?s doing. On Jim Rome?s radio show on Wednesday, Rothman brought up Tebow?s name while discussing the studio?s planned Die Hard sequel ? in which Bruce Willis will again play John McClane, this time handing down his terror-bashing skills to his son. And that son may be Tebow. Yep.

?What do you think of Tebow in the lead??? Rothman asked Rome.

And Rome replied, ?He might be too nice. But no one would work harder to make it work.?

I know what you?re thinking: ?Who ate the last donut?? But you?re also thinking, ?Tebow had better try acting, because he damn well can?t play football.? The Broncos, and God, apparently disagree, because they?ve set the table for him to be the starting quarterback in a way that?s leaving nothing to chance. At 1-4 in the AFC West, Denver is giving Tebow an 11-game tryout, beginning with the team that comes with its own laugh track, the 0-4 Miami Dolphins. The Lions and Raiders in weeks 8 and 9 may be more problematic, but for a first bout, you can?t do better than drawing Glass Joe.

source: Denver will use its bye this week getting Tebow ready for prime time, which means stripping down the playbook like a ?68 Chevy Impala. Tebow will have fewer programmed combinations than Noisy Boy, but hopefully for Denver fans the result will be different.

And if they do win, man, get ready for chaos. The resulting Tebow explosion will be awesome to behold (picture Helen Hunt driving through a tornado, yelling ?Cow!?). I can?t think of another pro athlete who has been as polarizing as Tebow despite the fact that he?s had practically no chance to prove himself. You either love him or you hate him ? few are perched on the fence. And if he starts winning in Denver, the haters are going to be eaten whole.

But who in their right mind would spend time on a weekday morning assembling a paper Tim Tebow for one?s desk? What a colossal waste of time. Um ? what I mean to say is ? here?s mine:

source:

As you can see I had a little trouble with the arms (they?re supposed to be pointing down, at his hips), and I forgot his helmet. Kind of fitting, actually: Tebow?s critics have been pointing out the trouble with his mechanics for years. They say he?s rash, unpredictable, prone to throwing balls that resemble deformed fowl.

But I can think of plenty of quarterbacks who won without looking pretty. And here?s the main thing: Football, we tend to forget, is a team game. Today?s Aaron Rodgers is tomorrow?s Duante Culpepper. Remember when everyone, and by everyone I mean you, were writing obituaries for Alex Smith? He didn?t all of a sudden make a deal with Mr. Applegate after six years in the league. So much depends on the system and the coach and the offensive line, and we always forget that. Because it?s easier to say ?Player A sucks,? rather than break down the reasons why. Frankly, you sicken me. Begone with you.

Just kidding. Let?s stay right here and get ready for Tebow Nation, v. 2.0. If his rollout the Sunday after next is a success, there will be a paper Tebow on every desktop, and we?ll pray to it in the mornings and lay it gently on our pillows each night, covering it with tiny knitted comforters. But look out for the cat ? oh no! Tiny paper desktop Tebow! ?

Yep, it?s almost Tebow time. Yippee ki yay, um, fellows.

Norwegian prawns to spice up Chinese noodles

ScienceDaily (Oct. 11, 2011) ? Bioprospecting is opening up international markets for Norwegian seafood companies. Essences extracted from a prawn or octopus off the west coast of Norway could end up as flavouring in noodle packages in China.

This type of bioprospecting involves investigating marine organisms to find components or compounds that have commercial use. The potential results are particularly promising in relation to foodstuffs as well as for applications in medicine and the energy industry.

In the initial phase, researchers will be investigating various species and raw materials, including species already common in fisheries, untapped resources such as woodlice, and by-products such as leftovers from processing in the fishing industry, to cater for Chinese preferences.

Essences extracted from a prawn or octopus off the west coast of Norway could end up as flavouring in noodle packages in China.

"In China they sell a total of 100 billion noodle packages each year. Two-hundred million of these contain a packet of seafood flavouring. This enormous market is our target," says Ola Ween of the Norwegian research company, M?reforskning AS.

Ween is heading a research project in cooperation with another company, Firmenich Bj?rge Biomarin AS. Their goal is to identify molecules to use as a source of seafood flavourings they hope will catch on specifically in China. The process is a complicated one and begins with studying the Chinese palate.

Marine bioprospecting with commercial promise

If the researchers succeed, they can add yet another success to the growing list of products resulting from marine bioprospecting. This type of bioprospecting involves investigating marine organisms to find components or compounds that have commercial use. The potential results are particularly promising in relation to foodstuffs as well as for applications in medicine and the energy industry.

The Chinese have different taste preferences from Europeans. M?reforskning AS's project receives funding under the National Programme for Research in Functional Genomics (FUGE), one of the Large-scale Programmes administered by the Research Council of Norway.

What do the Chinese prefer?

"We know that the Chinese have different taste preferences from Europeans. Our first step is to identify the appealing flavours which the Chinese associate with the sea. Subsequently, we will find raw materials off the Norwegian coast we can use to create similar flavours," Ween explains.

