4 Filipino kids drown, 1 missing in swollen river (AP)

MANILA, Philippines ? Officials say four schoolchildren have drowned and another is missing after they were swept by a rampaging river in the central Philippines amid pounding rains set off by a brewing storm.

Benito Ramos, who heads the Office of Civil Defense, says the five children were crossing the river on their way home from school Monday in Barotac Viejo town in Iloilo province when they were swept away by the currents.

Ramos said Tuesday that the bodies of four of the children, including three siblings, had been found and that rescuers were searching for the fifth child.

A tropical depression was expected to strengthen into a storm and hit the southeastern province of Surigao del Sur later Tuesday or Wednesday. The brewing storm has fouled up weather in central provinces.