In the initial phase, researchers will be investigating various species and raw materials, including species already common in fisheries, untapped resources such as woodlice, and by-products such as leftovers from processing in the fishing industry. They hope to end up with 3-4 promising sources to research further after this phase has been completed.

Just the right mix

Once the prospective ingredients for new flavours have been isolated, they will be analysed down to the tiniest molecule. This will enable the researchers to determine whether it will be at all feasible to extract what they have targeted. If so, these substances will then either be produced from raw materials or through artificial means.

The taste of a food is determined by its particular combination of amino acids, fats and other chemical components. The challenge is to find the perfect blend for Chinese noodles -- perhaps a tasty mix of substances from Norwegian prawns, cod and woodlice?

4 Filipino kids drown, 1 missing in swollen river (AP)

MANILA, Philippines ? Officials say four schoolchildren have drowned and another is missing after they were swept by a rampaging river in the central Philippines amid pounding rains set off by a brewing storm.

Benito Ramos, who heads the Office of Civil Defense, says the five children were crossing the river on their way home from school Monday in Barotac Viejo town in Iloilo province when they were swept away by the currents.

Ramos said Tuesday that the bodies of four of the children, including three siblings, had been found and that rescuers were searching for the fifth child.

A tropical depression was expected to strengthen into a storm and hit the southeastern province of Surigao del Sur later Tuesday or Wednesday. The brewing storm has fouled up weather in central provinces.

Biography, Movie, Product Upgrades Are Steve Jobs' 'One More Thing' (NewsFactor)

Even in death, Steve Jobs is able to offer "one more thing" -- the hand-off phrase that he made popular, almost always leading to some new thing that was way beyond being just one more. The "one more things" for the post-Steve Jobs world reportedly include a biographical movie and a roadmap for new Apple products.

According to rumors, Sony Pictures is negotiating for a seven-figure purchase of the movie rights to the coming authorized biography, "Steve Jobs." The new book, whose release was moved up from November to this month following the Apple co-founder's passing, was written by Walter Isaacson, former chairman of CNN and ex-managing editor for Time magazine. Isaacson's previous biographies include ones on Benjamin Franklin and Albert Einstein.

'Roller-Coaster Life'

Immediately following Jobs' death, the as-yet-unpublished book shot from 437th to first on Amazon's bestseller list, based on pre-orders.

According to the publisher, Simon & Schuster, the book presents "a riveting story of the roller-coaster life and searingly intense personality of a creative entrepreneur whose passion for perfection and ferocious drive revolutionized six industries: personal computers, animated movies, music, phones, tablet computing, and digital publishing."

The book is based on more than 40 interviews with Jobs and over 100 conversations with family members, friends, and colleagues. It's the first book on the legendary CEO that had his cooperation. The movie reportedly would be produced by Mark Gordon, whose other films include "Saving Private Ryan," "The Day After Tomorrow," "Source Code" and "2012."

Simon & Schuster said Jobs had neither control over what Isaacson wrote, nor even the right to read it prior to publication.

According to the Daily Mail in the U.K., Jobs also prepared a variety of plans for products for Apple to pursue after he was gone. These included new versions of the key Apple products -- the Mac, iPhone, iPad and iPod. The newspaper, quoting unnamed sources, said the plans lay out at least four years' worth of upgrades and new models for those lines.

The Next Steve Jobs

Even as his health deteriorated, Jobs also was heavily involved in plans for the new Apple headquarters in Cupertino. The new 3.1-million-square-foot circular design, which has been described as resembling a spaceship, was presented to the City Council in June, and Jobs attended the hearing in support of the project.

Meanwhile, in an "insanely great" move that the original Steve Jobs might have appreciated, satirical publication The Onion has reported that Apple CEO Tim Cook will soon announce the launch next year of Steve Jobs 2, "an updated version of the revolutionary Apple founder featuring a richer, deeper voice and a sleek new white turtleneck."

According to the Onion's unnamed sources, the new model will come with such new features as curly hair, an "upgraded design sense, and nicer pants." In other news, The Onion said Microsoft, not to be outdone, would soon offer a Bill Gates XE model.

HBO Go comes to TV, through Roku players (AP)

NEW YORK ? HBO's Internet streaming service, which gives subscribers access to its shows on PCs, smartphones and tablets, is going back to where it all started: the TV.

HBO Go will be available on Roku Inc.'s Internet set-top boxes at the end of this month, HBO and Roku said Tuesday.

The boxes, which start at $50, connect to a broadband line and display movies and TV shows from sources such as Netflix and Hulu on a TV set.

As before, HBO Go is only available for free to those who have a conventional cable subscription to HBO, a unit of Time Warner Inc.

Not all cable subscribers are eligible. For instance, subscribers with Time Warner Cable Inc., which is separate from Time Warner Inc., don't have access because of a dispute between the cable company and HBO.

While the Roku boxes will only work for cable subscribers, they will provide a way to watch in a room where there's no conventional cable set-top box. They'll also work outside the home.

HBO Go will provide resolutions up to 720p, the lower grade of high definition, spokeswoman Laura Young said. HBO's goal is to get the resolution up to 1080p, the best that today's TV sets can display.
